Micky Arison handles LeBron James’ departure much better than Dan Gilbert did

Jul 11, 2014, 1:39 PM EDT

LeBron James, on his way to Cleveland, has forgiven Dan Gilbert for the petty letter the Cavaliers owner wrote four years ago.

Maybe that was easy for LeBron. Considering his previous stance on the letter – revealed both publicly and privately – I’d guess not.

But he won’t have to take the same step with Heat owner Micky Arison.

This is part of the reason the Heat signed LeBron in the first place.

Sure, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were big draws. But they were in Miami only because Pat Riley – another appealing factor – artfully managed the team’s roster to make room for multiple stars.

And who hired Riley? Arison.

The Heat are a well-run organization, and it starts from the top. Arison’s tweet is just another reminder of the Heat’s class.

That won’t change – even with LeBron leaving.

Not if you believe most of the sports nerds on this site. Heat fans know what they have but we’re an apathetic bunch. This stuff is supposed to be entertainment. But for the multitude of sports geeks that exist, it’s a way of life.

“It’s okay, I was about to dump her anyway, I don’t really care”

You sound like a jilted lover trying to play it off to his boys at the bar. have a few more drinks you’ll be sobbing in no time

      • finsfan71 - Jul 11, 2014 at 1:59 PM

Thanks for proving my point, sports nerd. I’m looking out the window and the sun is shining, go figure.

      • kb2408 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Exactly! I guarantee you somewhere in Miami there is a pile of LBJ jerseys smoldering. Then again, Heat “fans” never cared enough to be angry by his leaving. No wonder he went back home.

      • southbeachtalent - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:26 PM

hahahaha what a bunch of clowns. Hey finsfan these dorks actually think we would burn jersey’s over a player going back home. How utterly pathetic. Go Heat!!

      • seansull83 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:27 PM

You are looking out the window seeing the sun shine then come back to comment board to insult sports nerds. Who has the real issues here bud.

      • finsfan71 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Yeah I have a computer and some time to kill, and the sun is shining although the afternoon thunderstorms look ready to fire up. Life goes on nerd, that’s the message but apparently it bothers you that the fanbase isn’t killing itself. Do you know what else we don’t do, tear apart our city after winning/losing a championship. Have a nice day and it’ll be great to read you trolling Cavalier boards next year when they’re whipping your team.

      • seansull83 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:42 PM

Not really, after FA is over it will be about just what can Boston do. As for my regular life, once my daughter wakes up from her nap, we will go to the Seattle shoreline and enjoy the one week of sun we get. You can continue bashing people over the internet, seeing how that brings you pleasure. Have a good day yelling at nerds

    • trbowman - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:16 PM

Erik Spoelstra will get fired in two years. Guy’s useless. A bum off the street could’ve coached that trio to a few titles.

Anyway, there’s too much going on in South Beach to stay down for long. Cleveland fans are so depressive and “woe is me.” I would be too if I lived in that city.

    • 76ersdoubletank - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:50 PM

Not quite sure why you’re so mad finsfan….trollin’

  2. kb2408 - Jul 11, 2014 at 1:50 PM

He’s handling it better than jimmiejohnson, last seen sobbing hysterically while simultaneously trying to make himself feel better by taking jabs at the LAKERS on PBT.

    • bigbenh8tr - Jul 11, 2014 at 1:54 PM

Nobody cares about the Lakers. They will be irrelevant in the nba for the next 5 years

      • kb2408 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:11 PM

So will the Heat. Whether the LAKERS are irrelevant or not, no one can take away the 16 banners hanging up in the Staples. Last time I checked the only franchise with more is the Celtics.

      • sportsfan18 - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:45 PM

somebody, oh yeah it was you, said the Lakers would be back to Showtime (ya know, 58 wins and titles) soon.

        SOON you said.

The Lakers are a great franchise and props to what Dr. Buss said. But they will not be back to the Showtime Lakers level “soon”.

    • chiadam - Jul 11, 2014 at 1:58 PM

The Lakers are what warm garbage throws away.

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:23 PM

Don’t worry, he’s been trying to do the same to the Knicks, but we see through it.

  3. csbanter - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Micky Arison had no other choice but to take the high road, and good for him. The Heat have been in the NBA finals 5 times in 8 years winning 3 rings. Lebron accomplished his mission in Miami, but the time had come to go home.

  4. antistratfordian - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:08 PM

I can’t read stuff like this. I can’t watch that video of LeBron and Wade talking after they got off the plane last night either. It saddens me.

But I’m still rooting for D.Wade and Spo to shut the haters up (not too much though, can’t have the Heat going back to the Finals the year after LeBron left). I’ve become a big fan of Erik Spoelstra.

    • shaab23 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Spoelstra will get fired by 2016 (at the latest)

      • antistratfordian - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Not as long as Riley is there…

    • spursareold - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:42 PM

DWade can only play 60 games or so. If they want to even get back to the Finals, they’d better win every game he plays.

  5. jzone954 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:20 PM

Kb 24 can we make up now? lol.

  6. nickjackalson - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:22 PM

I´m discombobulated about him choosing home (&Irving;Waiters;Wiggins,Varejao,whattayahave4Love)
over signing on to lead borderline incapable role players uphill from here on out..

    ..nah..not really

miami is gonna suck donkey balls – sorry Wade

  7. djp141 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:22 PM

I imagine that it’s much easier to be gracious after LBJ delivers a couple of championships to you.

    • finsfan71 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Yes it is! He came, he conquered, he went. “Oh no, we suck again!”

  8. 00maltliquor - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:35 PM

So many thoughts and emotions going on for me right now! I’m STILL in a state of shock. Let’s see if I can recap this…

    1) WOOOOOW

    2) Are Miami fans gonna burn #6 jerseys?

    3) This probably solidifies Bosh going to HOU.

    4) What’s D Wade’s reaction!!??? He gotta be PISSED he opted out! It’s probably going to take 3.5-4 years for him to make what he could if he didn’t opt out.

    5) This opens the way for SOOOOOOO many moves to happen today!!! YEAAAH!

    7) It’s gonna be fun seeing all the Miami “fans” disappear next season in the stands AND on here.

    8) LOL @ D Wade just standing around like,

    9) Coach Spo is gonna get exSPOsed next year.

    10) New euro coach David Blatt gots the wieght of the world on his shoulders with all the expectations of taking LeBron and Co. To the promise land, developing Wiggins into the next best thing, teaching Kyrie how to be a PG/professional etc. Welcome to the NBA!

    11) LBJ, Wiggins AND Irving!!! Woooooooo weeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

    • finsfan71 - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:01 PM,0,2060506,post.poll

Hey big 00, here’s a poll from one of the local Miami papers regarding what to do with Lebron’s jersey. Only 10% say they are going to burn it. The sports geek population isn’t nearly as large as you think it is in Miami. I know we have a lot of New Yorkers but this isn’t the northeast.

      • seansull83 - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Yet a mural got defaced, a really nice piece of art that someone toiled over for 2 years. Yea but no burning jerseys that are replaceable

  9. dominwindhamnh - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:41 PM

    Not 3, not 4…

    • southbeachtalent - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:52 PM

What happened to the not 1, not 2??

  10. cantonbound13 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:43 PM

Does it make Arison the better person? Ask the thousands that were stranded on one of his garbage cruise ships what they think of him. As thousands were stranded for days out to sea and toilets overflowing, Mr. Arison was sitting court side at a Heat game laughing in a phone. & having a great time. But he didn’t write a letter, so he’s not so bad.

    • southbeachtalent - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:53 PM

O yea, that Mickey’s fault. Dummy.

  11. spursareold - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:45 PM

Oh, and Mickey? He probably wouldn’t have left if you would pay the tax the last few years and the cupboard wasn’t so bare….

    • nickjackalson - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:58 PM

      jup true that..

not everyone can spend like a Prokhorov

      • eugenesaxe1 - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Arison could spend, he chose not to.

  12. 00maltliquor - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:47 PM

What’s more surprising and shocking, when he 1st left or when he came back??

  13. jadaruler - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Didn’t Mickey get 150 mil a year TV contract out of this? I wouldn’t be mad at Lebron either.

  14. jimmy53 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:59 PM

Meh. Can’t blame a guy for going home. I can’t say I’m not surprised, especially after “the letter” and how immaturely the fans/organization handled his exit—players leave and go to other teams all the time, GET OVER IT!

I liked how Arison handled it, and the Heat fans seem to be following suit. Thus begins our rebuilding process–thanks for the titles Lebron.

  15. reesesteel23 - Jul 11, 2014 at 2:59 PM

Wade County needs 2 more rings to cover that hand. Get something done!

  16. seasickcecil - Jul 11, 2014 at 5:24 PM

I’ll say this for the last time no way Lebron goes back to Cleveland.
