LeBron James back to the Cavaliers? Don Draper pitches it

Jun 19, 2014, 6:45 PM EDT

If anyone can make the case LeBron James should sign with the Cavaliers, it’s Dan Gilbert Don Draper – a fictional “Mad Men” character who is probably more realistic than the Cavaliers’ hopes of luring back LeBron.

As I watched the pitch, though, I thought we might need to up the odds on LeBron’s for going to Cleveland. But the longer Don spoke, the more I realized he made a critical mistake.

Too many photos included LeBron’s underwhelming Cavaliers teammates.

Nostalgia for that? Hardly.

If Lebron wants to be around underachieving overrated teammates he can just stay in Miami.

  2. antistratfordian - Jun 19, 2014 at 6:59 PM

The last slide should’ve been the picture of Pavlovic hugging LeBron after he hit that buzzer beater against Orlando.

But I liked this. It was like something I would’ve tried to make… if I watched Mad Men.

LeBron is more respected for dragging the Cavs to the finals than for anything he did as just another in a long line of hired guns in Miami. Shaq, Derek Anderson, Shandon Anderson, Doleac, Gary Payton, James Posey, Jason Williams and Antoine Walker were the 2006 versions of LeBron, Bosh, Ray Allen, Chris Anderson, Mike Miller, Shane Battier, Tony Douglas, Rashard Lewis, and James Jones. The only constants have been Wade, Morning, and Haslem. This is just the way Micky Arison does business – grabs a bunch of high-priced (and low-priced) hired guns and tries to win a title. And he has never shown loyalty to anyone but Morning and Wade. LeBron will never really belong in Miami.

      • antistratfordian - Jun 19, 2014 at 10:22 PM

Well that really depends. He is certainly respected for what he did in 2007, but if he stays in Miami and takes them to 5, 6, 7 finals and 3, 4, 5 rings… then he will obviously belong in Miami in a way that no other Heat player in history ever has, not even Wade.

Practically the entire front office and coaching staff has been there for 19+ years. If you had truly bothered to look closely, you’d recognize that the organizational structure is as stable as any other.

Riley likes to build with proven veterans, and so what? Did I miss the part where the draft was the only viable means to build a team?

Tim Hardaway is still a part of the Heat organization. So is longtime role player Keith Askins. Juwan Howard retired and joined the coaching staff.

Your comment really isn’t grounded in any version of reality that I’m familiar with. But that’s okay. You’ve got an axe to grind. We all get it.

      • miamboy - Jun 20, 2014 at 1:49 PM

oh really?didn’t Alonso morning go to the nets for a year? And then come back and get a ring?

    • davidly - Jun 20, 2014 at 1:10 AM

My compliments on the correct employment of a relative clause on a sports’ blog. That’s a rare thing.

  3. 88heatnation - Jun 19, 2014 at 7:19 PM

If the Cavs are serious about acquiring Lebron make an enticing trade for that #1 pick + waiters, thompson at a shot for Love which will leave then leave them with a big three, (all reliable scorers) then fill in the roster with complimentary devensive minded role players to hide the holes on that end and veterans for an experienced lineup , Lebron will definitely elevate Irving’s game and have a better more ideal stretch 4 in Love who rebounds like a monster, I believe Sefolosha a free agent, sign him to the mid-level with all the cap space round out the rest of the roster with quality rotational players, make sense before proposal. Its just like asking a girl to marry you without a ring.

LeBron going back to Cleveland is about as likely as bb53 meeting me in L.A. for the beat down he’s been promising me for the last year. Actually, Cleveland has a chance to get LeBron, albeit a slight one. There is absolutely NO chance of bb53 showing up to throw down with me!! He knows it, and so do I.

    • billtetley53 - Jun 19, 2014 at 7:53 PM

Are you that stupid to try and turn this around now? Dont answer, its a rhetorical question.
Ive offered enough times and you run like a coward everytime. Its just as well, youd agree to meet me somwhere and not follow through. Kinda like the bet you made to leave this site when the Lakers didnt make the WCF after getting Dwight.

Its fairly simple to find you, if I really wanted to. I just enjoyed watching you act like the coward you are. You are so transparent. Your litle ploys are so obvious. Not everyone is as simple as you though, so they see right through it?.

In a sense, you are right, it wont happen. But, not because of me, because of your cs ways.

I visit my brother twice a year, if you ever grow a set, let me know.

        Go to bed, old man.

    • antistratfordian - Jun 19, 2014 at 9:36 PM

You are tempting fate. People are just getting crazier and crazier. You might wake up one day with bb53 hovering over you with an evil grin on his face and end up as a curious piece in the New York Daily News.

I’ve had death threats. I don’t mess around with that. That’s why I never talk about where I live or any other specific detail about myself.

      • kb2408 - Jun 19, 2014 at 11:59 PM

Isn’t it eerie how that old fool always pops up right after I post a comment? And yesterday he was “quoting” things I said months ago!! Dude is a psycho stalker. He’s been cyber stalking me for over a year now.

      • antistratfordian - Jun 20, 2014 at 12:15 AM

Hey man, I know exactly what you’re talking about.

      • reesesteel23 - Jun 20, 2014 at 9:20 AM

If you 2 have issues being stalked, you’re on the internet way too much.

      • billtetley53 - Jun 20, 2014 at 9:34 AM

Well, well. Are the mirror images of each other forming a bond?

Anti: As usual, you have an over inflated opinion of yourself and your importance in peoples lives. You havent received any death threats, not that I have read on here anyway. People are busting your chops because of your delusional ramblings.

As far as kb? You know this little girl likes to whine that im “stalking” him. I can go weeks w/o commenting, or commenting to him. When I do that, he comments and says something about me. Its pretty pathetic. Its lije he gets some kind of perverse pleasure in getting verbally smacked around. Im pretty sure he just craves attention. Positive or negative, it just doesnt matter. Im fairly certain this is the extent of his social life.

You are both 2 peas in a pod, and canton also.

KB doesnt have to worry about me showing up at his house. I just wanted to show what a coward he was, and I did. This site is for me to kill time and blow off steam, I dont care enough or get angry to search out anyone online. Its enough that I help him make a fool of himself.

The thing of it is, if he would just quit poking the bear, he wouldnt have any issues with me.
He cannot help himself though. Case and point, just lok at this thread. His first comment mentions me. Why? Then he claims Im stalking him.

I should pity him, but hes just so annoying. Its much the same reason you get as much greif as you do.

KB, I quote things you say days and months and sometimes a year ago just to prove your ignorance. You say som pretty outlandish, stupid and misinformed things. Your lack of knowledge coupled with your misplaced superiorty is deserving of ridicule.
That youve resorted to crying and AGAIN looking for allies is comical. Why cant you just ignore me and walk away? Why must you continue to bring me up?

Just so you know, if you continue typing stupid crap, im going to continue to reply to you. Thats what this site is about. You cant handle it and opposing viewpoints, then quit commenting.

      • loungefly74 - Jun 20, 2014 at 12:46 PM

so…KB, Anti, and Bill walk into a bar….

eh…guys, we are talking about sports. there should never be a reason to throw threats of any kind at anyone. yeah, sometimes the banter can get heated but in the end, we are all just fans of the game. it would be boring if we all thought the same thing. if Anti wants to praise King James, let it be. same with Bill on KG, and KB with Kobe. fine. I know i talk trash and “poke the bear” so to speak (especially with anti and bill), but its all in the perspective of a fan having fun. so please, no more threats of violence. all you guys are better than that.

      • antistratfordian - Jun 20, 2014 at 8:11 PM

@billtetley53 – You’re being played. kb2408 has you all perturbed. The best thing for you to do would be to ignore him. That’s sound advice.

      • antistratfordian - Jun 20, 2014 at 8:13 PM

@billtetley53 – And the threats I have received have come in private messages. I don’t think anyone would threaten somebody like that publicly.

As for my opinion of myself – well, you’re the one who knows about me. The first time I became aware of you was yesterday.

  5. balsagna - Jun 19, 2014 at 7:30 PM

The way I see it there are two options for Lebron: stay in Miami or go back home to Cleveland. Either of those story lines can be spun in a positive light. Either choice will improve his public image, which honestly should already be sky high (hate him for whatever but he is a stand up individual and positive role model). If he goes anywhere else he looks like a title chaser looking for his next super team to shack up with. That’s how I see it at least.

  6. chargerdillon - Jun 19, 2014 at 7:53 PM

This Laker fan dreams of James in purple and gold. ANYTHING IS POSSSSSIIIIIBLLLLLLE!!!!!

    • southbeachtalent - Jun 20, 2014 at 2:40 PM

If he leaves Miami that would be cool. Anywhere but the stinkin New Yawk Knicks!!

  7. thesixersbench - Jun 19, 2014 at 8:02 PM

    Really well done.

  8. fordmandalay - Jun 19, 2014 at 8:16 PM

    Girls, girls….you’re BOTH pretty!

  9. haaaaasoooooo - Jun 19, 2014 at 9:43 PM

Lebron could make this a non-issue by release a simple statement, such as “I’m staying with the Heat.” Or if he goes back home, a “I’m returning to Cleveland.” He could come out looking good in this situation. The sooner, the better.

    • mazblast - Jun 20, 2014 at 2:56 AM

But then he’d get far less attention, which IMO he wants less than future championships but more than the money. He’s been the center of attention his whole life and lives for it.

  10. campcouch - Jun 19, 2014 at 11:02 PM

I imagine ten guys who wake up each day in Cleveland Metro and call sports bloggers, reporters, shows and writers around the US with stories. Stories about how the fans are waiting with puppy dog eyes and pray for LeBron’s return. The other 2 million folks are pretty much show up if you want,it’ll be nice to see you again, but if not we’re going to get Polish Boys and corned beef sandwiches. This is a sports town that has experienced pretty much the worst and most ridiculous things that could happen in one geographical area. I’m sure they’d welcome him back,he’s not as hated as the corpse of Art Modell, but at the same time they’ll accept him staying gone as well. Yep,ESPN found the group of 50 drunks burning his jersey and laid it on all fans. Everybody else keeps showing up at the games. 17,000 out of a 20k seat arena isn’t bad for a struggling team, but yeah it’d be nice to fill in the remainder.

  11. davidly - Jun 20, 2014 at 1:16 AM

That scene worked the first time I saw it. But like all teevee commercials once they’re placed in an actual promotional context, its essence is exposed for what it really is: the shameless co-option of the creative mind for the purposes of vacuous bottom-line promotion in the interest of a very few at the expense of many.

  12. jeffkx - Jun 20, 2014 at 9:12 AM

The only thing better would have been to replace the two guys at the end with Riley and Coach Spoelstra..

  13. southbeachtalent - Jun 20, 2014 at 9:18 AM

As a Miami fan I’m grateful for how he has taken this franchise to the top, enjoyed every minute of it. If he leaves, he leaves. Wont burn his jersey, or even get upset. To quote Cowherd “Love your family, like your team”.

    Till next Lebron article..

      well said, sir.

  14. mlp420 - Jun 20, 2014 at 6:28 PM

I don’t know if Lebron having better talent in Miami holds weight anymore. Lebron + Kyrie Irving + Wiggins or Parker seems more formidable than Lebron/Bosh/Wade to me.
