USA Basketball announced players for the 2014 Select Team that will train July 28-31 with the National Team in Las Vegas, and as always, the group is comprised of younger players with promise who are being given a chance to enter the USA Basketball System.

From the official release:

“Named to the 2014 USA Basketball Select squad were: Harrison Barnes (Golden State Warriors); Trey Burke (Utah Jazz); Jimmy Butler (Chicago Bulls); Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors), Tim Hardaway Jr. (New York Knicks); Tobias Harris (Orlando Magic); Doug McDermott (Chicago Bulls);Victor Oladipo (Orlando Magic); Mason Plumlee (Brooklyn Nets); Miles Plumlee (Phoenix Suns);Marcus Smart (Boston Celtics); Dion Waiters (Cleveland Cavaliers); and Cody Zeller (Charlotte Hornets).”

“USA Basketball’s Select Teams are critical for getting some of the game’s brightest and most promising young players experience at the USA National Team level, and getting them into our pipeline,” said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball National Team managing director. “Again this summer, as was done in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012, the members of the USA Select Team will play an important role in helping prepare the USA National Team for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

“Being chosen for the Select Team is an honor and an important step in becoming involved in USA Basketball’s National Team program in the future. In the past, current national team players like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, as well as many other outstanding players got their USA National Team start through the Select Team.”

Colangelo couldn’t possibly take his role with USA Basketball any more seriously, and wants to see a certain level of commitment from players before he allows just anyone to participate. Putting the work in as part of the Select Team is the first step in that process.

Dion Waiters – I can’t think of someone I’d like to play basketball with less. He’s the kind of guy that sucks all the fun out of a pick up game.

He seems like the only dude in Cleveland that doesn’t like what’s unfolding down there. “WINNING? FORGET THAT. WHERE’D MY MINUTES GO??”

List of USA camp invitees or list of names Flip Saunders demanding in trade for Love?

Pretty interesting combo of players. Only two really prominent defensive players with Butler and Green, and the only rookies are McDermott and Smart. Mason Plumlee I think has been a bit overlooked, he could really be a big contributor for the Nets this year, especially if Lopez continues with his injury problems.

Kinda makes me wonder why they didn’t bring some other big names into the fold with some high ceilings such as Carter-Williams, Parker, or Wiggins. Jerry Colangelo clearly pointed out only NBA superstars as players coming from the Select Team, I find it a bit odd that they didn’t go for more star power.

Wiggins? I heard his Cavs buddy Thompson would love to participate. And what about Nicholson, Ollynyk or Ennis? Why not to recruit Canadians for the future USA national team.

MCW has a shoulder injury and had surgery a month or two ago. Otherwise, I’m sure he would have been included (and I think that was actually reported a few days ago, although I may have been mistaken). Although I’m somewhat surprised Nerlens didn’t get an invite because of his defensive prowess and the way he lit up the summer league.

Because that’s the negotiation angle an agent will take for Waiters on his next contract “but but we are winning!!”

I’m guessing people haven’t really watched Waiters play and are just going off of a couple tweets or reports (that were disputed). Dude can ball.
