Report: Kevin McHale to return as Rockets coach

Well, that was fast.

Less than 24 hours after the Rockets were eliminated from the postseason in heartbreaking fashion, the team has decided to pick up the option on head coach Kevin McHale’s contract for next season.

From Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:

Kevin McHale will return as the Rockets coach for next season, a person with knowledge of the decision said today.

McHale just completed the final guaranteed season of his contract, but multiple individuals with knowledge of the Rockets thinking have said management believes in him and wants him to have more time with a relatively new team that spent the season battling injuries.

The fourth year of McHale’s contract was subject to a team option but it appears the Rockets are sticking with him.

As we discussed in breaking down what’s next for the Rockets, you don’t blow out a competent head coach like McHale unless you have a rock solid option in mind to take his place.

The playoff loss to the Blazers wasn’t on McHale; Portland presented matchup problems that the Rockets were ill-equipped to deal with from a personnel standpoint, and that more than anything was the reason for Houston’s disappointingly quick and somewhat unexpected exit.

Hey Rockets, good thing you outbid the Knicks for Jeremy Lin.

      But I forgot we still have R. Felton… #BeingAKnicksFanIsHard

Being a follower & bandwagon jumper must be easier, loser.

      • cantonb0und13 - May 3, 2014 at 10:30 PM

That awkward moment when I called myself a loser. #whatislife?

      • cantonb0und13 - May 3, 2014 at 10:35 PM

The Knicks also have J.R. Smith……………..

Jeremy Lin had guarded Lillard to 0 4th quarter points until the dumb McHale benching. Parsons torched again on defense. Harden choked in the 4th again no defense and more loser iso at the end. Hope this means Lin gets to leave Shawshank Houston, McHale fired, Harden exposed, David Hardisty out of the closet.

James Harden epic choke job in the playoffs:
        Game 1- 8-28
        Game 2- 6-19
        Game 3- 13-35
        Game 4- 9-21
        Game 5- 5-15
        Game 6 – 9-15
Plus WORST DEFENSE in the league all series and zero leadership.

Raymond Felton is the starting PG for the Knicks…………

    • rohlo - May 3, 2014 at 10:58 PM

how did the knicks do in the playoffs this year??? oh wait!!!

    • casualcommenter - May 4, 2014 at 2:32 AM

      Don’t be so humble.

The Knicks traded multiple draft picks for Andrea Bargnani, signed the injury prone Amare Stoudamire to a huge multiyear deal, and gave two horribly inconsistent players (Raymond Felton and JR Smith) long term deals.

Nobody beats the Knicks when it comes to personnel incompetence. Nobody. That’s something you can brag about as a Knicks fan as you guys once again finish outside of the playoffs in the horrible Eastern Conference next year.

  2. luz56 - May 3, 2014 at 10:36 PM

But Phil is there to make the needed changes… Bad deals and Isaiah Thomas set the team back years.. Dolan if he lets Phil run things should turn it really around in two years

    • cantonb0und13 - May 3, 2014 at 10:41 PM

Isiah had Zach Randolph and David Lee now look at them. The Knicks are simply cursed. Knowing the Knicks they will trade Hardaway and A. Stoudemire for Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith. There goes the cap space for 2015.

You’re an idiot, get a life & your own identity, coward.

I’m cool with McHale staying, but he needs to do something about Harden quickly.

    Are you *$#%##@@ kidding me!

  5. grantgoodman93 - May 4, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Woooooooow. This guy can’t coach a half court offense to save his life. It’s either Harden ISO and have j
shoot 30 shots a game or feed Dwight. They were grossly disfunctional offensively in that Portland series

  6. ocgunslinger - May 4, 2014 at 4:13 PM

You cannot blame Kevin McHale for the first round loss. He has a center who is more interested in having fun than working hard and a guard that can’t guard. A lot more work needs to be done before the Rockets become more than what they are now. I wish Kevin well.

    • jollyjoker2 - May 4, 2014 at 7:53 PM

yea, hes’ a fun guy to listen to.. I don’t know how his coaching ability is overall. Jason Kidd won his first round with less. just sayn.
