LeBron’s wife’s innocent Instagram post causes silly Internet stir

Jun 23, 2014, 5:58 PM EDT

Savannah James is learning the hard way that when her husband is a free agent anything and everything — regardless of intent — gets blown out of proportion.

Every summer LeBron and Savannah and their children go back to Akron, Ohio, to LeBron’s home there. It’s where they spend part of their time, and like anyone who gets to go home/go on vacation, Savannah was excited.

So, she posted the above on Instagram with the caption: “Home sweet home!! The countdown is real! #330”

However, LeBron can (and very well may) opt out of his contract with the Heat this summer. There are still fans in Cleveland (and some around the nation) under the delusional belief that LeBron is going to return to the Cavaliers when he does to play next to Kyrie Irving. And they saw Savannah’s post and took it as LeBron making his decision.

Nope. Starting with ESPN and then just about every source that knows LeBron and family shot down the rumor. By the way, LeBron has not enrolled his children in a Cleveland area school, either.

LeBron has some decisions to make, he will this week sit down with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Pat Riley and they all need to decide what they are going to do moving forward.

While some teams around the league are planning just in case, nobody I’ve spoken to really expects LeBron James is going to leave Miami. Certainly not for Cleveland.

I’ll put it this way — if you were in LeBron’s shoes who would you trust more: Dan Gilbert to build a winning organization or Pat Riley to recruit more players to come to Miami?

    Exactly right Kurt…

    Not. Gonna. Happen.

Not after the letter Mr. Gilbert wrote about Lebron when he left in 2010.

The words he used and the things he said about Lebron and his actions were unbecoming of an owner of a NBA franchise.

We, in this country tend to forget things quickly…

However, had our employer written those words about US and made them public when we left for a new place of employment, WE would NOT have forgotten about it.

You could not be more right Kurt when you said that it is not going to happen.

Reading comments like these is humorous.

  2. eugenesaxe1 - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:07 PM

What exactly did she think people would think about that? She either wanted to make a scene, or she’s just dumb. And one would think his wife wouldn’t need any more attention, sooo…

    • azarkhan - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:17 PM

Like the article says, she’s just posting about going on vacation. She’s not dumb, the people who made a big deal about it are dumb.

      • eugenesaxe1 - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:28 PM

She said nothing about vacation. +
She posted a map of Ohio. +
She spoke of “home sweet home” (does she not live in Miami?). =
Dumb, stirring the pot, or attention-whoaring. Take your pick.

      • chicitybulls - Jun 23, 2014 at 7:00 PM

@ eugene – she may live in miami but that doesn’t mean she considers that home. I live in the dallas area (have been for over 10 years) but Chicago will always be home to me. When I go on vacation to go back every year I dont say I’m going on vacation. I say “I’m going home” (which I will be doing a week from Thursday). And I say the exact same thing. I’m counting down the days til I get to leave and go home.

  6. greatmiamisportsmind - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Godfather Riley has a plan for this summer, and he get what he wants.

  7. theblackrook - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Uh, because she’s a damn individual and not everything she does is tied to the man she pucking. Women are not our objects or extensions of ourselves or accessories. Here’s a clue, she ain’t always thinking about how this or that will be taken by the media in reference to her husband because she believes herself to be an individual and probably isn’t going to accept that all of you idiots take any action she takes as a Lebron indicator and not the actions and intentions of his wife as a person.

    • mcmystery76 - Jun 23, 2014 at 8:05 PM

If she’s not taking into consideration how her actions will be perceived in the sports world, then she’s as ignorant as you are. Her husband is one of the biggest stars on the planet and has been since he was a teenager; she should know by now.

      • gofinsgoheatfloria - Jun 24, 2014 at 7:25 AM

Good for Savannah for sharing some fun with the great majority of the sports world who know that the James family has remained connected to Akron and would “get” the Instagram in that context. Sorry for everyone else.

  8. remyje - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:39 PM

if she didn’t say “the countdown is real” i could see why you would defend her… he probably won’t go back to cleveland but you’re trying too hard to defend lebron, as usual

    • miamatt - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:45 PM

countdown = time until her baby is born this summer

      • remyje - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:49 PM

i can see why you desperately don’t want him to leave… did your name used to be clematt?

      • jkirby317 - Jun 23, 2014 at 11:42 PM

        In Akron?

      • miamatt - Jun 25, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Let me break it down for y’all. Of course I don’t want LeBron to leave, but if he does it was an amazing four year thrill-ride I’ll always cherish. I make my bias obvious with my @handle so folks can take a grain of salt where applicable.

But here’s the truth: they go to Akron every summer, even while living in Miami for most of the year. Mrs. James expects to give birth this summer, so she’s got even more reason than usual to be excited to be around family. Yes, that will happen in Akron. If you want to make it more than that, have at it. But I find it extremely hard to believe that Mrs. James just dropped LBJ’s plans on instatweetbook, or whatever it is.

  10. antistratfordian - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Poor choice of words if it was unintentional. But I do believe it was intentional – she’s just having some fun.

  11. cranespy - Jun 23, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Pat pays Lebron….gets Bosh to take a cut and sells DWade on going home to Chicago to finish his career as a 13 minute gun slinger. The $avings means a shot at Lance and Melo……..alas… won’t be enough…..the Heats best days are behind them and Lebron who agrees only to a 2 year contact…..opts out in 16……watch out for the Celtics.

He’s dressed like a waiter because he’s servin’ up so much excitement for the fans.

  13. sportsnut101 - Jun 23, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Why do we care what she says
is she the 4 time mvp or 2 time champ

  14. bknowledge - Jun 23, 2014 at 8:10 PM

If Lebron says, “It was a mistake to leave; I’m going home and I’m gonna try and bring a championship to Cleveland,” NBA fans around the country will love him. And, the Cavs could have a great team.
    Derrick Favors
    Spencer Hawes
    Lebron James
    Dante Exum
    Kyrie Irving
with Noah Vonleh, Tristan, Waiters, Bennett, Jarrett Jack on the bench….

    • miamatt - Jun 25, 2014 at 11:49 AM

sorry, that team still kinda sucks.

  15. ljl2 - Jun 23, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Cleveland fans aren’t the ones constantly writing articles here or on ESPN that discuss Cleveland and LeBron. Yup, we are the ones who haven’t moved on.

Somebody actually married this goon and had kids with him? Amazing.

  18. jadaruler - Jun 23, 2014 at 9:19 PM

I shook my head because its been known for a while the James family goes back to Akron every summer. Fan is short for fanatic for a reason.

  19. campcouch - Jun 23, 2014 at 9:35 PM

People are shocked that a person likes Ohio. Since most folks have never lived or visited and base their opinions on sports teams, they’d be very surprised at the area if they ever took a chance to drop in. Forgive her for being excited to visit her family and friends. Forget that James is still very active in his hometown community. That doesn’t matter because they moved to a place with a beach,so their pasts should be wiped out. Let the lady go see her grandma in peace.

Vacation and Akron, Ohio ha ha ha…..

  21. thegloriousone - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:33 PM

As a Clevelander, I’d like to say that I don’t know one person who thinks LeBron is coming back. In my estimation, he will stay in Miami. He has two rings there. He can’t just bail via free agency. He’s the franchise.
It may be interesting for talk radio hosts in Cleveland to throw this stuff around. It may be interesting for the national pundits to speculate. But Clevelanders are not anxiously awaiting the return of LeBron James.

    • jeffkx - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:38 PM

I’m a Clevelander and think it’s very unlikely but possible. But to say you don’t know one Clevelander who thinks he is coming back is beyond comical..turn on sport talk in Cleveland..come on man..

      • thegloriousone - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:50 PM

I don’t know one person who thinks LeBron is coming back. Do you know why? Because the people I know are rational and, well, LeBron isn’t coming back.
Like I said, it may be great fodder for sports talk show hosts to throw this out there. And there may be a handful of deluded folks who bite. But Clevelanders, the vast, vast majority of Clevelanders, are not anxiously awaiting the return of LeBron.

        Thanks captain hindsight

  22. cthulhu78 - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:20 AM

It’s funny reading these articles on July 31st. Writers were so smug in their insistence that LeBron was going back to Miami. I wonder, has Kurt Helin written an admission that he was wrong or has he continued to wallow in his own wrong sense of self satisfaction?

    • Kurt Helin - Jul 31, 2014 at 1:31 PM

I was not wrong about this Instagram, they were on their way back to Akron like they did every summer.

Since there is a lot of this crap in the comments around this I will say this once: My sources and most people around the league thought LeBron would return, especially during the season. Miami’s people thought he would return right up to the very end. I reported that, it turned out to be wrong. I was wrong in my predictions. I’m okay with that. See, you come here in part because you get opinions and context with the news. Sometimes opinions change as new information comes to light. That’s called being a thinking human being, I am flexible and not rigid in my thinking. Some of you should try that. I couldn’t personally really care less where LeBron wants to play basketball, I hope this decision makes him happy. I enjoy watching him play because he plays a beautiful brand of the game. He did that in Cleveland and even more so in Miami. I will enjoy watching Cleveland play in the coming years.

But when part of your job is to give opinions and make predictions on things, sometimes you turn out to be wrong. It happens. Doesn’t bother or change me.

      • titansbro - Aug 19, 2014 at 2:01 PM

it clearly bothered you or you wouldn’t have taken the time to respond to the crazies in the comment section. lol
