Cavaliers receive tempting trade offer from Magic for No. 1 pick

Jun 24, 2014, 7:40 PM EDT

Cleveland Cavaliers v Orlando Magic Cleveland Cavaliers v Orlando Magic

Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker?

The Cavaliers don’t know which player to choose No. 1, though I think they’d be getting a quality asset either way.

But Cleveland’s options, though narrowed to those two prospects, aren’t so simple. Orlando’s trade offer might be even better than previously reported.

Jeff Goodman and Chad Ford of ESPN:

the Cavs do have some interest in the Magic’s offer of Arron Afflalo, the No. 4 pick and the No. 12 pick.

That’s an intriguing offer.

With the No. 4 pick, the Cavaliers would guarantee one of themselves Wiggins, Parker, Joel Embiid or Dante Exum. In essence, it’s really Embiid or Exum. The Magic, like Cleveland, would certainly take Wiggins or Parker with the No. 1 pick. The Bucks would take the other at No. 2.

No. 12 could land a quality piece too. It’s high enough where a highly rated player – Nik Stauskas? Garry Harris? – could be available. James Young wouldn’t be a bad fallback option.

Afflalo is an increasingly capable scorer with strong defensive skills. He’s an upgrade over Dion Waiters, though for the small-forward-starved Cavs, Afflalo and Waiters could combine to make an undersized wing combination.

This really comes down to how the Cavaliers rate Wiggins/Parker and Embiid/Exum. Unless Cleveland sees a huge drop between those groups, the Magic’s offer is definitely good enough to make the Cavs consider it.

Just a guess..but if the Cavs received 4 and 12 I don’t think they would pick two rookies..I’m guessing would package it with Dion (who Arron would replace) for a veteran player..

  2. cantonb0und13 - Jun 24, 2014 at 7:48 PM

I rather draft Wiggins or Parker still. If Cavs accept the deal, expect them to continue to be mediocre in the future.

    • ranfan12 - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:58 PM

      and more 1st picks lol

    • masher1965 - Jun 25, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Why ?? Unless Wiggins or Parker are heads and shoulders better than Embid and Exom , the trade does make sense. They still get one of the top 4 players of the draft , ( which there isn’t a big drop off between ) plus a good starter plus an additional pick . The only way they say no is that either Wiggins or Parker is , in their eyes, so far above everyone else that they are worth at least 2 starters .

  3. antistratfordian - Jun 24, 2014 at 7:53 PM

That is some offer. But Cleveland didn’t see this kind of bid last year for a reason. I’d still keep the pick and take Wiggins.

    • bougin89 - Jun 25, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Agreed. Cleveland can’t mess up this pick or trade it. They need to take Wiggins or Parker. I prefer Wiggins too.

    • masher1965 - Jun 25, 2014 at 4:46 PM

To me, this is exactly the trade to take for the reason you stated. The Cavs would get 2 starters and the 12th pick which they can either trade of get a possible bench player. They are in the lottery, it is hard to imagine they are one player away.

      • antistratfordian - Jun 25, 2014 at 5:09 PM

If someone is willing to give you that much for what you have, you have to take a closer look at what you have. The other guy thinks he’s getting the better deal.

There is the potential that no amount of picks plus Afflalo would make up for what you would lose by trading away the top selection.

  4. motobus - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:03 PM

That injury to Embiid really affected the 76ers pick.

  5. 00maltliquor - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:05 PM

I’d still take Wiggins, but that’s one helluva tempting offer.

  6. bparmalee - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:06 PM

Everybody seems so sure that Wiggins is a legit star but he went stretches without dominating in college. The Cavs can not have another draft bust. I hope they make this deal or the Jazz’s offer. If Favor was in this draft where he be slotted…3rd? If you can get Favors, Burks..the 5th pick and possibly more it beats drafting a guy that disappeared at times for Kansas (lets not forget the track record of Kansas pros).

    • jrob23 - Jun 24, 2014 at 10:28 PM

He has the talent to take over games on both ends and he showed that towards the end of the season (showed it all season defensively) when Embid got injured. But initially I think he didn’t want to alienate his teammates and he put team first.

      • louderthanwords1 - Jun 25, 2014 at 12:59 PM

In addition to what jrob23 said it seems to me at least that you overvalue Favors. Favors is a good player but he’s not on a rookie deal and doesn’t come cheap after signing an extension for 4 yr 49 million. He’s also been in the league 4 yrs and although he’s improved every yr it’s easier to gauge his ceiling now and it appears lower than most predictions for Wiggins, Parker, Exum and Embiid. I’ll agree that none of the 4 rookies are a sure thing to work out but when the options are really just draft a potential superstar or get a few solid players and be a middle of the road playoff team I’d rather take the risk and draft one of the top 4.

Yeah you’re right Paul Pierce had a terrible career.

  7. sumkat - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Yesterday was the #5 pick with an offer

Today is the #4 pick with an offer

I’m sure tomorrow is going to be the article detailing the Sixers offer

  8. muathjam21 - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:10 PM

Just take Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins and be done with it. No need to get cute.

  9. kb2408 - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:36 PM

Man, this is a no-brainer. Jabari has made it known he doesn’t want to go to the Cavs, so that limits their options by one…unless they’re going to draft him anyway. That leaves Wiggins. I’d do the trade, draft Exum at 4 and the best player left at 12. Afflalo can be their starting small forward. Exum has the potential to be the best player in this draft according to some. If they can get him at 4 PLUS another 1st rd pick PLUS Afflalo how can they turn that down?

    • fanofthegame79 - Jun 24, 2014 at 8:44 PM

I agree. You get a good, starting pro in Afflalo and the opportunity to add a very good draft pick at #4 and still have the #12 to package in a trade or take the best off the board. You could even take Embiid at 4 and there wouldn’t be any backlash…or as much backlash, anyway.

      • zukny1 - Jun 24, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Except if the Sixers don’t get Wiggins, they are surely going after Exum. So Cavs would have to take: Vonleh, Embiid, or whoever else they rate high left at 4.

      • fanofthegame79 - Jun 25, 2014 at 1:10 AM

If they take Embiid, there won’t be the backlash of “wasting” the #1 pick on him.

    • sumkat - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:06 PM

I wouldn’t count on getting Exum at 4. There have been a few guys on the radio dropping the idea that the Sixers, if the can’t get Wiggins or Parker, have targeted Exum, But they don’t think Exum and MCW can play together with neither being a very good shooter. The talk is, if Exum is there they will take him, and flip MCW for a pick on the back end of the top 10 (The Kings and Lakers were the teams mentioned, specifically). They would then use the pick they acquire for Smart or a 4, and the 10 pick on a 4 (if they took Smart) or a shooter (if they took a 4)

  10. saint1997 - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:01 PM

Magic would be dumb to offer that much

    • sumkat - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:08 PM

It does seem a little odd to me. If there was one team you would think would be thrilled that they could pick up Embiid, even if they had to wait a year for him, it was Orlando. After all, they’ve only been contenders twice in their existence, both times built around a center (Shaq/Howard). You would think they would jump at the chance to get possibly the first franchise center since….Howard or Yao?

      • jrob23 - Jun 24, 2014 at 10:30 PM

your forgot about Kelly O. baby

      • saint1997 - Jun 25, 2014 at 2:47 AM

Yeah that is true. That said Vucevic is the most underrated centre/player in the league and I think with Tobias Harris (playing at either 3/4) and Oladipo (playing at 1/2) you’d think they’d just draft a guard and a forward with those picks and trade Afflalo for some promising young depth/another pick. That makes more sense than trading for Wiggins or Parker

  11. haaaaasoooooo - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:22 PM

How is this not a good deal for the cavs? Is Milwaukee on speed dial if Cleveland turns this down?

  12. lastdukestreetking - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:37 PM

@haaaaaaoooooo – if Orl made this offer to Cle then there is clearly only one guy they want. Orl would not make this offer to Mil unless their guy is still available after Cle makes its pick.

    • gmsalpha - Jun 24, 2014 at 11:50 PM

I agree. Most people are torn between Wiggins and Parker, but it seems the Magic are set on one or the other and don’t want to settle at #2 for the one that is left, taking the chance their guy is off the board.

  13. haaaaasoooooo - Jun 24, 2014 at 9:44 PM

So your telling me there’s a chance!

    • sportsfan18 - Jun 25, 2014 at 1:13 AM

yep there IS now a much greater chance they F up their draft than they were already going to otherwise…

they can’t keep up with more than one moving part…

  14. getlow81 - Jun 24, 2014 at 10:32 PM

I love Afflalo…but you don’t give up the number one overall pick in a deal for him. Period. He’s is gonna be 29, when in turn you could draft a 20 year old phenom athlete in Wiggins or a 20 year old scorer Carmelo-type in Parker.

    • getlow81 - Jun 25, 2014 at 12:55 AM

      Also, autocorrect hates me.

    BREAKING NEWS…

The Factory of Sadness has a new and interesting chapter folks…

Some in the Cavs front office thought they had finalized a trade with the Orlando Magic…

But the Owl they used to send the paperwork through got lost out over the lake and well, sadly… the paperwork is gone… (yeah, the owl is too, get over it).

Since the paperwork did not go through, the Cavs STILL had the first pick but they sat on their thumbs while the commish was waiting for them to submit their pick.

Time ran out on the Cavs and they forfeited their first pick of the draft…

Only in the Factory of Sadness folks…

    Unbelievable…

Uh, WAIT folks… we have ANOTHER breaking story…

Yes, your on the phone with us Lebron… go on, we can hear you.

Lebron to reporter and everyone as phone was on so we could hear him on TV.

Lebron says I WAS going to go to the Cavs if they selected Wiggins…

But since they figured out a way to F up their 1st pick again this year, well see ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya..

  16. ravenswhat - Jun 25, 2014 at 7:21 AM

This is a no brainer trade for the Cavs.

  17. masher1965 - Jun 25, 2014 at 4:54 PM

If this is true,, the Cavs need to take this. Afflalo is a solid player, they are going to get one of the top 4 players regardless plus an additional pick at 12. That means 2 starters plus what they can make at 12 for the 1st pick , who can only play 1 position. I know everyone thinks the top 2 guys are going to be awesome , but one player isn’t going to make the Cavs a winner, ( remember LeBron ??) When you can get 2 VERY GOOD starters ( and maybe one being better than that ) plus an additional pick at 12, what is there to think about, you do it
