Lakers had a movie produced to pitch Carmelo Anthony on signing in Los Angeles

The Lakers can’t match what the Knicks can offer Carmelo Anthony from a purely financial standpoint, and they can’t match the championship-caliber roster he’d instantly become a part of should he choose to sign with the Bulls.

What L.A. can offer is the chance to play for one of the league’s most storied and glamorous franchises in the city where the power players of the entertainment industry reside.

And wisely, the Lakers reportedly leaned hard on that aspect during at least a portion of their pitch to Anthony at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo on Thursday.

From Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times:

Executives from Anschutz Entertainment Group and Time Warner Cable pitched him on the size and scope of the Los Angeles market. Movie producer Joel Silver put together a four-minute “trailer” of Anthony’s life, narrated by Tobey Maguire.

Lakers marketing guru Tim Harris quarterbacked the business side of the meeting, James Worthy also spoke, as did team governor Jeanie Buss, who expressed her desire to have Anthony join the 16-time NBA champions. …

Silver, who produced “The Matrix,” “Lethal Weapon” and “Die Hard” movies, was also in attendance Thursday and spoke about the long-running relationship between the Lakers and Hollywood.

Kobe Bryant wasn’t present at the meeting, but will sit down with Anthony later on Thursday. The two are close personal friends, and Bryant has likely been recruiting Anthony privately for quite some time.

Times are rougher than usual in Los Angeles, and with so little talent currently under contract, the Lakers are needing to rely on their market — and their Hollywood ties — in order to try to become as appealing as possible to one of the game’s marquee players.

It’s tough to see it working out, unless that relationship between Anthony and Bryant is strong enough to outweigh more logical destinations. It still feels like the Knicks or the Bulls, but only Anthony himself knows if other teams, for whatever reason, might truly have a shot.

      • adoombray - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:26 PM

Garbage like Steve Nash’s reality t.v. movies that the Lakers gave up their first round pick this year to sign and trade for

      • clevelandrox - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:51 PM

      • ranfan12 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:59 PM

How can you be so ignorant You say make movies when we have 16 championships and have half the championships in the past 15 years your crazy and stupid lakers will always be a destination for stars no matter how many haters put there lakers tradition is winning we can’t always be on top I member in 2006 when we were horrible then we went to three straight championships with gasol and won 2

      • sportsfan18 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:26 PM

Half the championships in the past 15 yrs you say?

7 and a HALF championships… I’d like to see half that championship trophy…

7 championships isn’t quite half, but I’ll give you 7 as being half of 15… just for you.

        FACT CHECK…

the Lakers have won 5 of the past 15 championships (very impressive actually but that isn’t the point as YOU said and I QUOTE you…

“have half the championships in the past 15 years”

5 out of 15 is NOT half… it’s one third, ya know 33%

      • sportsfan18 - Jul 3, 2014 at 11:28 PM

I WANT to go into business with you badly… I’m going to split HALF the profits with you.

You’ll get 5 out of every 15 dollars in profit and I’ll get the “OTHER HALF”…

      • jayhit - Jul 4, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Here’s that “We” thing again…. “You” are not part of the team “You” can barely speak and type English “member”??? I’m sure they send you a championship ring every time “They” win a championship… SAD

Laker fans show up late and leave early. Just like teams led by Carmelo and the playoffs.

Can we just banish LA from this planet, please?

  5. luz56 - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Does the movie Titanic come to mind???

    • smoothaswilkes - Jul 4, 2014 at 2:14 AM

You mean the movie that grossed 1.8 BILLION? Sounds about right.

  6. milimpilim - Jul 3, 2014 at 9:58 PM

They pitched him the Hollywood connection probably to compensate for a lower than max salary. Buss family knows what they’re doing. Don’t forget that LaLa stands to earn more this way as well.

  7. antistratfordian - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:01 PM

I’ve never heard of any of these movies working. They only make the franchise look desperate.

  8. bronx77 - Jul 3, 2014 at 10:49 PM

    That made laugh @anti. “Brons”

  9. lakerade - Jul 4, 2014 at 4:21 AM

Was Odom pissed about them super-imposing Melo on a number 7 Laker jersey?
