Report: Thunder to sign Sebastian Telfair

Oklahoma City Thunder v Phoenix Suns Oklahoma City Thunder v Phoenix Suns

Sebastian Telfair, once a lottery pick straight out of high school, played in China last season. Prior, he played for eight teams (including two separate stints with the Timberwolves) in eight NBA seasons.

At age 29, he appeared finished in the NBA.

But not only is he returning to the league, he’s joining a contender that might offer substantial playing time.

Chris Haynes of CSN Northwest:

The free agent point guard and Oklahoma City Thunder have reached an agreement, league sources informed CSNNW.com.

According to sources that requested to remain anonymous, the terms agreed to is for one-year at the veteran’s minimum

Oklahoma City already has a starting point guard (Russell Westbrook) and a backup point guard (Reggie Jackson), but with free agent Thabo Sefolosha’s clear departure, Jackson could move regularly into the starting backcourt. He already replaced Sefolosha during the Western Conference Finals.

That would leave a backup point guard spot open with Telfair the most logical choice – as of now – to fill it.

The Thunder already have 11 players under contract, two first-round picks (Mitch McGary and Josh Heustis), a qualifying offer out to Grant Jerrett and a mid-level exception that could draw Pau Gasol.

With such a crowded roster and a limit of 15 players once the season begins, that tells me either Telfair’s contract is unguaranteed – which would mean more point guards could be on the their way to Oklahoma City – or Thunder have more moves up their sleeve.

Waiving Hasheem Thabeet, whose contract is fully unguaranteed, would be a good start. Pulling Jerrett’s qualifying offer, if he’s not smart enough to accept quickly, could be another step.

Talk about a draft bust,Hasheem Thabeet still in the freaking league,oh damn,he’s 7’3″,can never have enough bigs.

Even if you just crashed hard on the boards and played defense it’s highly valued in this league, what a waste of height.

Out of all of the players……..

I remember telfair showing me he could play a few yrs ago. I think the thunder know what they are doing if this is true and I wouldn’t doubt telfair actually making nice plays regularly.

I think the Thunder can use another big or another shooter. Telfair fits neither.

        So

I can’t believe “Hasheem the Dream” is this bad. I thought at worst he would be Mutumbo. And how is Sebastion still in the league?! I give him credit for one thing though, I think he is the only little man to go straight to the NBA out of high school and make it.

    • jcmeyer10 - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:45 AM

      The devil you know.

    • billtetley53 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:52 AM

Only you would think he’d be the next Mutumbo, “at worst”. Everyone knew he was a huge project coming in. Good Lord are you dumb!

Talifair was in China last year, says so right in the article……

Want to know how else you look dumb? Sebastian is 6’1″.

Littles that had better careers out of HS.

      6’3″ Monta Ellis
      6’1″ Lou Williams
6’1″ Brandon Jennings(1 subpar year in Italy) still pro out of HS though.

Yet another example of you making an idiot out of yourself by not doing research.

The web is at your fingertips, there is just no excuse for looking as dumb as you do.

billtetley53, you had me till you thru jennings in there. A career 39% shooter who shoots volumes of shots like he can actually shoot and can’t finish at the rim and can’t cover anyone. Him and josh smith spend the season terrorizing rims and backboards all over the country.

Who cares about this guy? Sign Gasol and stop playing.

Telfair really should have went to college. More stupidity from NYC HS students.

    • lhollis74 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:56 PM

Really!? His immediate family was piss poor while he was in high school, living in the projects. He was good enough to be a lottery pick, get guaranteed money, and while not being the greatest point guard the league has ever seen, he has been playing as a professional ever since. I’m sure he and his family live a comfortable life, so how stupid is he exactly?

  6. billtetley53 - Jul 3, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Bkbell: just meant he was better than Sebastian is all. Kim noy sating any of them are elite players. I just like pointing out kb’s stupidity on basketball. It keeps me pretty busy.

  7. billtetley53 - Jul 3, 2014 at 2:17 PM

    * Im not saying. Really sucks when you have typos calling someone else stupid.
