LeBron James cuts carbs, looks thin (photo)

Aug 4, 2014, 11:30 PM EST

LeBron James LeBron James

Remember that photo that maybe made Kobe Bryant look fat?

Kobe probably wasn’t fat. Most likely, it was just an unflattering shadow and/or unflattering life jacket.

At risk of repeatedly reading too much into a superstar’s offseason photo, here’s LeBron James looking pretty thin:

This time, the apparent weight change is backed by reporting.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN:

LeBron has bulked up throughout his career, increasingly playing power forward rather than small forward. I’m not certain which fact drives the other, but I figure both contribute to the other.

So why get lean now?

Maybe LeBron knows the Cavaliers will have someone else playing a bulk of the power forward minutes.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes before Kevin Love and the rest of the Cavaliers are all LeBronning.

  2. eventhorizon04 - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:41 PM

As LeBron was asked to play more and more power forward with the Heat as part of their smallball lineups in 2012 and 2013, his defensive stats when defending wing players dropped from “elite” early in the Big 3 era to closer to “average.”

Dropping weight and perhaps deferring more of the scoring burden to Irving, Waiters, and Love could lead to resurgence defensively for LeBron. Even for a freak athlete, it’s hard to weigh 270 lbs and still guard 220 lbs wing players at a high level. Playing at closer to his rookie weight of “just” 250 lbs could improve his lateral movement skills back to what they were when he was younger.

I was thinking the same thing. When I saw the picture the first thing I thought was, “ah, he’s gunning for that DPOY award.”

      • cantonbound13 - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Were your pants on when you looked at the pictures?

      • antistratfordian - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Why do you want to know? Ran out of spank bank material? You want to stalk my facebook, bro?

    • handsomerob86 - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:09 AM

Man, he looks thin in that picture. I feel like he lost a lot of muscle. I’m not sure that is good, but then again, KD has been thin forever.

    • spursareold - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:51 AM

Or maybe, at 29 , he’s just past his physical prime. That usually comes around 26-27 for male professional athletes. He’ll never again be that player that showed up in Miami in 2010.

  3. andreboy1 - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:44 PM

How the hell can you tell from those pics if he’s lost “significant” weight?

    • 1friendofthepeople - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:47 PM

Its his face where it actually shows.

      • rexgrossman8 - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:58 PM

He’s just wearing a bigger hat. Makes him look smaller. May have also cut back on the booze.

      • spursareold - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:54 AM

No, rex. You can see that his cheekbones are rather prominent, and you can see angles on his face that you don’t see in the “before” pics.

*LeBron James cuts HGH, looks thin.

    • blogsk3tball - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:42 AM

      Beat me too it !

    • trevor123698 - Aug 5, 2014 at 3:15 AM

no. i hate him more than anything. but he looks primed to do something special.

    • jimeejohnson - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:34 AM

You takin’ over for another New Yawk loser cantonpeabrain? You’re fully equipped to do it: you’re wrong 99% of the time. When you root for a lousy, crappy, overrated, LOSER team like the Knicks, it’s normal to be jealous of winners.

    • cantonbound13 - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:32 PM

      No biogenesis labs in Ohio.

  5. 1friendofthepeople - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:52 PM

When does this guy stop thinking about basketball?

I gotta say I admire the way he has committed to being the best player he can possibly be.

  6. nfl4days - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:53 PM

There a many factors that go into this how a person looks on any particular day,so it’s hard to say he has lost significant weight from these photos alone. However, expect to see a more explosive LeBron since he won’t weigh as much as most power forwards.

  7. hurricanegrabowski - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:54 PM

Geez, what’s the next thing that’s going to be reported on for LeBron?

    “LeBron changes conditioner, still balding”

    • mackcarrington - Aug 5, 2014 at 4:44 PM

If that’s the case, it would open up a new endorsement avenue for Men’s Rogain.

  8. borisalessandri - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:01 AM

The guy is just STACKED!! He’s built like a brick house and all that added bulk will take a toll on his joints/body as he continues to play. Duncan has been doing this for the past 3 yrs and it has lengthened his career. I’m sure LBJ is thinking about the long run and is taking care of his body before he starts to have knee flare ups

    • 1friendofthepeople - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:06 AM

and the fact that the T-Wolves have agree to trade them Kevin Love, a power forward

  9. 00maltliquor - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:02 AM

He looks sucked up on that pookie. How is this supposed to help him being fragile? He is a beast when he’s bulked up. He’s looking crazy now, looks like an imposter.

    • 22yearsagotoday - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:30 AM

Maybe he’s planning on a move to L.A., the thin capital of the world.

  10. jimb25 - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:17 AM

As soon as I read the title “LeBron trying to be like KD physically!” lol

  11. money2long - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:30 AM

A night of cramps in the finals changes a man.

  12. antistratfordian - Aug 5, 2014 at 1:00 AM

Compared to LeBron in Cleveland the first time around, the LeBron in Miami was a heavier version. I don’t know why that was, but maybe it had something to do with Miami asking him to play so much PF. Perhaps now with Love in the fold he’s going to go back to a lighter build?

Granted, we’re talking about the difference between something like 255 and 270, so he’s never going to be that light.

  13. trevor123698 - Aug 5, 2014 at 3:18 AM

the only reason he looked bigger while heate carbs is because the only thing the body stores as far is carbs. He is a machine. He is running the right fuel in his body now. IF you think he looks bad, then you look bad and need to check yourself in a mirror. He is going to be more powerful than ever. I hate him. But he looks focused to me. It is in the eyes.

  14. championmamba - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:22 AM

wow, no more HGH, the “REAL” Lebron James………loll

  15. obmig - Aug 5, 2014 at 7:23 AM

He will last longer because of it. Less stress on those legs.

  16. timberwolvesbrisin - Aug 5, 2014 at 9:28 AM

Are those some Andre Agasi’s he’s wearing?

    • 22yearsagotoday - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:31 AM

If so, LeBron either needs to go bald faster or grow his hair way long!

  17. davidly - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:40 PM

This supports what I’ve been hearing all along from my source: that it’s gonna be a straight up Irving for Love, and LBJ is gonna run the offense. Y’all youngbloods just don’t understand.

  18. ogbobbydeas - Aug 5, 2014 at 4:22 PM

maybe he will play the 2 and Corey Brewer the 3 , Love at the 4 and whoever at the 5, with Kyrie at the 1

No more HGH could be a factor as well. LOLOL no one drops that much weight in 2 months , unless you stop your injections lol

  19. cantonbound13 - Aug 5, 2014 at 6:35 PM

Windhorst has been stealing his carbs.

  20. seasickcecil - Aug 5, 2014 at 8:52 PM

@SamAmicoFSO: LeBron James worked out with Mike Miller today at Akron St. V, source says. (P.S. Our secret, but source is LeBron.) http://t.co/dlY0PaJ5Xm

  21. djshnooks - Aug 6, 2014 at 7:47 AM

    Windhorst should follow suit…lol.

  22. djshnooks - Aug 6, 2014 at 7:49 AM

Or maybe it had to do with that HGH clinic down in Miami…there’s a thought.
