Report: Lakers will hire a coach in a week, maybe two, whenever

Jul 14, 2014, 11:38 PM EDT

Cleveland Cavaliers v Los Angeles Lakers Cleveland Cavaliers v Los Angeles Lakers

Twenty days ago, ESPN reported Byron Scott was “the leading candidate” to become the Lakers’ next head coach.

Since, one of the other leading candidates (maybe even the leading other candidate), Lionel Hollins, became the Nets’ head coach. Another interviewee in the mix, Kurt Rambis, joined the Knicks as an assistant.

Kobe Bryant has even thrown his support behind Scott.

Everything is pointing toward Scott, and the Lakers are so inspired by his candidacy, they’re rushing to… do absolutely nothing.

Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com:

The Los Angeles Lakers expect to hire a head coach in the next “week or two,” according to a league source, but do not consider the interview process to be finished with.

even he would likely need another interview before being named coach, according to the source.

Maybe the Lakers are still going with their original plan – letting their top free agent choose the next coach. That can take a little time for everything to unfold.

I wonder whom Nick Young will choose.

Two coaches? Makes sense. One for Kobe and one for the rest of the team.

The NBA might be calling for the forced sale of the wrong LA team. The Lakers MGT. is clueless as to what to do to properly run this once great organization. It is really a crime to see what is going on or better yet not going on.

Kupchak needs to be fired. The team is in utter disarray.

    • apkyletexas - Jul 14, 2014 at 11:57 PM

Except that Jim Buss needs to be fired first.

    • adoombray - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:38 AM

Kupchak is nothing but, and has never been anything but a yes man to the Buss family.

Doesn’t training camp start soon? And the Lakers don’t even have a coach yet?

  5. tbutler704 - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:11 AM

If I were a Laker fan, I’d hope Dr. Buss’ stupid son gets bored and sells the team…..but I’m not so good job Jimmy.

    Lakers are the new Knicks.

    • paleihe - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:29 AM

How quickly we forget. Lakers won a title in 2010. Holy hell, it’s like people lose their minds if the Lakers aren’t winning every year.

Comparing a team that hasn’t won in 40 years, to a team that’s won five times, and been to two other finals appearances, since 2000, is utterly ridiculous.

Rebuilding/retooling, whatever you wanna call it, takes time.

      • 00maltliquor - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:34 AM

        Riiight!!?? Sheesh, these people!

It’s all good, most of them have been waiting their entire lives to mock The Lakers, while secretly deep down hoping/wishing/praying their team can be just 25% as successful as them.

      • sportsfan18 - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:15 AM

But Kobe himself said this team wasn’t going to nosedive.

You’re right, call it whatever you want (rebuilding, retooling, nosediving), it DOES take time.

        this yr will be rough.

they should make the playoffs in the 15/16 season, but not really compete for anything.

so, with a little luck in the draft and getting a name free agent next summer, they might have a chance to make some noise again in the 16/17 season

    • jimeejohnson - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:08 PM

He said “the new Knicks”, which is about as pathetically horrible as it gets.

sorry but hill is a better player than swaggyP and doesn’t have a stupid self given nickname. smh

  7. antistratfordian - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:31 AM

Ah. Whenever. I like that. My favorite headline of the week.

  8. cantonb0und13 - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:51 AM

Lakers don’t deserve any more blogs for rest of the year.

    • spthegr8 - Jul 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM

^^^ Yet, you felt the need too comment.? ^^^

  9. sdchicken - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:53 AM

Maybe Buss and Kupchak know it doesn’t really matter. Unless they land Love, Durant, or Westbrook in the next few years the Lakers will be fighting for an 8 seed in the playoffs and hoping to luck out with their one first round draft choice from Houston which shouldn’t be very high as they are a good team. If they land a star then they will hire a new coach anyways. Whoever they hire will last three years max.

  10. campcouch - Jul 15, 2014 at 1:14 AM

Mark Jackson is still out there, and he lives down the street. He may be a better fit for a young team. Finding a coach that’s satisfactory to Kobe for two years is nonsense. He’s received his appreciation in the form of a fat contract. This transition is not going a smooth because of him. Players talk, and when a star player is said to be difficult to be around, guys avoid him. Gasol bailed on the one guy in the organization that stumped for him! Get Jackson, he won’t take anything from Kobe and could mentor and be appreciated by the rest of the team.

    • sportsfan18 - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:18 AM

he works down the street you mean, on the street corner. it’s where he puts all other religions down except his.

      • adoombray - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:45 AM

Yeah, that video should have been taken as more disturbing than it was received. He was railing on anyone that wasn’t Christian. I wouldn’t want to play for him either

      • jimeejohnson - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Yo: that’s what Evangelicals are all about, kinda like the Taliban.

  11. sdlakerfan - Jul 15, 2014 at 1:47 AM

lol…If they screw up enough they won’t have to give their first round pick to the Suns next yr – it’s top 5 protected.

  12. 00maltliquor - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:30 AM

I’m actually down with them taking this long. I like Scott and think it would be a cool hire, but I would like them to do their due diligence and scour the Earth for the right guy. Not really sure if there are any other coaches they are taking into consideration that we don’t know about yet, but I hope they are not just going to settle.

    • sportsfan18 - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:19 AM

I’m down with the Lakers taking a long time before they’re good again myself.

  13. djlexluger - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:34 AM

I don’t think anyone forgot they won the title in 2010. But that was what 4 coaches ago?

    • 00maltliquor - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:19 PM

      Zing 😑

      • jimeejohnson - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:16 PM

The last time the Bulls won a title was…a lot longer ago than the Lakers. The Bulls would be the Knicks if not for MJ! Well, not that bad.

    • sportsfan18 - Jul 15, 2014 at 2:42 PM

they’ll be lucky if they only go through 4 more coaches before their next title

    • mazblast - Jul 16, 2014 at 1:05 AM

And an owner who didn’t belong on the short Buss.
