Report: Heat going after, getting closer to deal with Luol Deng

Jul 12, 2014, 12:45 PM EDT

deng

Luol Deng is an All-Star small forward and there aren’t many places he could land where he would be a downgrade at the position.

Miami is one of them.

Yet he is a fit — the Heat need a three and they have some cap room. So Pat Riley has gone hard after Deng and appears to be making progress, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

The Rockets had been targeting Deng but that appears dead.

A lineup of Norris Cole (or Shabazz Napier), Dwyane Wade, Luol Deng, Josh McRoberts and Chris Bosh would be both entertaining and would put up some points. That’s two bigs who can space the floor and move the ball, guys who work off the ball and some interesting matchup problems. Not a lot of defense but they should score.

That’s a playoff lineup in the East.

Deng is a very strong defender who scores plenty of points as a third scoring option — he’s a good role man and gets hustle points in transition or working off the ball.

There are a lot of questions to be answered in Miami, things are certainly not going to be the same anymore. But with Deng in the fold along with Wade and Bosh, this is a team worth buying a ticket to see.

It’s going to be a challenging season for bosh, no lebron and prime wade to take pressure of him and make things easier for him. He’ll get more opportunities but, they’re won’t be easy like they used to be when lebron was there. And the media scrutiny that’ll come with him making all that money, it’s going to be a tough challenge.

Check Bosh’s stats before he came to Miami. He was essentially a 20/10 guy. Now he’s a better defender and a much better shooter.

Because he played third fiddle to LBJ and Wade and out of position lots of people don’t understand that Bosh is one of the better PFs in the league, up there with LA and Love.

hope he doesn’t go there, would be sad to see him play on a cheating team.

Was really hoping the Wizards were going to try and sign Deng.

    Hopefully there’s still a chance!

Getting a 3 is a good idea. An even better idea would be to get a defense/rebounding 5 so Bosh can stop having to play where he is uncomfortable and not all that good, and let him play the 4, where he excelled years ago.

I like Stephenson for the 3 in Miami…..he can score 12-18 points a game, guard the 2-3-4 positions, rebounds, hustles and doesn’t back down to no one…..and he’s younger….

Yeah, but UD will probably kill him at some point.

I hope that’s the Heats target if they don’t sign Deng.

“doesn’t back down to no one”?. In the playoffs, Shane Battier’s forearm to Stephenson’s neck sent him to the floor, avenging Stephenson’s earlier flagrant on Cole. Stephenson wasn’t heard from again.

Actually that was Dexter Pittman lol and if a 611 300 pound center forearm shivered u in ur neck, u would be dead urself! Lol I hated that kid this year (Lance) but he is tough and he would be awesome on Miami. But we getting Deng looks like

And they don’t have enough money to get Looney Stephenson – he turned down a huge contract to stay where he is now. He needs to seek professional help.

We could really use him in Phoenix.

Dwayne Wade should reach out to Stephenson to see if they are compatible. If so, go get him. To me he looked like a young Dwayne Wade two years ago. He has improved since then but is no Dwayne Wade. Perhaps under Wade’s tutelage, he can be.
