Waitress wouldn’t serve Stephen Curry alcohol because he didn’t have ID

You’ve got to applaud this waitress — she was doing her job.

Stephen Curry is the baby faced killer of the Golden State Warriors, a 24 point a game All-Star, a household name and recognized face in the basketball world… but not everybody is into that world. You’re reading this story in the middle of August on a basketball blog, you’re pretty much an NBA junkie, but a lot of people get through life just fine without the Association or even hoops.

Stephen Curry and his wife went out to dinner one night and ran into one of those people — and she wasn’t going to serve him a drink. Curry told the story about getting carded and not having his ID to Dime Magazine, as passed along by

“It happened at California Pizza Kitchen in the Bay Area like 15 minutes from my house. We went, I tried to get a drink after the season, that’s exactly what happened. Me and my wife went to dinner, and we didn’t have our daughter with us, and she was with the babysitter. So I ordered a beer, and I didn’t have my ID with me, ‘cause I left it in the car and I thought she’d recognize me.

“So the waitress asks, and I was like, ‘Uh, is your manager here,’ and I took my chances with him knowing who I was, and … he knew.

“But she basically, yeah, she wouldn’t give me the benefit of the doubt, knowing that I didn’t look like I was over 21 and not knowing who I was.”

That is awesome.

Curry did get his beer to go with his pizza… which means Curry is clearly not on the Paleo diet with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade this summer. Not that he should be. Curry doesn’t need to be on any kind of diet, if he loses any more weight he could get blown away by a gust of wind, like a dandelion.

  4. antistratfordian - Aug 14, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Hmmm. Just go out to your car. Is that such an inconvenience? Or you must you go on an ego trip and ask for the manager because the server didn’t know who you were? Ridiculous.

    • bigtganks - Aug 14, 2014 at 5:43 PM

I woulda said “yeah, I know who you are… but I still need your ID”

    • twinfan24 - Aug 14, 2014 at 10:35 PM

I had this same thought. I thought maybe he left it at home, in which case I could see him asking for the manager even though it is a famous person ploy. But, he was just too lazy to walk out to his car? That is big ego at play.

  7. ProBasketballPundit - Aug 14, 2014 at 6:11 PM

I don’t think it’s wrong of Curry to expect to be recognized. The bay area loves their Warriors. And Steph is easily the most recognizable athlete in the city… or maybe second to Kaepernick. Let him have his celebrity. He’s awesome.

    • eugenesaxe1 - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:17 PM

      So he’s above the law.

      • money2long - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:37 PM

ID is used to identify someone unrecognized.
For instance, I doubt someone gets carded after the hundredth time of entering the same liquor joint.
If curry is recognized, there is no being above the law here.
It would have been funny if curry went on his phone to an authorized site like and found his player profile and pointed to his DOB.

      • twinfan24 - Aug 14, 2014 at 10:38 PM

But, what if it were someone that just looked a lot like Curry, but isn’t him nor is of age?

      • money2long - Aug 14, 2014 at 11:54 PM

And how does the case you laid out change anything with having an ID?
People with fake IDs try to look like the people on it

    • jimmy53 - Aug 15, 2014 at 8:52 AM

it’s not like he’s a world famous athlete—he’s known to basketball fans and that’s it. If you don’t watch basketball then why would you have any idea who he is—it’s not like he has a national media presence….

    • asimonetti88 - Aug 15, 2014 at 12:11 PM

I’d argue Kaepernick, Harbaugh, Tim Lincecum and Buster Posey are all more recognizable.

  8. breezysmeezy - Aug 14, 2014 at 6:18 PM

So Curry played the don’t you know who I am card lol. I agree though why didn’t he just go out to his car and get it

  9. chaseutley - Aug 14, 2014 at 6:20 PM

God for her! Dude still looks like a 18-year-old….. Not that that’s a “bad” thing, but he definitely doesn’t look over 30.

  10. ans2034 - Aug 14, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Glad she did her job. My guess is she does not watch bball and does not know who he is.

Can’t fault someone for following the rules. It would be her job on the line.

Curry will get over it and probably already has. If not he has his millions to comfort him.

  11. mackcarrington - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:22 PM

She did what she was supposed to do. Sometimes law enforcement conducts stings on restaurants and bars to see if people get served without proper ID’s. That being said, who in this day and age goes out for an evening without any kind of ID?

    • money2long - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:40 PM

      Yea curry went undercover.

    • metalhead65 - Aug 14, 2014 at 10:50 PM

well if you are an illegal you don’t one because that would be racist to expect you to follow the law like citizens have to. in fact if that was the case they would sue the restaurant for profiling and win.

  12. cbrown386 - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:43 PM

What’s with athletes not carrying ID? I’ve heard multiple stories from friends about having to identify athletes trying to make gigantic bank withdrawals and trying to get in bars that don’t bring their ID.

  13. csbanter - Aug 14, 2014 at 7:53 PM

That would not have happened in some NBA cities because of some women are sooooo star struck, hungry ho’s would’ve given him alcohol, head and then some.

  14. tcclark - Aug 14, 2014 at 8:58 PM

I would not be surprised to hear that the manager got fired for that. California Pizza Kitchen is a huge company and a corporation like that tends to be very strict on rules. That could have just been a guy who looked like Steph Curry and the Manager served him alcohol. That not only puts him, but the entire company at risk. I would hate to hear that the guy got fired because Steph just needed to have a beer with his pizza. I love Steph, but next time bring your ID or order a Coke.

  18. hdsnake867 - Aug 15, 2014 at 11:28 AM

Curry should feel lucky that he looks underage. He’ll appreciate it even more when he’s in his 40s. At the least, this is an amusing anecdote. At the most, this is an off-season non-story. At 67, I don’t get carded anymore, but when I was as old as 40, I would still get carded on occasion. When I did, I would make a joke about it by saying that I had underwear that was 21 years old.
