This had been expected for almost a week, but Tuesday it became official:

North Carolina State’s T.J. Warren is declaring for the NBA Draft. The announcement was made through the university.

“It’s been a fun ride the last few years. I’ve had some great experiences and now I feel I’m ready to play at the next level,” Warren said in a released statement. “Playing in the NBA has been a lifelong dream of mine and playing at NC State has prepared me well to achieve my dream.”

Warren is projected as a mid first-round pick, reports PBT’s draft expert Ed Isaacson of NBADraftblog.com.

The 6’8” forward can put up points, he was third in the nation at 24.9 per game. He did that scoring in transition with a good midrange shooting game. Which is what makes him interesting as an NBA level prospect — NBA teams are moving away from the midrange game. If you’re shooting from there you better create your own shot then hit a high percentage from there (Dirk Nowitzki is the model here).

Warren is not great at creating his own shot and he knocked down just 27 percent of his threes last season — NBA teams are going to work on him to improve that. You can’t play the three or be a small four in the NBA unless you can shoot with real range and space the floor.

That said he can defend and can become an interesting rotation player in the NBA. He’s going to give that a shot starting next year.
