Report: Longtime referee Dick Bavetta retiring

Jul 30, 2014, 6:05 PM EDT

Dick Bavetta Dick Bavetta

The NBA was reportedly trying to nudge Dick Bavetta into retirement in 2010.

But the referee – famous for his race with Charles Barkley – returned and continued his stories career.

Four years later, Bavetta is apparently ready to hang ‘em up.

Ailene Voisin of The Sacramento Bee:

It’s fitting Bavetta reffed four years longer than the league wanted. It just helps preserve my memory him as stubborn.

But, for better or worse, he was also a character, and if he’s retiring, the NBA loses part of its personality.

Mo Bevetta Blues. Hey, take it easy, Richard. It was nice knowing ya.

Can’t remember any games he reffed, but I will always remember that race.

Had to cover his gambling debts, first. God knows he’s been swinging games for bettors BLATANTLY for a couple decades. Loved trying to get the team being blown out back into games with dubious call after dubious call. Did it several times last season, a couple of them against my team, I recall.

    Somewhere, Tim Duncan smiles

Bavetta isn’t Duncan’s nemesis, Joey “bagadonuts” Crawford is. The Coyote mascot WILL, however, breathe a sigh of relief.

Please take Joey Crawford with you

    • amlowlife - Jul 30, 2014 at 7:32 PM

      Crawford is the worst.

    • yesser12 - Jul 30, 2014 at 8:19 PM

He will probably ref to his last breath.

How old? Our intrepid reporters don’t say? How long in the NBA? Why do i read this incompetent site?

OKC just lost one of their big 3.

OKC must be grieving big time.

  9. jerdogthompson - Jul 30, 2014 at 11:07 PM

My bad, Crawford is one of the OKC big three. Guess they still have a chance.

This site REALLY needs an editor. His name is Knick Bavetta, get it right for crying out loud.
