Report: Bulls’ Derrick Rose prefers Kevin Love to Carmelo Anthony

Jun 22, 2014, 12:30 PM EDT

It seems more and more likely that the Bulls will be heavily in the mix to add a superstar talent via trade or free agency this summer.

Carmelo Anthony may be highest on their list, given that Chicago can sign him outright once he opts out of the final year of his Knicks contract to become an unrestricted free agent. But Kevin Love is probably not too far behind, even though the Bulls would need to acquire him via trade, which could prove tricky if they want to keep the key pieces already in place.

Derrick Rose is expected to be 100 percent to start next season, and his presence is one of many factors which make the Bulls such a desirable destination. And he reportedly has a preference in which superstar he’d like to see added to his team’s roster.

From Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News:

According to sources close to Kevin Love, Rose’s preference is for the Bulls to work out a deal as soon as possible for Minnesota’s All-Star forward because he sees Love as more of a team player than Anthony. Chicago is in the mix with Golden State for Love, with Boston and Denver considered long shots. If it makes any difference to Melo, Rose has no plans to recruit Love, who is free next summer, either. But the Bulls already know whom he’d really prefer to play with in the future.

Every player in the league would have a preference if asked who they’d like to play alongside with. It doesn’t mean, however, that they wouldn’t welcome the opportunity to play with a whole host of talented, proven stars.

The Bulls won’t be consulting Rose on any of their roster moves this summer, and will do what makes the most sense to set the team up for long-term success. If that means clearing the cap space necessary to sign Anthony outright — leaving the team’s core intact so it could immediately contend for a title — something tells me that Rose wouldn’t have an issue with that decision.

What up kb24. How you been?

  2. metalhead65 - Jun 22, 2014 at 6:17 PM

well maybe unlike the experts on here and wolves fans he knows a guy who gives you a double double every night would be a good addition to a team that has championship aspirations.

    • chicitybulls - Jun 22, 2014 at 8:34 PM

Oh you mean like Noah does?

      • metalhead65 - Jun 22, 2014 at 9:50 PM

so your saying have more than 1 guy on the team who does it or can do it is a bad thing? not a bulls fan but they would be hard to beat with a lineup like that.

      • chicitybulls - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:44 AM

No, it doesn’t. But I also think Taj is capable of double doubles as well and plays much better defense.

I don’t really know the interest here for KLove and Carmelo. Derrick Rose’s Injuries is like walking on thin ice in terms of having an opportunity to win it all.You better do it immediately or the sooner the better. If I was Carmelo(& even KLove) I would go somewhere else like Houston or somewhere where thei stars are much more durable than Rose. Everything just hinges on Rose’s being healthy….and sadly, really ….that is such an unreliable thing now.

So you’d rather go to a team that plays little to no defense in a much tougher conference and with a player that’s disappeared in the playoffs? And you wouldn’t want to play with the DPOY which also happened to be second in triple doubles this year? Gotcha.

“So you’d rather go to a team that plays little to no defense…”
Actually the Rockets were top 10 in the NBA in defense most of the season. They only dropped during the time Beverley and Howard were both out during the final month of the season.

“with a player that’s disappeared in the playoffs?”
Harden had a disappointing playoff showing this year (he still managed 27ppg, 6 ast, 2 stl) but was spectacular last season and was crucial to OKC’s run to the Finals 3 seasons ago (lest we forget how he destroyed L.A. and S.A. that year.)

        “in a much tougher conference….”
I agree the West is tougher than the East, but to win he will eventually have beat the West anyway.

      • chicitybulls - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:48 AM

You would have to beat the west to win a championship, however you would only have to beat 1 team playing in the east as opposed to 3 in the west. You make good points however about the defense and Harden.

To The Knicks fans: Why Melo is in Chicago with Lala today

    • csbanter - Jun 22, 2014 at 8:47 PM

Wish I were in Chicago with Lala.

He should prefer good health as pray he gets either or

  6. vanhenge1234 - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:56 AM

I’d say it’s fairly irresponsible to release this as a ‘report’. CBSsports posted the story as ‘rumors’ and noted the source. Not saying don’t post it, just add some context as to the veracity of the quote given that it originated from Love’s camp via the ny daily news. The original article even does a better job.

The melo/love debate is fine, but call it what it is: pure speculation. Don’t link it to Rose directly.

  7. nikedunks13 - Jun 23, 2014 at 1:37 AM

And I bet the Bulls wish they had never signed him to that contract. At this point I don’t think it really matters what Rose prefers.

  8. unxpexted1 - Jun 23, 2014 at 11:59 AM

I think Taj is more valuable to the Bulls than Kevin Love is.

    • chitownmatt - Jun 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Taj was one of the most improved players in the league last year.
If he continues to improve this year, it would be very close.

I would rather have both of them…

      • nikedunks13 - Jun 23, 2014 at 10:24 PM

Taj would be included in a trade for Love

  9. steveng84 - Jun 23, 2014 at 8:51 PM

D rose needs to shut the hell up…he can’t even stay healthy…all he is, is the next penny hardaway
A couple of great years, then fall off the map….bulls need carmelo scoring…
