Report: Kings, Pistons talked Josh Smith trade, but it’s dead now

UPDATE 5:45 pm: The dream of Rudy Gay and Josh Smith competing for who could take the more ill-advised three pointer is dead.

While some talks did take place they have fallen apart, reports Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com. That’s the right move by the Kings, but it makes me a little sad.

3:48 pm: Maybe no contract is untradable, but Josh Smith’s deal should be standing right next untradable with his arm around it. Smith is owed three more years, $40.5 million fully guaranteed. Thanks again for that, Joe Dumars.

Stan Van Gundy wants to give Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe a chance side by side, and that would mean finding a new home for Smith and his contract.

Like maybe Sacramento, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

That’s some odd thinking out of Sacramento: “I want to recruit Rajon Rondo so let’s get a guy who will take touches away from DeMarcus Cousins and take more awkward threes than Rudy Gay. And he costs a lot over the long term, all the better!”

Smith can put up points, that’s not the question, he averaged 16.7 points a game last season, it’s that he took 16 shots a game to get there. It’s his shot selection that drives coaches crazy — look at his shot chart from last season. Notice 30.2 percent of his shots came from where he is a good shooter and nearly 70 percent from where he is not.

source:

That said, a lineup of Rondo, Ben McLemore, Gay, Smith and Cousins would be wildly entertaining. Potentially in a train wreck kind of way, but entertaining.

I think this trade idea is a long shot at best, but it was too good to ignore.

If you’re looking for a more sure thing Kings trade, both Stein and other league sources say Kings are shopping the No. 8 pick around.

As a Pistons fan, please let this be true!

  2. jjpt4540 - Jun 24, 2014 at 3:53 PM

McLemore would more than likely be traded for Rondo. The Celtics are not just going to trade him for a pick.

  3. lenbias34pt - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Josh Smith is the second worst kept secret in the NBA, if you want to ruin a team.
    Brandon Jennings is # 1.

The US car industry didn’t leave a mess like Dumars left in Detroit.

    • sportsfan18 - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Dumars, as bad as he was, is still second to the mess Isaiah Thomas left the Knicks with…

And Dumars DID have success early and a title…

      Where was Isaiah’s success?

And this is difficult for me to say as I’m an IU grad and loved that Isaiah led the Hoosiers to the ’81 championship…

      • lenbias34pt - Jun 24, 2014 at 6:05 PM

Certainly not arguing with how pathetic Isaiah was, not sure his mother would at this point.
But it doesn’t’ make Dumar’s handling of the Pistons over the last 7 or 8 years any less regrettable.

In short his demise started with the drafting of Darko, and he wrapped it up with the FA additions of Jennings and Smith when i have to think every other GM wouldn’t have touched either player on anything other than 1 year deals.

The Heat , Spurs, Mavs , really what ever NBA champ you want to recollect, win with team ball, taking care of the ball, hustle and defense. Four things Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith can’t grasp.
Sadly even when they think they are hustling, playing D, taking care of the ball or playing team ball they are not.
They just don’t get it, and never will.

I’ll eat my keyboard, one key at a time if the Pistons are able to trade either of these young men without taking on similar team cancers.

Good thing they’re at least “taking.” Lol.

  5. cantonb0und13 - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Why would the Kings trade for Rajon Rondo. Doesn’t Josh Smith already acts like he’s the point guard?

    • trickybastard - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:21 PM

I don’t know, because they’d get rid of Jason Thompson and play Josh Smith at the 4 where he belongs?

      • cantonb0und13 - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Josh Smith would disagree. Smith believes he’s capable playing at the 1.

  6. doctorofsmuganomics - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:22 PM

    please do, Sacramento

    • doctorofsmuganomics - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:23 PM

for the pistons, I mean. obviously

  7. onebigredrocket - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:22 PM

The Kings involved in trade talks. Go figure!

  8. skins26portis - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:31 PM

Josh Smith for JT I would do that trade in a heart beat. As a Kings I don’t want Rondo he is head case and damage goods. Not giving up Ben Mac who is improving and is young for a broke down old Rondo

  9. 00maltliquor - Jun 24, 2014 at 4:54 PM

Yes Sacramento, pile on all the most temperamental talent the league has to offer! Please do that! Lol.

  10. seansull83 - Jun 24, 2014 at 5:07 PM

Why would we give up Rondo right now. We have until trade deadline before we really need to think about it, and if we become a playoff contender by some miracle he wouldn’t want to leave.

  11. illegalblues - Jun 24, 2014 at 5:10 PM

josh smith playing power forward isn’t a bad player. borderline all-star when he forced inside the perimeter. josh smith handling small forward duties is an awful player and unbearable to watch as a fan.

  12. bostonfrogs - Jun 24, 2014 at 5:13 PM

Oh, Joe D…you probably deserve to be ripped royally, but I just can’t do it after watching your “Bad Boys” segment on 30 for 30. You were a tremendous player, and your GM legacy is almost exactly like Jack McCloskey’s–initial brilliance in rebuilding from next to nothing, savvy trades to win a title, and then immediately follow up with head-scratching moves (and even though Josh Smith is a far worse pickup than anyone McCloskey ever signed, including Orlando Woolridge, at least you never left Rick Mahorn unprotected in an expansion draft).

  13. edbrowndesign - Jun 24, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Wow! Josh Smith to Sac, just what they need another chucker. Only the Kings could make this deal

  15. bealwithit - Jun 24, 2014 at 6:22 PM

That team would be hilarious. They wouldn’t be able to buy a jump shot.

  16. kb2408 - Jun 24, 2014 at 6:53 PM

SVG wants to keep Monroe, Smith has to go elsewhere or to the bench. I would prefer the later..

  17. irvfin3 - Jun 24, 2014 at 7:02 PM

Please Boston keep Rondo I don’t want him to go to a crappy team like Sacramento.

  18. weaselpuppy - Jun 24, 2014 at 7:40 PM

Get the entire cast of Baywatch to give this deal CPR….that would be awesome NBA TV to have JSmoove with the Kings!

Really, we Piston fans would take Derrick Williams and a Maloof toupee.

Ok, just the toupee…but that’s our best offer!
