The NBA’s preseason schedule (and a little of the regular season) is starting to come out, but the NBA added one more stop on its global tour for this coming season.

South Africa.

The NBA made it official while in that nation, reports the Associated Press.

Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum made the announcement Tuesday in Johannesburg, where the NBA is holding a Basketball without Borders camp. He said all proceeds will go to charity and that becoming the first U.S. professional league to play a game on the continent is “just an evolution of our commitment to continuing to bring basketball to the continent of Africa.”

“I think that’s a pretty big deal,” Tatum said.

It is. Of course, there are a few details not made public yet, such as what teams, when, and what charities are going to benefit. Okay, more than a few, although you can bet the NBA has this pretty well figured out and is just hammering out the details.

The NBA’s globalization efforts are not going to slow down with David Stern out of the commissioner’s chair — the owners are about making money and there is a lot of it to be made with the NBA being the global leader of basketball. They’re good with it so long as they are the ones profiting.
