You’ve gotta hear this one. So, Ricky Rubio’s agent wants –

OK, let me try again. So, Ricky Rubio’s agent wants a contract extension worth –

I just can’t do it without laughing. Here’s Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News (hat tip: Matt Moore of

This all goes back to former Timberwolves general manager David Khan refusing to offer Kevin Love the designated-player five-year max extension, saving it for his prized Rubio. That offended Love, and it’s allowing him to leave Minnesota a year early.

To double down on that mistake would be absurd. To do so after Khan has been ousted, thankfully for the Timberwolves, is impossible.

Flip Saunders is under no obligation to fulfill Khan’s ridiculous promises.

Rubio is a fine point guard. He’s a nifty passer and effective defender at a position where defense is lacking, but his inability to shoot from outside really limits his impact. He’s just 23, so I expect him to improve, but you can’t pay him anywhere near the max until he shows much more progress.

If Dan Fegan wants to discuss a reasonable extension before the Oct. 31 deadline, I’m sure Saunders would listen. Otherwise, Rubio will become a restricted free agent next summer.

Some European team would be my guess. Maybe he can join with Darko Milicic and Frederic Weis and form a “Big” Three in Europe.

I just choked at that thought hahahahaha

Great the Wolves are going to lose both Love and the Spanish kid? Just contract this pathetic excuse of a team now.

I’m from MN aka the NBA black hole… giving Rubio a max contract is the most absurd scenario I can think of without getting REALLY creative. Good thing I just read this article as a laugh… I don’t even really follow the wolves – they suck really really really bad.

Mo Williams, Eric Maynor, George Hill, Patty Mills, Kemba Walker are all players who are not all stars (Mo was once) but are better than Rubio.

  11. dlitting - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:45 PM

there was a time when people mighta sorta supported Rubio getting near max money, based on a growth curve they thought was coming. last year probably put that time in the rear review mirror

Hey Flip, instead of trying to get an “established” player, how about you trade Love and Rubio for picks, picks and more picks. Draft some players and sell them on being there. Convincing guys that they are the key to building a team isn’t hard. You have to demonstrate that they are part of the process and not a commodity. It’s not that people don’t want to play there, you have to give them a reason to come, and that starts with a supporting cast. Watch Philly in 4 years, free agents will jump at the opportunity to play with their core once it’s established. Stop wishing and be proactive.

Tired of hearing about Love’s “offensive” contract. Enough…he signed it.

You know, I don’t mind a free-agent, or even restricted free agent shopping himself around, but Love is still under contract, making millions, and he should honor that contract instead of disrespecting his team, teammates & fans by making noise about wanting out. He’s started to remind me of another diva who played for the Wolves…Christian Laettner.

Most fans I talk to here in MN want to see him go. His head has gotten much bigger than his talent warrants.

Poor Minnesota. Why does the universe always troll them?
