Report: Timberwolves re-sign Robbie Hummel to one-year contract

Robbie Hummel couldn’t stay healthy at Purdue.

After being drafted No. 58 by the Timberwolves in 2012, he went to Spain – and couldn’t stay healthy there.

Minnesota signed Hummel to a one-year, minimum-salary contract last summer. Then, he finally stayed healthy enough to do what he does: Shoot 3-pointers.

Playing 12.4 minutes per game in 53 contests, including five starts, last season, Hummel attempted a majority of his shots from beyond the arc. The 6-foot-8 forward made 36 percent of his 3-pointers.

That earned him a second one-year deal.

Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today:

Hummel’s minimum salary is $816,482, and the Timberwolves can re-sign him for up to $979,778 using Early Bird Rights. It sounds as if Hummel signed with the Early Bird Exception.

Minnesota could have also used a portion of the mid-level exception to sign him, but anything above a minimum contract already seems generous.

Hummel, 25, probably doesn’t have much upside remaining. But as long as he protects the ball as well as he did last season, he’ll get a chance to keep making rosters. Hummel turned the ball over just 10 times in 655 minutes. Only Ryan Anderson played more and posted a lower turnover percentage.

Hard not to root for this kid.

I’m an IU grad and I always wanted this kid to do well and I felt for him when he was injured in college.

Hope he’s able to play at least a few years and is smart with the money he gets.
