Report: Nick Young signing four-year, $21.5 million contract with Lakers

The Lakers trading for Jeremy Lin signaled they knew they were out of contention for Carmelo Anthony.

Without adding a star to play with Kobe Bryant, the Lakers are headed toward another lost season.

At least, this time, they should be more entertaining.

Kobe and Lin are draws, and so is Nick Young, a native Angelino who wanted to stay with his hometown team.

Shams Charania of RealGM:

Lin, Young, Kobe, Julius Randle and – if they somehow convince him to stay – Pau Gasol make a really intriguing lineup.

Not due to basketball. That team has almost no chance of making the playoffs in the West.

But the Lakers are full of personality, and that should sell tickets. Don’t underestimate what Young brings to the table. Based on what happened last year, I’m really hoping we get more of Young:

Wow what has happened to my team. Jim Buss has really run it into the ground. CAn’t even get above average guys to come. Sad state of affairs when Nick Young and Jeremy Lin are the only ones we can get. Oh well there’s always next year.

Hey now, it’s just a start. Have faith, bro.

  2. RonKarate - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Well, at least the Lakers will be fun to watch.

  3. handsomerob86 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:19 PM

Swaggy P era continues… Well Kobe, you can’t demand a trade, this is your bed, you got to lie in it. Maybe you guys will overachieve and hit the 8th seed? OH my bad, your in the West, well some team will be getting a good pick from ya..

  4. eugenesaxe1 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:25 PM

    He’s a blockhead.

  5. asimonetti88 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:26 PM

That’s a fairly reasonable contract for Swaggy P. With some of the huge contracts being thrown at role players this offseason, just over $5 million a year for him is fair enough.

I guess he shot his way into a job. Had he missed a few, they’d have drafted Exum and not needed him.

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:43 PM

Exum was already drafted when the Lakers picked

      • therealhtj - Jul 11, 2014 at 7:43 PM

Yeah, and had Nick Young not won a couple of extra games with an odd hot shooting night here and there, that could’ve been the Lakers pick.

    • spthegr8 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:48 PM

^^ Agreed. I like Swaggy’s game and the way he play’s. He will go @ anybody and is afraid of no one!! Hopefully Pau will re up too. I know we ain’t winning ish but a MUCH better product than last yr. IJS!! ^^

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Yeah the team already has more talent than last year, which is the first step towards improving.

    • duhwighthoward - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:54 PM

ASIMONETTI88, THANK YOU FOR ONCE AGAIN REMINDING US THAT YOU ARE ONE OF THE DUMBEST HUMAN BEINGS ALIVE.

IF YOU WATCHED BASKETBALL, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT NICK YOUNG THWARTED THE LAKERS’ TANKING PLANS, CAUSING THEM TO HAVE LOWER ODDS OF WINNING THE DRAFT LOTTERY.

I FEEL SORRY FOR JULIUS RANDLE.

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:59 PM

That’s a pretty ridiculous statement, only made more so by your lack of understanding how caps lock works. Even using advanced stat Win Shares, Swaggy was only worth 2.5 wins last year… which, by the way, wasn’t even his career high, and only 0.2 higher than the year before, a year when he was decidedly mediocre- enough so the Lakers were able to steal him for $1 million… Swaggy was good, but if he had any impact on making the Lakers better last year, it was making them fairly awful instead of just plain awful.

      • duhwighthoward - Jul 11, 2014 at 8:49 PM

ASIMONETTI88, I RETRACT MY PREVIOUS COMMENT. WHAT I SHOULD HAVE SAID WAS:

YOU ARE THE DUMBEST HUMAN BEING ALIVE.

NICK YOUNG PLAYED HIS BEST BASKETBALL AT THE END OF THE SEASON, WINNING GAMES WHERE THE LAKERS WERE HUGE UNDERDOGS, INCLUDING THE SECOND TO LAST GAME HE SCORED 40.

YOU’RE KEEPING AMERICA DOWN. DEPORT YOURSELF. GO TO SYRIA. JUST STOP MAKING THIS COUNTRY LOOK BAD.

  6. handsomerob86 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:39 PM

Lol, this off season is funny, Lakers a non-premium market? That won’t last. But the Heat, I think they are back to their normal mid market status for a while now.

  7. marbulz - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:39 PM

Maybe I should make a video how I get schooled by an eighth grader at my camp and then go for a raise go Lakers!

  8. bhunter1995 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:44 PM

Lin – Young – Kobe – Randle – Gasol/Boozer = 110 PPG scored per game and 120 PPG allowed per game. At least it will be a good ride for myself and the other Laker fans, we won’t play any defense but our offense will be fun to watch.

    • asimonetti88 - Jul 11, 2014 at 7:18 PM

Kobe won’t play the 3 at this age and with the wear and tear on him the last couple years… he’ll play the 2 and Young will handle forward duties

  9. milimpilim - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Nick is a solid long-term addition to the team. It’s only a matter of time until the Lakers land a big fish.

  10. charlescub80 - Jul 11, 2014 at 6:56 PM

Kobe may request to be traded to a contender. The roster is gonna be garbage. No shot at a title……

  11. lalifer - Jul 11, 2014 at 7:17 PM

“Yay”. Glad to hear this. Swaggy was one of my favorite players from last year. hey. if we won’t be contending, we need to at least be entertaining. Hope we get a couple more of the guys from last year. Nice to see Jim is at least adding for the future. Now if we can just pick back up Wesley. Under Byron Scott he should thrive.

  12. fordmandalay - Jul 11, 2014 at 7:29 PM

Free agency just started, and now that the LeBlockage is cleared there’s plenty of time for the Lakers to keep making moves. I also don’t have a whole lot of faith left in Kupchak, but let’s see what he can do. If they can swing Lance Stephenson and re-sign Pau, they could have a good chance.

  13. thehawg - Jul 11, 2014 at 9:41 PM

Has your agent called the Heat? I think you can do better.

  14. grizzlystrike - Jul 12, 2014 at 9:19 AM

This guy is such a clown. I love seeing the Lakers make bad moves and destroy the end of Kobe’s career
