We passed along a report earlier that the Nets may consider trading Deron Williams, and those feelings, at least to some extent, appear to be mutual.

Williams might need more ankle surgery this offseason, and is as frustrated as anyone that he hasn’t been able to live up to that monster contract that still has three years and $63 million remaining. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he wants to explore a lesser role somewhere else.

From Devin Kharpertian of The Brooklyn Game:

A high-level Brooklyn Nets official told The Brooklyn Game that a report that Deron Williams wanted out of Brooklyn “came out of left field” and that Williams has not requested a trade, but acknowledged that Williams has struggled with the burden of expectation since joining the Nets.

“He’s frustrated,” the source told The Brooklyn Game. “He’s not happy with himself. He’s not up to his standards in the three years since we got him.” …

The original report from HoopsCritic alleged a falling-out between Williams and Nets management, particularly Nets general manager Billy King.

This is what happens when highly-paid superstars underproduce, and when teams that spend exorbitant amounts of money on payroll to assemble world-class talent fail to exceed expectations.

The Nets went about as far as could have been expected with this year’s roster, losing to the defending champion Heat after failing to execute in late-game situations, while enduring the wrath of the game’s best player in LeBron James.

The offseason will be tricky in Brooklyn — Kevin Garnett might retire, Paul Pierce may leave in free agency, and Shaun Livingston is likely to have better offers to play somewhere else. But Williams will probably be back, and the frustration that both he and the team might be feeling right now will dissipate over the summer.
