Kawhi Leonard was the MVP of the 2014 Finals, but in the days leading up to receiving that honor, he couldn’t possibly have cared less.

Now that the championship has been won and it was his turn to take the Larry O’Brien trophy on tour for a few days, Leonard was too focused on working out to be able to enjoy the accomplishment and take it around town.

So he let it sit in his living room for two days.

From Mark Ziegler of UTSanDiego.com:

San Diego State alum and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard got “Larry” for three days in Southern California. He had it Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and he arranged for people to take pictures with it at his annual skills camp for youths last weekend in his hometown of Moreno Valley.

And Thursday and Friday?

It sat in the living room of the San Diego condominium he rents during the offseason while the Spurs staffer who chaperones the trophy around the world lounged at a UTC hotel pool … while Leonard was at his three-a-day workouts.

“I didn’t have any time to do anything with it,” Leonard explained. “My workout schedule is crazy.”

The trophy has toured the world this summer, and many players were happy to take it around their home towns and let the locals share in the excitement of the championship experience.

Leonard, however, chose preparation over celebration, and continues to be the personification of the Spurs and their insanely high level of professionalism — even if it times that doesn’t seem like a whole lot of fun.

I heard he was way too busy trying to find a pair of gloves that will fit his freakishly large hands.

I’m curious to know if he was this way before, or after reaching the Spurs.

I think there’s a story about him before the draft. The Spurs scheduled a workout on a morning, and Kawhi was already there at 6 a.m, practicing his jump-shot. That’s maybe the reason why the Spurs drafted him, as he was already a gym rat back in college.

The person who fits what you asked about is Danny Green, waived by Pop after just one week, then left a voicemail begging for another chance. And we got what he is right now.

He was, I mean I don’t know him personally but following college basketball blogs and beat writers……..they’ve always sort of said the same thing….very focused and quiet and prepares like its a job. It probably is why the Spurs traded for him on draft night, because they knew he fit the mold of what they do and how they conduct themselves.

If he is that committed to his workouts, that’s amazing. Good for him.

The opposite end of the spectrum, in the “not so good for them” category was Jay Cutler’s now wife. He had her engagement ring shipped to her. (After having it resized, I assume? Don’t think it was the first time she’d seen it, at least I’m hoping not.) And she let it be known via social media that it had been sitting on the table unopened for over a week because she’d been too busy to get to it.

Good question. By all accounts, though, Leonard is a fairly introverted and quiet guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if working out has been his primary outlet for a long time.

I’m waiting for antistratfordian’s comment where he finds a way to disparage Kawhi and the Spurs for this… haha

“the personification of the Spurs and their insanely high level of professionalism”

That is music to my ears (or eyes)!

    Come on Kawhi…

Even if you workout for 10 hrs or so each day… that leaves plenty of time to give the trophy some love…

How many of ya’ll work for 10 hrs or more each day and still give your kids and wife some lovin’?

“Larry” is gonna be mad at you Kawhi… he’ll come to resent you… to NOT want to visit you next summer…

Kahwi is a hard worker, even during the off season. That’s typical of anyone in the Spurs’ organization !! They are blue collar and the average guy, like me, appreciates that!!

Nice to see him not resting after winning the title. I get the feeling he may not be overly comfortable with random people he doesn’t know, or with fame for that matter, so didn’t feel the need to drag it around bragging with people he didn’t know (other than his camp). Nothing wrong with that, just as there is nothing wrong with those that do make more appearances with it. To each their own.
