Report: To prove he’s healthy, Derrick Rose worked out for Carmelo Anthony

Jul 2, 2014, 1:20 AM EDT

The Bulls might have three stars next season.

Or they might have none.

Joakim Noah finished fourth in MVP voting – definitely the accomplishment of a star. But the 29-year-old was never even an All-Star before 2013. A little regression, due to age and/or toward the mean, could pull him below star status.

Derrick Rose was a superstar before injuries derailed his incredibly promising career. Hopefully, nearly two full years off will have him healthy, but there’s no guarantee he has regained the explosiveness that made him so effective.

Carmelo Anthony is definitely a star, but unlike Noah and Rose, he’s not under contract with the Bulls. He’s considering signing with Chicago, though, and visited the city yesterday. His free-agent decision might be influenced by the odds Rose returns to star status.

Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders:

While at the United Center, sources say that Rose went through a private workout to show Anthony that he’s healthy and ready to compete at a high level next season.

Rose is reportedly already healthy enough to play games, and he might play for Team USA in the World Cup. Soon enough, we’ll have a clearer picture of Rose’s health.

But Melo plans to sign before then, so he needed a preview. No word on how Rose looked to him, but Chicago has insisted Rose’s health wouldn’t deter free agents.

Whether the Bulls add a star in Melo might hinge on whether they re-gain a star in Rose.

    That’s pretty dope.

My dream for how the workout and meeting went…

They had Melo watch from the top row of the highest level in the stadium…

that way he couldn’t see that the rims were set to 8 feet so D Rose looked explosive when he was throwing down…

D Rose only fell down two times during the three minute workout too… with a 75 second “halftime” in the middle of those 3 min’s…

They played “Eye of The Tiger” for Melo… to fire him up too.

Their meeting portion with Melo consisted of only ONE question and it was posed by Coach Thibs..

Hey Melo… “How do you spell “D”?

After a couple of min’s without a response, Coach Thibs asked Melo if he heard the question.

Melo said “yes coach, I’m just waiting for my multiple choice selections is all…”

I hope he goes to Chicago just so you have to start pretending you’ve always supported him.

So not only did Rose make a pitch to Melo, he worked out for him too?

Way to stand your ground Derrick. Lol.

    • sportsfan18 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:28 AM

After the workout, D Rose put on his #7 Bulls jersey with the name “LOVE” on the back…

        Hoo-hee, that’s a good one.

“Rose is reportedly already healthy enough to play games, and he might play for Team USA in the World Cup.”

The World Cup is an international soccer event. They do play basketball at the OLYMPICS, though. I know, I know, it’s confusing as all hell. Easy mistake to make.

Anyways, I hope my Warriors improve enough to reach the Super Bowl next season!

Well apparently some Warriors fans aint too bright or just havent heard about the FIBA Basketball World Cup ..
I know, i know its confusing that two events can be named World Cup, but this probably isnt the first time you’ve tried to be funny on others behalf and forgot to check the fact.. Easy mistake to make!

…yep, you pretty much nailed it. My bad!

  6. lakerade - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:33 AM

First off, this was one of the most well-written posts on this blog. Informational, set up well, and best of all, no typos! See? It’s possible!

As for Melo, I think he picks Chicago. It HAS to be about winning for him at this point, doesn’t it?

  7. undagroundnbablogspot - Jul 2, 2014 at 3:31 AM

A few days ago PBT reported that Rose didn’t want to play with Anthony. Now you’re reporting he gave Melo a personal workout. So does he want to play with him or not?

P.S. – With the way the Bulls have been playing for the past couple of years I think they may be able to win a Championship with Melo even if Rose isn’t healthy, but it sure would help to have Deng and yes, Nate Robinson back around. If they get Melo I also would not get rid of Carlos Boozer.

You do realize this isn’t MLB right? And that the NBA has a little thing called a salary cap right?

  8. timcast12 - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:52 AM

Take another shot of Yeager! shaking so nervously

  9. tfilarski - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:01 AM

Best thing for Drose right now is to play for team USA in the world cup and get some competitive basketball under his belt before the NBA season starts.

  10. smackingfools - Jul 2, 2014 at 8:58 AM

Carmelo will never win an NBA championship. Unless he’s 40 and coming off the bench.

Pleasure to meet an intelligent and knowledgeable poster on here…

      Well said sir, well said…

Especially if he goes to Daaaaaaa Bulls!

  11. jzone954 - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:21 AM

I mean if you’re Melo aren’t you seriously thinking about this? Has to be.

  12. c2poke88 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Yeah, right. A star player who’s only played about 50 games the past 3 seasons, and who isn’t sure if he wants to play for the US national team, puts on a glorified shoot-around to “prove” he’s healthy. Yeah, I’m sure THAT’LL close the deal with Melo. smdh

  14. onlyavoice - Jul 2, 2014 at 7:37 PM

    1st thought was,
yeah, he was 100% healthy last season also.
The little workout didn’t prove nothing to Melo.

D rose relied on explosive moves….you can’t do that with pieced-together kneeS
