Report: Timberwolves have talked to Sixers about Thaddeus Young as Kevin Love replacement

Jul 28, 2014, 3:44 PM EST

Minnesota is not going to find a Kevin Love replacement. Not really.

There are not guys with his skills sets floating around (which is why they can demand name players like Andrew Wiggins or Klay Thompson in trades). Love is a big man who can shoot the three, is one of the best rebounds in the game and is the best outlet passer in the NBA.

But if and when (more like when) Minnesota moves Love in a trade they will need someone to play his role, and they like the idea of that being Thaddeus Young of the Sixers, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves, while continuing to discuss trade proposals that would send Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers, have been exploring their options for acquiring Young from the Sixers, either through a separate transaction or as part of an expanded Love trade.

Whether Philadelphia proves willing to part with Young, though, remains to be seen.

They’re willing.

They have been for a while, they just want the right mix of young players and/or picks in return. The Sixers are a rebuilding team acquiring young assets – Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid — and they want more they can put in that mix. Minnesota has picks and assets Philly could want.

Young is a very athletic forward, one who averaged 17.9 points a game last season and in the past has shown to be an efficient player when not forced to carry as much of a load as he was last season. He doesn’t shoot the three or rebound on the level of Love, but he is a quality player that could help Minnesota not go into full rebuilding mode after a deal.

Much like the Love trade itself, don’t expect this to come down soon, it will be closer to training camp. But it is something to watch for if and when (more likely when) the Love trade does go down.

Give us Zach Lavine and we’ll think about it.

    • sumkat - Jul 28, 2014 at 3:54 PM

I’d do it for their 2015, top 5 protected.

Wolves won’t make the playoffs without Love, but with Young and whatever they get back for Love, they probably won’t be bottom 5 either

      • rrhoe - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:08 PM

The Wolves didn’t make the playoffs with Love

      • muhangis - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:04 PM

It’s better to be better 5 and get high draft picks or a franchise changing player or star, than to be stuck in the middle of the road not going anywhere for centuries, for example Atlanta or Phoenix.

    • nvandy42 - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:01 PM

riiiiiight….. You’re gonna end up with a potential pick and JJ Barea. Enjoy

  2. lbeezyse - Jul 28, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Young will probably be part of a 3 team trade that nets the 76ers Waiters.

Levine will not be going anywhere. Maybe Shabazz would be part of a package. I for one would rather get Wiggins & go full tank & get a top 3 pick next year. So far Flip has done a good job drafting LeVine, Georgei, & Shabazz.

  3. kinggw - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:03 PM

He hasn’t helped Philly avoid full rebuilding mode. If Minny is trying to make the playoffs post-Love, Young is probably not the right guy. He’s a tweener, who doesn’t do anything particularly well.

    • psubeerman21 - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:12 PM

He is a perfect energy guy off the bench. That’s about it. He hasn’t developed as he should have, and I’m guessing that’s why the sixers are good with moving him.

      • geejon - Jul 28, 2014 at 5:42 PM

The 76ers “are good with moving him” because he can opt out of his deal after this year and get a much bigger, better deal than the one he’s on so Philly is not going to risk losing him for nothing.

He can score inside and outside, has lately moved his range to the 3-point line, rebounds, picks up steals. He contributes more to a team than some bigger names in this league who are nothing but inefficient, volume scorers that do nothing else.

He’s paid his dues in this league but is still relatively young and has told Philly he doesn’t want to play his best years in their rebuilding program (but hasn’t been a jerk about it) so Philly will oblige him and if they can get a lottery pick in next year’s draft in return, they’d probably be happy but they’re not going to give him away.

  4. psubeerman21 - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Minny gets Bennet, Wiggins, and Thad Young. Cavs get Love and a 2nd from the sixers. Sixers get Waiters, a bad minny contract, a bad Cleveland contract, and a cleveland 1st. I think this would work; Cleveland won’t want a 1st since it will be a guarenteed contract and they will probably be at or near the luxury tax; Minnesota gets rid of a bad contract and brings in young talent with a veteren in Young; Philly gets another draft pick, a young player, and takes some garbage money in the process (which they almost have to do since they are so far below the salary floor).

    • psubeerman21 - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Cleveland doesn’t have any terrible contracts. Maybe we take Barea (1 year/4.5 million) and Corey Brewer (2 years/9.6 million) from Minnesota.

    • jeffkx - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:37 PM

Not a chance in Hell that Cleveland gives up Bennett, Wiggins, Waiters and a 1st for Love. Dream on.

      • psubeerman21 - Jul 28, 2014 at 5:56 PM

The first is irrelevant since they would be drafting in the upper 20’s every year anyway. They won’t want the pick since the contract is guarenteed. It almost has negative value for a team with three superstars. And you tell me – do you think Cleveland wants to keep waiters after the nonsense last year with Irving? I’m not saying Cleveland can’t get more back in return; perhaps there are other players or picks they would want in return in a similar package. But they would have no issue moving Waiters if the chance came.

      • geejon - Jul 28, 2014 at 6:02 PM

Remove Waiters and you probably have the makings of a deal everyone is happy with.

        Cleveland gets Love …

T-Wolves get Wiggins, Bennett, #1 pick from Cle, Young from Philly

Philly gets 1st rounder, take on contracts of Alexey Shved and Kevin Martin all from Minny

  5. lbeezyse - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:41 PM

Mn wiggs, bennett, & young + 1 first rd pick

    Cavs Love & Martin

    6ers Waiters, Berea, & Cleve 1st

    • muhangis - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:10 PM

Rather keep rising young Waiters around than the old, declining Martin

I never understand the trade young talents for the old washed out player deals, unless you want to keep your window of opportunity not beyond 1 or 2 years, for a championship.

Too many people think too often too short term!

  6. seasickcecil - Jul 28, 2014 at 4:54 PM

@WojYahooNBA: Free agent guard Mo Williams is nearing an agreement with Minnesota, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

  7. zukny1 - Jul 28, 2014 at 5:01 PM

Sixers are not taking on extra contracts & giving away Thad Young for anything less than a 1st round pick from Minny or a hot young prospect player (whoever is left over from Cleveland)

Sixers really like Thad Young and there was a reason he wasn’t the only player that didn’t get moved last season. This talk of Sixers getting back Cleveland 1st round pick is laughable. Dion Waiters is also Laughable.

Young >>>>>> Waiters EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK.

Zach Levine, Come To Philly !

  12. dacapt704 - Jul 28, 2014 at 5:52 PM

This will ensure the TWolves fans renew their season tickets now…

  13. mungman69 - Jul 28, 2014 at 8:23 PM

What has Thad Young done that he might end up in Minnesota in the winter? He quietly had a very good year in Philly. For all of his hard work he gets frostbite on another bad team. Come on Sixers, either trade him to a contender or send him where it’s warm.

  14. blogsk3tball - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:37 PM

Wolves – Wiggins, Thad Young, First Rd from Cavs (Lesser of Cavs or Miami), Cavs First (from Memphis)
    Cavs – Love
Philly – Martin, Bennett, Cash from cavs

One thing i dont get – If LeBron only signed a two year deal, how do the Cavs plan to re-sign him with cap room if they Have Irving and Love on the max, as well as Thompson, Waiters, and Varejao on new deals!

  15. xxakshunxx - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:59 PM

Shame for Thad he won’t go to a contender.. granted he’s getting paid regardless, but for being on a bad Sixers team for so long he’s pretty much never said he wanted out or ever caused a fuss.. would love to see him on a Western Conference team being the first or second guy off the bench

  16. brento1499 - Jul 29, 2014 at 10:02 AM

this will fall through. the twolves will need thad to promise them that he’ll opt in but he wont give it to them
