Celtics talking trade with Cavaliers for No. 1 pick

If the Cavaliers were publicizing their indecision for the No. 1 pick to draw trade offers – and I think they were – it’s working.

The Magic reportedly made a strong offer of No. 4, No. 12 and Arron Afflalo.

The Celtics want to trade up, too.

A. Sherrod Blakely CSN Northeast:

A league source has told CSNNE.com that the Celtics have engaged the Cleveland Cavaliers about acquiring the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.

multiple sources indicate Boston would lean more towards Wiggins than Parker.

The Celtics have the Nos. 6 and 17 picks, which obviously hold less value than No. 4 and 12. Aside from Rajon Rondo, Boston has no player with as much value as Afflalo.

So, unless they’re wiling to trade Rondo for No. 1, the Celtics probably can’t trump Orlando’s offer. Maybe adding multiple future first rounders would help – Boston has plenty from the Nets and Clippers – but I still doubt it’s enough.

There’s no harm trying, but Danny Ainge is probably better off hoping Joel Embiid falls to No. 6.

Rondo? But don’t the Cavs already have an expensive point guard who gets hurt every year?

    • stephenolszewski - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Hey Kyrie’s still on his rookie deal so he’s not expensive…..yet

      • getlow81 - Jun 25, 2014 at 12:58 AM

        Until next year..

    • AZ Dem - Jun 25, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Kyrie and the first pick to BOS. Rondo and the Celts lottery pick to CLE.

Or the first to BOS, Rondo to CLE. Then CLE sends Kyrie to PHI for one of their lottery picks.

Never going to happen. This is just make believe GMing. I don’t for a second think that Ainge wants to move up in the draft. He may want other teams to think he is, but I don’t see it. Ainge’s forte is picking up steals in the 10-20th pick range.

This just in: the Tune Squad offers their first round pick, Porky Pig and Bill Murray for Cleveland’s No. 1 overall pick.

  3. balsagna - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:06 PM

Yes, that’s what they want! A similar point guard that can’t shoot. Come on…

    • tjr324 - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:11 PM

how exactly is Rondo a “similar point guard” to Irving?

      • sportsfan18 - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:52 PM

neither of them are as good as they think they are…

see, they are similar that way…

    • TRO - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:15 PM

Yes dummy though the Cavs don’t need a point guard in no way is Rondo anywhere close to being similar to Kyrie Irving who is quite the three point shooter. Know a little bit before you post.

      • balsagna - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:21 PM

They are both point guards that like to have the ball in their hands no? In that they are similar. We do not need a point guard. Certainly not enough to be a sweetener for the #1 pick in the draft. Oh yea, not to mention Rondo can’t shoot.

      • badge3832 - Jun 25, 2014 at 8:57 AM

All point guards like to have the ball in their hands. Rondo and Kyree are not similar at all. Regardless, the Cavs don’t need Rondo.

  4. j0esixpack - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:14 PM

If you’re Ainge you want to make clear that you have numerous options with as many #1 draft picks as he has (though this one is a bit of a stretch) – even if it’s just to push back on Flip Saunders posturing about keeping Kevin Love.

  5. campcouch - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:15 PM

I’m sure the Cavs didn’t call a reporter and say “we can’t decide” and they don’t update Twitter everytime an offer is made. CSNE is one of the most homer sites in sports media. They wouldn’t use that pick to draft anyone, they’d swing it for a Kevin Love trade.

    • sportsfan18 - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:56 PM

yeah, they didn’t need to call the reporter as he was in their “brain trust” with them…

otherwise there wouldn’t have been a brain there…

Now I can’t wait for this draft to be over.

  7. floreskins - Jun 25, 2014 at 7:03 AM

Absurd. On to the next rumor.

  8. sixerstrong - Jun 25, 2014 at 7:49 AM

No way they turn down Afflalo, the 12th and the 4th. None.

  9. zukny1 - Jun 25, 2014 at 8:44 AM

starting to sound more and more like it will come down to this:
Sixers trade: 3rd, 10th & Thad Young to Cavs for the 1st overall pick.

    Sixers select – Wiggins,
    Milwaukee – Parker
Cavs – Embiid or PF option

    • sumkat - Jun 25, 2014 at 10:48 AM

I think Philly sits on 3 and tries to trade down before they give up 3, 10 and Young. Just because someone else is wiling to overpay, doesn’t mean you overpay even more

      • zukny1 - Jun 25, 2014 at 11:02 AM

In all honesty, i’m probably one of few that agree with you. For someone to agree, they have to be open to taking: Exum or Embiid at #3 in the draft. Like many, I love the possibility of “Twin Towers” but 2 injuries w/ this young of a career is very scary.

I am one of few that is extremely high on Exum and I believe him and MCW could Co-Exist in Philly. If i’m standing pat at 3, I’d take Exum.

Then w/ 10 I would either try to move up a few spots and take a risk on Embiid or one of the top Power Forward options.

Why people are hard core on Wiggins? because next year we are going to suck again and could then grab another very talented player in the draft. Wiggins does hold Super Star talent. Oh tough decisions! Can’t wait till thursday.

  10. bigwii - Jun 25, 2014 at 10:06 AM

The 6th, 17th, Green or Avery Bradley and maybe future 1st round picks for the 1st and a bad contract and if they want to get rid of him Bennett.

    • jbink2585 - Jun 25, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Not going to happen if the cavs didnt pull trigger on that magic offer then, they surely know that they are leary there player wont get to four. Cavs want embid parker or wiggy and they know they will not fall past 3 either one. Cavs will either stay at 1 and take there guy or trade with sixers or bucks.
