By signing Chandler Parsons to an offer sheet, the Mavericks greatly increased their chances of losing Vince Carter and Shawn Marion.

Dallas renounced those two to clear the cap room necessary for Parsons, though the Mavericks could still re-sign either. They just could no longer exceed the cap to do so or offer larger annual raises.

However, if the Rockets match Parsons’ offer, Dallas could un-renounce the players.

Carter isn’t waiting around for that.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Three years is a little long for Carter, who’s already 37, though the partial guarantee helps. He’s developed into a fine role player in the latter stages of his career, but the wear and tear is already showing.

He’ll add depth to the Grizzlies, though. With Mike Miller clearly headed out – possibly to join LeBron James in Cleveland – Memphis needs another wing. Carter won’t completely replace Miller’s 3-point shooting, but he’s still good from beyond the arc and a better defender.

Carter will help the Grizzlies compete for a playoff berth this season. In the two years beyond that, it gets dicey for a player so old, but the hope is he can keep filling the same role.
