Adam Silver: ‘I’m not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling’

Apr 26, 2014, 9:35 PM EDT

Adam Silver declined to address potential sanctions against Donald Sterling, but NBA commissioner pledged to act quickly. The notable portions of Silver’s news conference in Memphis tonight:

  • “The audio recording posted by TMZ is truly offensive and disturbing, and we intended to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible.”
  • “I personally think the situation is most unfair to the Clippers’ players and coaches who have to deal with this distraction in the middle of their own highly competitive playoff series.” Silver said he spoke to Doc Rivers and Chris Paul earlier today to share those sentiments.
  • “All members of the NBA family should be afforded due process and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy, which is why I’m not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling. We will, however, move extraordinary quickly in our investigation.”
  • Sterling has agreed he will not attend Game 4 at Golden State tomorrow, Silver said.
  • Asked whether previous allegations against Sterling would play a part in his decision, Silver said, “It hasn’t so far. We’re very focused on the audio tape.”
  • “The core of the investigation is understanding whether the tape is authentic … and understanding the context.”
  • “We do hope to have this wrapped up in the next few days.”
