Paul George officially diagnosed with concussion, status for Game 3 uncertain

May 21, 2014, 2:56 PM EDT

The second Paul George said after Game 2 that he “blacked out” briefly after Dwyane Wade kneed him in the back of the head as the two scrambled for a loose ball, you knew this was coming.

George has been diagnosed with a concussion, the Pacers have announced. That makes his status for Game 3 uncertain — he will have to go through the league’s concussion protocol and be cleared to play not only by the Pacers’ doctor but also the league’s neurologist.

The Pacers say that after the play George “exhibited no symptoms of a concussion” and denied feeling dizzy or feeling nauseous, or any of the other signs of a concussion. That is why he was allowed to continue playing in what became a Miami win to even the series (the league said there will be no punishment as the team followed the league procedure).

After George said post game he had blacked out, more tests were run. Here is what the Pacers said in their press release:

He has been dialed by the team’s consulting neurologist with a concussion, based on his post-game reported that he had briefly lost consciousness during the game.

That means before he can be cleared to play he has to pass a series of mental tests after increasing levels of physical exertion (the findings are compared to a baseline taken before the season).

The Pacers and Heat are off until Saturday, when Game 3 takes place in Miami. The extra time off means it is more likely George could be cleared to play (compared to if the teams played Thursday, for example) but it depends on his recovery.

George struggled to score 14 points on 16 shots in Game 2 Tuesday, but over the course of the playoffs he has averaged 21.5 points per game on a True Shooting Percentage of .570.

Without George and on the road in Miami picking up a win would be difficult for the Pacers, who would miss George’s perimeter defense on one end and shot creation on the other.

Hahaha should’ve paid Georgey after the season he lost his focus, young buck with Millions. (You be the judge).

      Huh, What?

      • antistratfordian - May 21, 2014 at 3:33 PM

He’s saying the Pacers should’ve waited until after this season to extend George, instead of doing it before training camp.

      • chicagosports2014 - May 21, 2014 at 5:33 PM

Loosing up then you just may understand, nerd

      • 12444uggg - May 21, 2014 at 5:36 PM

“Loosing”. I’ve been called a cornball and nerd today by barley literate posters here. What the hell am I doing with my time? Pacers in 7. I’ll pop back in when the series is over. Cornball nerd out.

      • duhwighthoward - May 21, 2014 at 6:25 PM

He’s saying somehow the Pacers should have foreseen him getting kneed in the head.

Maybe he’s bitter about Derrick Rose getting maxed out, then breaking down.

Pacers choked again with a healthy team

      • jkirby317 - May 21, 2014 at 8:14 PM

Healthy? This article is about a concussion PG got in this game. Does that make him healthy?
Does that make the team healthy? A David West messed up his eye. But if that is healthy to you–see a doctor.

    • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 6:03 PM

Considering PG didn’t hit all of the performance incentives this year, he cost himself millions already.

They both are extremely talented without the extra BS. The dirty play just ruins their game for me.

    • cantonbound13 - May 21, 2014 at 4:45 PM

You know it brother. When the Heat feel vulnerable, Dirty Wade does what he does best. Ask Rondo.

      • finsfan71 - May 21, 2014 at 6:05 PM

Wade is the team enforcer? Sheesh, I keep hearing how you NY’ers are such knowledgable fans but I’m still waiting to hear something intelligent. Probably asking alot, I know.

      • leahcima1 - May 21, 2014 at 6:09 PM

Finsfan71 using “intelligence” in the same post as cantonjerk0 is like using Knicks in the same post as “win”, – laughable.

This fool, cantonjerk0, sucked you in like he sucks in others. He has to find something that will get people to look at him and somewhere along the line he found that if he attacked Lebron that he’d get attention. Cantonjerk0 knows less about basketball than anyone whoever wrote on this blog, but more about anyone about drawing attention to himself. He’s a loser who can’t stand himself so he hides behind his own stupidity. I actually feel sorry for him. Can you imagine living in his skin and having to look in the mirror and face what a jerk you are?

    • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 6:01 PM

It wasn’t dirty it was a scrum which ended in PG feeling woozy. At most Wade would be guilty of a loose ball foul.

      • jkirby317 - May 21, 2014 at 7:30 PM

        Everything WADE does is dirty

      • ProBasketballPundit - May 21, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Pro: can’t believe you stooped to that level. You’re just like me! Yet I want to ignore the cretin scumbag haters. It’s just a matter of time.

    • Kansachusetts - May 22, 2014 at 8:05 AM

Wade reached over and grabbed him to pull him down, there’s a foul – never called. Then both of his feet or legs hit George’s head in succession. Not sure why they didn’t even look at that for the possibility of a flagrant. Wade is a dirty player, period.

      • jkirby317 - May 22, 2014 at 9:28 AM

      • doctordunkenstein - May 22, 2014 at 11:35 AM

LOL…a flagrant foul, really? I bet LBJ gets smacked in the head way worse than that and u claim hes flopping don’t u?

  5. johnc44 - May 21, 2014 at 3:10 PM

If Paul George doesn`t play game 3 the Heat fans are really going to be upset with the officials after game 4 because the NBA is going to get at least 6 games out of this series no matter what.If you can`t make money betting on the NBA then you just aren`t paying attention.

    • doctordunkenstein - May 22, 2014 at 11:36 AM

pacers will get some help from the refs to win another game or 2 in this series, you can count on it.

      • bball242322 - May 22, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Its going to Game 7 like last year. U Miami trolls are hilarious!! you guys were saying the same stuff last year with the Pacers. “Oh the Heat are gonna sweep em” – weren’t even close

  6. sdelmonte - May 21, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Even with the rather fortuitous extra days off, I can’t imagine he will be ready to play well by Saturday. Crying shame, really, but the playoffs are about who’s left standing sometimes.

    • ProBasketballPundit - May 21, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Very true. Both NFL and NBA seems more like a war of attrition some seasons. And history doesn’t really feel sorry for teams with injuries; just part of the game.

  7. floridascuba1 - May 21, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Pacers did NOT follow protocol. Side line is not a quiet environment.

“If a player is suspected of having a concussion, or exhibits the signs or symptoms of concussion, they will be removed from participation and undergo evaluation by the medical staff in a quiet, distraction-free environment conducive to conducting a neurological evaluation.”

    • sdelmonte - May 21, 2014 at 4:56 PM

Agreed. It’s shameful and if the league doesn’t fine the Pacers, it only shows what a farce the concussion rules are.

      • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 5:37 PM

        Fine them for what, exactly?

The quote hinges on ‘conducive to conducting a neurological evaluation’. Precedent in the NBA has already established that the sidelines in-game fits those conditions.

    • savvybynature - May 21, 2014 at 5:19 PM

But was he suspected of having a concussion, or exhibiting signs of one?
He told the team he had no nausea, no vision problems, didn’t mention blacking out. How are they supposed to know if he is lying to them because he wants to keep playing?

      • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 5:47 PM

Medically, there’s additional tests you can perform to measure his stress and ability to perform beyond questions. Questions are only the first line. He can lie all he wants, but since he said he blacked out, he will have to go through additional batteries.

    • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 5:58 PM

      Context. Context always gets you.

Is the sideline quiet? Certainly not.

Is it quiet enough to conduct a neurological evaluation? NBA precedent says yes.

      So, let’s rephrase, shall we?
“The Pacers did NOT follow floridascuba1’s interpretation of protocol.”

      • floridascuba1 - May 21, 2014 at 8:43 PM

You can try to spin it all you want. But sidelines of ECF is far from quiet and distraction free. And if you want to use NBA precedent, they set a huge one with the Stirling issue. But will it be followed if something similar happens with a player, I doubt it. So your NBA precedent is flawed.

      • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 9:08 PM

I’m not sure I understand the relation to Sterling vs the handling of concussions in the NBA historically with the current protocol. Care to fill in the logic gap? You do understand the meaning and context of precedent, right?

10 players experienced diagnosed concussions this season. All of them were initially evaluated on the sidelines. Countless others were also evaluated on the sidelines and then determined that they were not showing any outward signs of a concussion. Thus, establishing precedent to the determination of what is quiet enough to perform ‘neurological evaluation’, which seems to be the issue you determine is not valid. This chain of events was again ratified by certified neurological doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, who just happens to be the chief NBA expert on neuroscience.

Does floridasuba1 know more about neuroscience than a doctor?

Inconsequential of your opinion. It isn’t your decision. Perhaps you should apply to the NBA to take over Dr. Kutcher’s job? You can name me as a reference.

Wade’s knee just GRAZED his head — that was not a full-on hit. Sounds more like George is trying to get Wade suspended in some form. That George guy is so arrogant — can’t stand him.

    • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 6:23 PM

Attempting to get Wade suspending by putting himself in jeopardy for playing game 3? How on Earth could you think that logic is remotely correct?

      Are you Wade’s mama?

    • bball242322 - May 22, 2014 at 4:49 PM

This has got to be the stupidest comment on this whole site. He got drilled in the back of the head, then his head bounced forward and hit the court. Just watch the replay, it’s so easy to see – not sure why any1 would make this stupid of a comment. PG is not arrogant, he’s actually highly respected around the whole league, including your boy LBJ. No1 here can stand you

  12. jkirby317 - May 21, 2014 at 7:52 PM

How often in Basketball do we see flagrant fouls for grazing a players dome with a hand while trying to block a shot. How many times to players get kicked in the head and get nothing?
If Lance Stevenson did that to LeBron he would have went to jail.

    • moppop - May 21, 2014 at 8:06 PM

You can control where your hand goes. Simply due to physics, you cannot always control your legs, particularly when falling. Wade may have done unspoken damage to his knee in the process; or at least it certainly doesn’t help Wade’s situation. ‘Hey guys, I’m going to use an injury-prone portion of my body as a weapon!” Come on now. At least be logical.

      • jkirby317 - May 21, 2014 at 8:10 PM

You can’t control your legs? Really? How does he run? Jump?
if it was just a “graze” how could he have unspoken injuries?
        Wade is dirty.

  13. breesus09 - May 21, 2014 at 10:32 PM

This kind of sounds like when LeBron had that “elbow injury” against the celtics during his last season with the cavs. I’m sure if he doesn’t perform the rest of the series it’s bc of his “concussion”. The doctors have to list it as a concussion bc he suddenly got those symptoms post game. I’m not saying he’s faking but it sounds a little questionable to me
