Report: Steve Kerr “expects” to be offered, will take Knicks coaching job

This has been the buzz around the league for weeks: The New York Knicks coaching job is Steve Kerr’s if he wants it.

At some point in the next few days Mike Woodson will be officially let go by the Knicks. Everyone knows it, including Woodson. When looking for a replacement to run a triangle (or at least triangle-light) system Phil Jackson’s coaching tree isn’t that big. Kerr, the former Bulls player, Suns GM and current broadcaster with TNT can be considered part of that tree.

Kerr think’s he will get an offer, reports George Willis at the New York Post.

According to a source close to the situation, Kerr “absolutely expects” to be offered the job. “And if he’s offered the job, he’s definitely going to do it,” the source told The Post.

The Post has learned Kerr has had conversations with his bosses at Turner Sports about adjusting his schedule as an analyst during the upcoming playoffs should he be named the Knicks’ head coach.

“Definitely” seems a little strong here, if you ask me. Likely? Sure. But if watching negotiations (sports, business, political) has taught us anything, it’s that nothing is definite.

Kerr would have to give up life in warm and sunny San Diego, where he wanted to be to spend more time with family, and he would have to give up a relatively cushy TNT broadcast job, to throw himself to the wolves in New York. Next season the Knicks are not going to be able to dramatically change the roster, and they are going to be installing a new offensive system. There are going to be bumps. The media there is not as forgiving as Phoenix (to put it kindly) and the fans expect things to turn around quickly.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride, no matter where it ultimately leads, Kerr needs to be sure that’s what he wants.

That said, you know that back channel communications have already taken place and that if Kerr had no interest this would be dead already. Most people around the league expect Kerr to take the job, this report certainly reflects that.
