Report: Celtics reach four-year, $32 million deal to retain guard Avery Bradley

The Celtics have locked up their “3-and-D” guy, who they are paying to be a little more than that now.

Avery Bradley and the Celtics have reached a deal, a story broken by Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald.

That was pretty much expected, although what was a surprise is the size of the contract, via Baxter Holmes of the Boston Herald.

Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports reports it is all fully guaranteed, no options.

That seems a little steep. In part because with this deal the Celtics have basically eaten up their cap room.

Bradley does some things well —he’s a very good defender, someone you can throw at quick point guards or larger two guards and he can harass them. He’s just 23 years old and took a leap last year hitting 39.5 percent from three last season.

However, he can’t create his own shot and the experiment with him running the point did not work. He’s had two shoulder surgeries. There are concerns.

A combination of Bradley and Marcus Smart (with or without Rajon Rondo) forms a very nice defensive backcourt for the Celtics. It’s something they can build on. But you have to wonder if they will come to regret $8 million a year for a role player, even a young one.
