Report: LeBron’s agent to meet with Rockets, Mavericks, Suns (not LeBron, just agent)

Jul 2, 2014, 8:45 AM EDT

LeBron James LeBron James

He has laid low and unlike people considering moving on — for example Carmelo Anthony — he has had zero contact with teams. He opted out to put pressure on the Heat organization to upgrade the roster — on owner Micky Arison to spend the money and Pat Riley to go get the talent. Riley is trying to do that, having spoken to Pau Gasol among others. Once some free agents are signed LeBron, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are expected to all re-sign in Miami.

However, LeBron’s agent is still going through the free agent motions. Just in case.

LeBron is keeping his head down and the only place he is going is to Brazil in the next couple weeks to see some World Cup action. Still, his agent may meet with a few teams, reports Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.

There could be others. The Rockets and Mavericks are not surprises on this list, those two teams are clearly big game hunting (meeting with ‘Melo as well). The Suns are a sneaky interesting team with a quality roster of role players just in need of a start to contend. Of course, all three of those teams are in the stacked Western Conference.

This is simply LeBron’s agent laying the ground work in case the Heat fail to upgrade the roster. Only then would LeBron actually meet with teams. He learned some lessons from the PR disaster that was his 2010 free agency and that starts with “don’t have teams come to meet you and kiss the ring.” If he does meet with teams it will be a much quicker, much more quiet process this time around.

But nobody around the league thinks it’s going to come to that. LeBron is going to re-sign in Miami and teams that had dreams of landing him are seeing the light. Brian Windhorst of ESPN put it this way.

        Carmelo is the WHAT??

  2. jigwig13 - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:00 AM

    Suns with him and melo

  3. floreskins - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:07 AM

Great. So the story, which you have said consistently is a non-story, remains a non-story. Glad we cleared that up.

  4. edavidberg - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:10 AM

Not sure how much help is available to Heat for $12 million per year. Not many players in the $6 million price range so more likely they are looking at one guy and a bunch of cast offs.

Give it all to Lowry and spend the MLE on a big (although there isn’t a FA big on the market worth spending that on). The lack of a rim protector can still haunt them.

  5. hwatt - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:12 AM

the story is how silly the other teams are. If I was a fan of any team mentioned in wasting any of their time and resources thinking LeBron would come save them, I’d be very concerned about competency.

  6. loungefly74 - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:25 AM

kinda sad to see he is only now going down to Brazil after America lost. huh, okay, not a big deal…whatever. anyway, James is not leaving Miami…no way it happens.

Probably has something to do with Liverpool FC. That’s the only time I’ve heard about him traveling for soccer. Liverpool has 12 players in the World Cup and there’s a good chance one of them might be hoisting the trophy.

Even the mere THOUGHT of him going to the Lakers (not happening) makes resident Kobe haters and Laker bashers squirm hahaha.

    • azarkhan - Jul 2, 2014 at 10:12 AM

      Delusional much?

      • imakcds - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:44 PM

a healthy Kobe and Melo would be dynamic, The Lakers have space to sign one max contract, and just tell me that both Melo and his wife wouldn’t love to ‘go Hollywood’.
It IS possible, and feasable, but not likely.
I would love to see it happen tho.

    • antistratfordian - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:14 PM

I wouldn’t mind seeing LeBron go to the Lakers. We’d get to see LeBron turn Kobe into a beta. There’s nothing better than that, other than perhaps LBJ winning MVP and Finals MVP with Kobe on his team. That would mean Kobe was carried for all but 2 of his rings.

  8. Mr. Wright 212 - Jul 2, 2014 at 9:56 AM

Yet you keep pounding away at the similar non-story that is Melo “considering moving on” when you know he’s not leaving New York.

    • gpatrick15 - Jul 2, 2014 at 10:45 AM

I cannot WAIT to read your reaction to his leaving, especially since you leave zero room for his possible exit. You are 100% he’s going to stay, and when he leaves you’ll be devastated. I’ll get my popcorn ready.

  9. hdsnake867 - Jul 2, 2014 at 10:05 AM

This is another non-story. Want a really great Lebron story? How about he blows out his knee in a pickup game next week? Schadenfreude! One can only wish.

    • fanofthegame79 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:13 AM

Kind of sad that you wish physical harm on a person who, literally, has done nothing to you.

      • paleihe - Jul 2, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Now you know why his name is ‘snake’.

  10. azcards - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:17 AM

Gpatrick, I agree with you. However, when he leaves, all of the media will say how obvious it was that he left. The writing was in the wall. I knew he was out of Miami from the very beginning.

  11. onbucky96 - Jul 2, 2014 at 11:27 AM

LeBron has been cast as a Sell Sword in next season of Game of Thrones…

    Ethan Strauss ‏@SherwoodStrauss Jul 1
This…is a good theory RT @12folger I guarantee you LeBron is “interviewing” to tie up cap space while Miami fills roster.

  13. irvness21 - Jul 2, 2014 at 2:14 PM

Since this and 10,000 other LeBron stories keeps popping up, lets make up a story real quick.

“Inside Sources” (we all know what this really means) say Pat Riley has had secret meeting with Carmelo Anthony and the two sides have agreed to 4yr/$40Mil deal. The plan is to resign Wade, Bosh, Haslem and Bring in Anthony and let LeBron walk. With Wade taking $12Mil/yr and Bosh taking $11/Mil the Heat will have a lot of cap space to bring in Deng.

There you have it.. throw in a few twitter screen shots and keep saying sources and we are spot on!!!

    • imakcds - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:56 PM

sounds awesome, except I can’t see Melo taking that much of a paycut, he’ll sign for twice that much. Why is Bosh taking ANOTHER paycut? Would you take consecutive paycuts to remain with the same employer? Wade, one of my all time favorite players, is done. He’ll take whatever you pay him, he should retire.

  14. imakcds - Jul 2, 2014 at 6:53 PM

soon as I found out LeBron had an opt out clause, I figured he was gone. He took a paycut , then proved he definitely deserves a max contract.
and I don’t see why the other 2 of the 3 would take another paycut either.
Wade needs to retire, it’s time, his body is failing him.
