Adam Silver: ‘I’m not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling’

Apr 26, 2014, 9:35 PM EST

Adam Silver declined to address potential sanctions against Donald Sterling, but NBA commissioner pledged to act quickly. The notable portions of Silver’s news conference in Memphis tonight:

  • “The audio recording posted by TMZ is truly offensive and disturbing, and we intended to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible.”
  • “I personally think the situation is most unfair to the Clippers’ players and coaches who have to deal with this distraction in the middle of their own highly competitive playoff series.” Silver said he spoke to Doc Rivers and Chris Paul earlier today to share those sentiments.
  • “All members of the NBA family should be afforded due process and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy, which is why I’m not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling. We will, however, move extraordinary quickly in our investigation.”
  • Sterling has agreed he will not attend Game 4 at Golden State tomorrow, Silver said.
  • Asked whether previous allegations against Sterling would play a part in his decision, Silver said, “It hasn’t so far. We’re very focused on the audio tape.”
  • “The core of the investigation is understanding whether the tape is authentic … and understanding the context.”
  • “We do hope to have this wrapped up in the next few days.”

So his girlfriend is allowed to sleep with black people, but not be seen at the game with them?

    • genericcommenter - Apr 26, 2014 at 10:09 PM

I think there’s some kind of porn niche for that. Or so I’ve heard.

    • beagle11 - Apr 26, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Apparently she’s allowed to sleep with a guy with HIV!!

“…and understanding the context”. So, is there a context that makes the comments okay?

If the tape is authentic the league should force the sale of the team.

  4. davidly - Apr 26, 2014 at 10:11 PM

What is clear is that it is okay with the league vis a vis “its image” as well as 29 other owners and thousands of season ticket holders and fans if you’re a slumlord racist billionaire and equal employment offender. But idiotic, hypocritical, bigot sugar daddy — not so much.

      “Nice”.

Sterling owns a decent team for the first time ever and still finds a way to gum up the works.

Does anyone have a problem with someones private conversation being taped?

    • cmehustle - Apr 27, 2014 at 9:58 AM

I do. And Im a black guy, which really shouldnt mean anything. But yea I have a big problem with it. Unfortunately for Sterling that toothpaste aint going back in that tube…

    • 24thesho - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:11 PM

I think their conversation should have been kept private, and I’m a black man. On the other hand, if you’re 70-75 year old billionaire who sleeps with women that he knows would not even give him directions to McDonalds if he were just some old guy on the street asking, then, he should be smart enough to know that having your conversation taped is always a possibility; especially if has shared his most personal, racist opinions with this woman on a daily basis. I’m sure she just got tired of listening to him offend her and everyone who looks like or is as dark as she is, especially after having slept with his disgusting old behind. I think she just snapped and took advantage of the most perfect of opportunities.

The biggest irony in this is that Sterling is concerned about “public perception”.

  9. 6stn - Apr 27, 2014 at 6:41 AM

    It’s Sterling Silver!

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:04 PM

      More like feces.

  10. jollyjoker2 - Apr 27, 2014 at 12:14 PM

if its authentic – the nba should make him force to sell his team…That a guy thinks like this is bizarre. I realize he is rich and greedy but this 1861 stuff isn’t acceptable anywhere.
