UPDATE 10:33: Dante Cunningham is now out of jail after having posted $150,000 bail, according to multiple reports. He is under orders not to contact the woman in question.

3:59 pm: After getting arrested for the second time in three days, and over the objections of the defense attorney, Monday a judge ordered Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham to spend more time in jail awaiting charges over an alleged threat to a woman who had lived with him.

Cunningham was first arrested last Friday morning on an alleged felony domestic abuse charge that he choked a woman who said she had been living with him for the past eight months (she said there had been a rough patch of late in the relationship). He was released on $40,000 bail and told as part of this to stay away from the woman and not have contact with her.

As previously reported, he was arrested again on Sunday and police gave some details of what led to the second arrest, via the Star-Tribune.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, the woman called police back to the home in the 400 block of Medina Road and said Cunningham was violating a court order for protection that required the NBA veteran to not have contact with the woman.

She said was she was receiving “threatening messages” from Cunningham, said Police Chief Ed Belland. “Officers reviewed the messages and found they were direct and rose to a terroristic level.”

Cunningham turned himself in shortly before noon Sunday in Minneapolis, the chief added.

Monday Cunningham was in court wearing the orange jail jump suit and his lawyer pushed for him to be let out but the judge was not playing along, tweets Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press.

Cunningham is next due in court May 7 for the next steps in what will be a combined case of the two incidents.

The Timberwolves have released this statement:

“The situation with Dante Cunningham is very fluid and we continue to monitor all available information. We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behavior described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate.”

Cunningham, 26, is in his fifth NBA season. He has averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds a game in about 20 minutes a night off the bench for the Timberwolves this season.

Cunningham is a free agent after this season.
