Joel Embiid tweets ‘I’m a laker’

Jun 26, 2014, 9:22 AM EDT

Joel Embiid, Georges Niang Joel Embiid, Georges Niang

If we’re going to overreact to an innocent Instagram post from LeBron James’ wife, we can certainly at least mention a top draft prospect – yes, Joel Embiid still qualifies – naming his next team.

I actually believe Embiid here. My friends and I probably are not above slightly embarrassing each other publicly, and this type of razzing would be nothing for a group of 20-year-olds.

Also, was this tweet written by Shelly Sterling’s lawyer? Technically, with the lowercase ‘l,’ is professing just to be a fan of lakes.

Whether or not this was Embiid’s friend playing a joke or Embiid jumping the gun, this isn’t knowable information – unless the Lakers are trading up to No. 1. I still believe there’s an extremely slight chance the Cavaliers take him there. Only the Lakers trading into the top three would give them a safe chance of landing Embiid. Otherwise, they’re betting on Embiid falling to No. 7 – which I doubt would happen, though it’s easily possible.

I don’t believe there’s anything to the tweet. But if I were a Lakers fan, I’d be irrationally optimistic anyway.

Mitch saw it. Told him to delete it and was like, u blew our cover !
I feel like some teams hate to see the lakers success so much that they will throw a wrench in that plan and swipe him away or deal with a team that will take him before la does

    • 00maltliquor - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:07 AM

      That’s what I was thinking.

    • 00maltliquor - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:10 AM

      Today’s gonna be EXCITING AF!!

      • loungefly74 - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:35 AM

agree, malt. today’s draft could shift the fortunes of several teams and change the landscape. it will be exciting. i know you along with me and the usual suspects will hope the Lakers strike gold. the basketball gods have been more than kind to our franchise much more so than not…but i think we are due for another prayer to be answered!

      • money2long - Jun 26, 2014 at 4:06 PM

        Only hours away !!!!

  3. blueintown - Jun 26, 2014 at 9:36 AM

I’m sure Shelly Sterling’s lawyer is far too busy with his job as editor-in-chief to be concerned with twitter grammar.

  4. tmatic74 - Jun 26, 2014 at 9:42 AM

The Lakers and Celtics keep talking Embiid. Get a clue people!!!

    • masher1965 - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:43 PM

I have a clue, and that clue is you don’t know either

  5. kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 9:42 AM

“Many a true word is spoken in jest.” Embiid wants to be a LAKER. He obviously embraces the glorious tradition of great LAKER big men and is up to challenge of walking in their foot steps. Now, they just have to figure out a way to get him because he’s not falling to number 7.

    • blueintown - Jun 26, 2014 at 9:44 AM

Tough to walk in their footsteps when he can’t, you know, walk.

      • kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:02 AM

Embiid will be fine. MJ had the same injury to his foot. Cleveland will forever regret not taking him.

      • sportsfan18 - Jun 26, 2014 at 3:22 PM

Uh, MJ was NOT a 7 footer that weighed between 250 and 300 lbs

one article on here had info from a doctor about BIG men having this issue…

        It’s night and day…

like the Lakers under Dr. Buss and the Lakers without Dr. Buss…

    • bdachan12 - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:14 AM

If Embiid drops past Celtics then you know that medical report is bad… I mean if its a gamble even Ainge won’t take then I would run too.

  6. milimpilim - Jun 26, 2014 at 9:44 AM

We are eternally optimistic, not irrationally.

    • Professor Fate - Jun 26, 2014 at 1:21 PM

The way writers on this site characterize Lakers fans you’d think the team had been a perennial cellar-dweller (like the Clippers) instead of a few years removed from its 16th title.

      • milimpilim - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:45 PM

Thank you! Likewise, I wouldn’t count out our arch enemies the Celtics.

      • billtetley53 - Jun 26, 2014 at 4:22 PM

A few years? When they dont contend again this year it will be 5 years removed.

Being swept out in the 2nd round isnt contending.

Id get used to the losing, its going to be a full decade of it total. Look on the bright side though, youre halfway through it now.

      • kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 6:03 PM

@billbitely53…since the LAKERS last won a title only 3 teams have won titles. There are a lot of franchises that wish they could say they won a title this decade. The LAKERS can say that.

  7. aboogy123456 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:01 AM

This isn’t smart if he wanted to go to the Lakers. This just tips off teams like Orlando and Utah that his medical reports are positive.

    • 5xchamp24 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:31 AM

You don’t think Utah and Orlando would get the same report?

      • aboogy123456 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:37 AM

According to the rumors I’ve read, they are the two teams in the top 7 that Embiid’s agent has not given the report to. It sounds like his agent would want him to go to Boston or LA if not in the top 3.

  8. lphboston - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:07 AM

He’ll be off the board by 7. Boston will take him at 6 if he falls that far.

    Wiggins-Parker 1-2
Philly won’t take him at 3 after dealing with Bynum.
    Orlando-Utah 4-5 — Possible
    Boston — Definitely

    • kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:37 AM

      That’s exactly what I’m afraid of…

      • sportsfan18 - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:29 PM

        I’m afraid of that too…

I desperately WANT the Lakers to select a young big man with BOTH foot AND back problems…

Please let him fall to the Lakers…

    • sixerstrong - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:12 AM

I’m curious how you think the Sixers won’t take him, even though last year they took an injured center and rehabbed him all year. Yes the Bynum trade was a disaster, but in the long run, it’s the best thing that could have happened to our team. I can’t see Hinkie turning down such high upside unless he’s really sold on someone else (and I don’t think that’s Exum).

      • sumkat - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:44 AM

Because he knows nothing about the Sixers, and is just making things up to get the guy he wants in Boston.

They’ve clearly said they will take the guy with the most upside. They are going to take Embiid, Exum, or trading back. If they don’t pick Embiid, it won’t be because they are scared of a Bynum repeat. If that was the case, they wouldn’t of traded their best player for a guy who wasn’t going to play last year

  9. opinevain - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:07 AM

I’m clueless to whom the Lakers will pick up and I have no idea what direction the Lakers are trying to go

    • mogogo1 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Ain’t that the truth. There seems to be no plan at all. I’m wondering how long it will be before Buss the Younger either drives Kupchak off or fires him claiming he was the cause of their mess.

      • aboogy123456 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:28 AM

of course there is a plan. Just because we don’t know what Mitch is going to do, doesn’t mean that there is no plan or direction. Lakers are always secretive, and I think Mitch has earned the benefit of the doubt.

      • kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:41 AM

There is a plan. You guys act like Mitch just fell off a turnip truck. He is a proven General Manager, with a championship pedigree. It’s not important that two dudes on PBT know what the LAKERS plan is.

      • sportsfan18 - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:27 PM

Jimmy’s dusting off his Magic 8 ball… they’ll have a plan any day now for sure…

    • asimonetti88 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:44 AM

A silver lining of having no talent on the roster outside of Kobe is that they could pick any position and go any direction and it will immediately improve the team. So maybe that’s why we have no idea which direction they are going… because there’s no clear cut one we can dissect.

      • sportsfan18 - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:26 PM

So picking a YOUNG big man with foot AND back injuries is the direction to go?

PLEASE let the Lakers select Embiid…

    • sumkat - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:46 AM

Of course you are clueless who the Lakers are going to pick, they are picking 7th. Who knows what will happen ahead of them. A team picking in the top 3, or maybe even the top 5, can try to target certain player. Outside of that, you have to adjust on the fly.

It’s not like they have pieces to offer someone to trade up

  10. kb2408 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:35 AM

I see there are a lot of LAKER haters up this morning. This isn’t the first time Embiid has “suggested” he wants to become a LAKER. Other than Dwight, why wouldn’t a potential franchise big man not want to follow in the steps of:
Don’t be envious because he’s not tweeting he wants to play for your favorite team.

    • patfic5 - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:07 AM

Please take Gasol off that list ASAP.

  11. daburgh1985 - Jun 26, 2014 at 10:35 AM

Lakers need to find a way to lure Lebron or Melo. Maybe both. Or at bare minimum trade for K. Love

    • sumkat - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:05 AM

They’ll have to figure out a way to live with none of them

Nobody wants to play with Kobe

  12. sixerstrong - Jun 26, 2014 at 11:10 AM

I don’t like people playing on my phone…

    • wiltchamberlainthethird - Jun 26, 2014 at 12:11 PM

When Tweeting It Real Goes Wrong…..

  13. rogerrodgers - Jun 26, 2014 at 2:36 PM

    he’s a dummy

  14. sdlakerfan - Jun 26, 2014 at 3:44 PM

    I’m irrationally optimistic

…or maybe we should trade the pick and a couple more first rounders for a 38 yr old point guard who can’t play more than 20 games a season

…or maybe we should trade the pick and the rest of our team (all three players) for a one-year rental on a center coming off of back surgery

    omg…this is depressing

  15. 1historian - Jun 26, 2014 at 4:59 PM

FYI – I hate LA and I have the 30 year old t-shirt to prove it.

16 titles is a heck of a lot more than all the other teams out there.

    The Celts.

17 is more than 16 and so the only fans that are REALLY entitled to dump on the Lakers’ fans (in a friendly way of course) are (WE) Celtics’ fans.

May everyone have fun at the draft tonight and may the Celts take the guy at # 6 that the Lakers REALLY wanted, and may it cause heartbreak anguish unhappiness and a plethora of other goodly things to Lakers fans especially to Jack Nicholson and all the other hangers-on who go to the games to be seen.

    Have a nice day
