Lance Stephenson admits trash talking LeBron James may not have been wisest choice

Regrets? Lance Stephenson has a few.

Monday Stephenson said he had no regrets about saying the day before LeBron Jamestrash talking was a “sign of weakness.” LeBron responded to those comments with a smirk and his best game of the playoffs as the Heat thrashed the Pacers in Game 4. Stephenson said his no regrets line after that loss.

Wednesday at shootaround before Game 5, Stephenson was singing a different tune, reports the Indy Star.

“I think I said some things that shouldn’t have been said…” Stephenson said. “Also Paul (George). We just gotta play basketball and stop worrying about all the other stuff.”

Paul George (and David West, but more subtly) complained about the officiating after Game 4, George being deluded enough to say the Pacers outplayed the Heat in a game where the Pacers trailed by 23 at one point. The league came down on George with a $25,000 fine.

Coach Frank Vogel has talked about getting his team to focus on the things they can control, not the things they cannot.

That will be a great lesson for next season’s Pacers team, because this year’s version lost focus the second half of the regular season and that carried over to an uneven performance in the playoffs (albeit one that led to the Eastern Conference Finals).

Miami has had an uneven focus in the playoffs, too, but they didn’t let it pull them apart on the court. They are going to a fourth straight NBA Finals in part because of that. Keeping your focus under a bigger spotlight and not pointing fingers when things go wrong matters.

When you said “ya think Lance”…

    No, he does not think…

I don’t know what happened to them. They were dominant at one point and excelled at what Miami was weak with. Total collapse. To see how ppl say they lack leadership must really get to Bird being that he traded there leader for a guy that doesn’t play, may as well have kept him and maybe it would be different. Bird failed them, Vogel is failing to be the coach they need, the team throws players under the bus, it’s ugly . I’m intrigued to see what there excuses will be this offseason and how they will beat us next year.

File this one under the NO S**T Category Lance….DUH!!!! He is only the Best in the World!!!!

Hibbert probably gave him an ultimatum. “Either shut up or I’ll punish your wife in the low post.”

    • bougin89 - May 28, 2014 at 5:22 PM

He’d try to punish her in the low post, but would only succeed maybe 2 times out of 6 or 7 attempts.

    Wheels are falling off.. STILL.

Vogel might’ve gotten their attention back on the game but a quick run by Miami, and they’re ready to crumble. 10-0 run turns into a 30pt blowout. See ya next year!

Below the belt finsfan! Literally and figuratively.

  6. haaaaasoooooo - May 28, 2014 at 5:10 PM

And how is this HELPING Stephensons free agency?

    • biggestkahunaburger - May 28, 2014 at 5:13 PM

$$ wise, not good. But he’s got game.. fringe All Star potential if he’s on a team with some veteran leaders and a strong/established coach. Would do well in Miami, SA, Dallas, LAC. His boneheaded mistakes and over-dribbling can be cleaned up.

  7. buffalowned - May 28, 2014 at 5:12 PM

When has Miami had an uneven focus? When they almost let Brooklyn win game 5? They’ve looked pretty damn focused to me and their chemistry is at an all time high.

    • biggestkahunaburger - May 28, 2014 at 5:15 PM

He must’ve meant during the regular season, cause this postseason they’ve been dialed in.

  8. moppop - May 28, 2014 at 5:22 PM

To be fair Lance was responding to a reporter’s question…albeit in a juicy face-palm-worthy way.

  9. beach305 - May 28, 2014 at 5:23 PM

I think we are going to hear a lot of stuff that hasn’t come out about this team over the summer if any of the big names are traded.

    • moppop - May 28, 2014 at 5:48 PM

We’ve heard some of it through TMZ..mostly revolving around PG sleeping with Hibbert’s part-time girl. It seems to be the source as apparently the Turner-Stephenson fight came from the two camps of pro-PG or pro-Hibber.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Lance tried something that had worked for him in the past. I’m sure his grandkids will get a laugh when they ask him about his experiences of playing against LBJ and this Heat team of three, maybe four HOFers.

  11. ravenswhat - May 28, 2014 at 5:42 PM

He still couldn’t resist throwing Paul into the statement. Unfreakingbelievable!! Own it and move on dummy!!

  12. jzone954 - May 28, 2014 at 6:25 PM

Nothing wrong with trash talking, but like Lebron did it to you, do it to him, don’t play this stupid game of trash talking him through the media….but the Pacers have been trying to do these thing through the media for 3 years now. Started with Vogel year one , then came the tough guy who got traded to the clippers go tried to fight Lebron and Wade , and now this. Please. Just stop already.

  13. jzone954 - May 28, 2014 at 6:32 PM

    This* who*

For all of his foibles, I might be a budding Lance Stephenson fan. I don’t really mind the over-confidence and naiveté… at least we know he isn’t afraid (well, he might be now…). But I like a guard who plays bigger than they are – like D.Wade with his blocks – and Lance can rebound as well or better than most forwards. I’m always partial to triple double ability as well. So, sure, while against the Heat he’s a “bad guy”, but when this series is over… no hard feelings.

In fact, I think I have new found respect for all of the Pacers. Maybe. We’ll see…

  15. sjtorpitt - May 28, 2014 at 6:56 PM

Exacty what I was thinking. He can’t own up to his own stupidity.
