Report: Larry Drew on his way to becoming Cavaliers assistant

Larry Drew wanted to join Doc Rivers’ staff with the Clippers. Instead, the Clippers hired Mike Woodson and Sam Cassell.

The recently fired Bucks coach has another shot at finding a landing spot.

Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe:

It appears that former Bucks coach Larry Drew, fired in controversial fashion last month when Jason Kidd decided to pursue the job, is making progress in joining David Blatt’s staff with the Cavaliers. Drew has ties with Blatt, who contacted him soon after he was fired by Milwaukee.

Say what you want about Drew’s coaching chops, but the man knows where to become an assistant coach.

Rivers’ two assistants to depart this summer – Alvin Gentry (Warriors) and Tyronn Lue (Cavaliers) – got paid, and Rivers has a strong track record of grooming head coaches.

But if Los Angeles didn’t work, Cleveland is an excellent fallback option.

LeBron James’ teams tend to win, and winning sure boosts the credibility of assistant coaches. Plus, neither the Cavaliers’ head coach (David Blatt) nor lead assistant (Lue) has NBA head-coaching experience. Drew – who led the Hawks before the Bucks – provides helpful perspective, and he’ll get credit for that if Cleveland wins. The arrangement could work very well for all sides.

Maybe the Cavaliers will even win back-to-back games next season.
