Lakers waive Kendall Marshall, sign Xavier Henry to one year deal

One of these moves will go over well, the other might add to the frustration of a Lakers’ fan base already fuming over the picking up of Carlos Boozer off the scrap heap….

The Lakers have waived fan favorite from last season Kendall Marshall.

However they are bringing back Xavier Henry on a one year deal.

Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news (the Lakers have confirmed the Marshall move).

By waiving Marshall the Lakers may have room to re-sign Ryan Kelly. If it came down to a choice between those two the Lakers made the right call.

We should talk about how Henry fits in the Lakers system… except they don’t have a coach or a system yet.

Both of these moves are in part about keeping the Lakers’ roster stocked with short-term deals that let them chase free agents next season.

Henry had his best season as a pro last year, although how much of that was numbers inflation from the free-flowing Mike D’Antoni offense remains to be seen. He averaged 10 points a game with a career best .511 true shooting percentage (close to the league average but a little below it) although a chunk of that came because he hit long twos better than he ever had in his career. That said last season was a leap forward for him up to decent rotation player level and he understandably wants to build on that. In whatever system the Lakers play.

Plus, maybe we will see more of this from Henry.

Marshall, a pass-first point guard, also looked better in D’Antoni’s offense because there was spacing and ball movement. However, at Summer League he is shooting 31.4 percent overall and 23.1 percent from three and that remains the issue — you can play off him and dare him to shoot. Marshall shot almost 40 percent from three last season but those numbers tailed off after a hot start that seems to have been an aberration. That said, if he clears waivers (and he very well might) the Lakers might re-sign him for the minimum.
