Toyota Center marquee in Houston shows ‘Melo wearing Rockets No. 7, which currently belongs to Jeremy Lin

Jul 2, 2014, 11:29 AM EDT

Just as the Chicago Bulls did in advance of their free agent meeting with Carmelo Anthony on Tuesday, the Houston Rockets created signage that showed Anthony in what could be his new team’s uniform.

The difference in Houston, however, was that the No. 7 jersey they had Anthony wearing just happens to belong to a player currently under contract with the Rockets.

Jeremy Lin is on the books for one more year in Houston at a little more than $8.3 million, but his deal is likely the next to go if in fact the Rockets can convince Anthony (or another high-profile free agent) to sign.

Teams tend to go out of their way not to do anything to offend the players currently on the roster. While this is a minor misstep that’s ultimately harmless, Lin probably isn’t feeling great about his place in Houston’s plans for the future.

Stop waiting your time Houston, Dallas, and L.A……..Melo is either staying in NY or going to Chicago….why would he go to the Western Conference? His wife won’t let them live in Texas it’s Chicago or NY….

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:41 AM

He’s not leaving New York, so not Chicago, either.

    • Observer157 - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:03 PM

Total slap in the face to Jeremy Lin. Total disrespect, insulting, offensive from the toxic Houston front office. FINALLY the media is catching onto the Houston marginalization of Lin, Faux propaganda spin from Houston against him. Houston is TOXIC. This GM and coach have been constantly marginalizing him for years, they were forced to sign him from the owner.
Jeremy get out of Shawshank Houston!!

Stop waisting your time Houston, Dallas, and L.A……..Melo is either staying in NY or going to Chicago….why would he go to the Western Conference? His wife won’t let them live in Texas it’s Chicago or NY….

^^^You should post this at least one more time^^^

  3. timb12 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:39 AM

Aw. So close. Maybe eventually Carmelo will stop wasting his time. After he stops waiting and waisting.

  4. Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:40 AM

They are going to come out looking bad from this. You have burned bridges with Lin, and Melo’s not signing there. Morey just doesn’t get it.

    • youngyankee - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:53 AM

from this? pretty sure the Lin-don Bridge was burned after Asik/Lin trade talks since like May…

    • eddit13 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:57 AM

Oh no, don’t anger Jeremy Lin. He may throw a tantrum on the bench.

  5. campcouch - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:55 AM

Remember that power move made by Houston to bring Linsanity and hopefully the Chinese market back to the Rockets…how quickly that fizzled. They’ve been trying to move Lin since they signed him. Even Parsons’ future rests on what happens with Anthony. I’m sure they’ll say the right thing and say it’s business, but it’s gotta burn in the back of their minds how this is going down.

    • Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Yes. And Morey is setting himself up to look bad once again. This is bad business.

  6. chiadam - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:11 PM

$8.3 million is his cap number. His salary is actually $15 million, thanks to the backloaded deals that the genius Rockets attached as poison pills to the deals for Lin and Asik.

  7. SBoy - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:14 PM

The whole name on the signage thing is a little laughable anyway… These are not impoverished starry eyed amateurs…Melo, Lebron etc., are wealthy professional superstars… You think if Brad Pitt went to Universal Studios and saw a big picture of himself on a movie poster he would be more likely to take a part? Script, money, director, co-stars… Translation to sports.. Script = does this story end with a ring… Money = Money… Director = coach… Co-stars = teammates… This is what matters. Teams can save the window dressing.

    • asimonetti88 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:17 PM

Is he going to sign because of it? No. But it also doesn’t hurt his chances of signing, so why wouldn’t you do it? People like to be pampered.

        Especially the rich and famous.

      • SBoy - Jul 2, 2014 at 1:57 PM

In no particular order… Present your best plan to win a championship, present your best financial offer, even present your city and what it has to offer the player and his family, talk about tax advantages of the state if they exist, talk about history of the franchise, and legacy, talk about the coaches strategy to bring out the best in the players game and or extending his career… after that, if you want put up a picture of the player in a jersey, invite in the circus, whatever, go ahead and knock yourself out… I do think star players getting involved in the “recruiting” process can make a difference… But even that falls behind $ and the free agents thoughts on where he is most likely to win.

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:45 PM

You’re right, I’m sure they ignored doing all of those things in favor of putting up a sign with Carmelo in a Rockets uniform. They’re hanging their hats on the Photoshop skills.

  8. jzone954 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:22 PM

Where’s LA in all of this? No more lake show? Funny thing is these fanbases boo Lebron whenever he’s in town playing them yet look at there organizations trying to get Melo like Lebron in 2010.

    • asimonetti88 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:35 PM

      Lakers meet with Carmelo tomorrow.

      • SBoy - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:21 PM

Fingers crossed the Lakers have a bigger prettier sign than Chicago or Houston.

    • kb2408 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:50 PM

And, what’s your point? Do you actually follow basketball? Everybody knows he meets with the LAKERS tomorrow. Well, everybody but jzone, that is.

  9. haaaaasoooooo - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:30 PM

There is only one way to get Melo to come to your town…..
1.) invite Melo n Lala in for a meet n greet
2.) bring in KG, blindfolded and handcuffed
3.) have the owner of the pursuing franchise punch KG in the face
4.) watch Melo n Lala applaud.
5.) Honey nut cherrios for everyone!

    • fanofthegame79 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:56 PM

I think #5 is what puts the team over the top to sign Melo, IMO.

  10. kb2408 - Jul 2, 2014 at 12:35 PM

Don’t be so disrespectful, Houston!! Why not just put Melo in a Houston jersey without a number on it?! Smh….

  11. jayrandle - Jul 2, 2014 at 1:07 PM

    That’s racist!

  12. jzone954 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Wonder what lakers pitch will be to
Him KB24. “Hey, we have no coach, and Kobe is probably gone next year, but we want you” c’mon son. The lake show is beyond old news my man.

Melo stays in New York,Its your team and your city.Have faith in Phil to get you help and there is a satisfaction to not bailing out and winning in your town.I don’t believe in chasing a team to win a championship, work hard win were you are at.If all fails you got the most money possible.

  15. wowwowbad - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:42 PM

Morey never really like Lin’s game, at first he signed him was just for later trade him for a star someday !

  16. doclolly - Jul 2, 2014 at 10:23 PM

Why would they show him in a #7 Jersey why not #15. He wanted to be 15 in NY but its already retired twice

define stupidity: show a pitcure of a player you’re recruting wearing the number of guy already on the team, so you can insult the guy on your team and show that you didn’t really look too far into the guy you’re recruiting becuse if you had you would know he prefers a different number to the one you put in the picture. dopes.
