Lance Stephenson ejected after getting in Dwyane Wade’s face (VIDEO)

Mar 27, 2014, 12:19 AM EDT

Lance Stephenson is who he is because he plays with emotion, with a chip on his shoulder.

But what he did against the Heat was stupid.

It started in the third quarter when Stephenson and Dwyane Wade picked up a double technical for a little shoving match (seen below). Frankly, the double tech on that was a cop-out by the refs — I would have let it go, if anyone deserved one it was Wade — but once the ruling comes down you have to know you have a “T” you have to rein it in a little.

Stephenson didn’t. With five minutes to go in a close game Stephenson made a nice move and scored, then as he ran back by Wade he got in his face and chirped. He said some words that caught the referee’s ear (or at least it was how he said nothing). Stephenson got another technical for it, that got him tossed. No, it wasn’t a good call, but that’s not the point for Stephenson.

It was his emotions getting the better of him — it doesn’t matter if you don’t like the call, once he got his first technical he could not get in Wade’s face like that. Stephenson is too key to this Pacers team in creating half-court offense to get ejected in important games like this (he had 15 points on the night).

David West said the same thing postgame, and said it to Stephenson.

The Pacers need Stephenson and he made a stupid mistake that could have hurt his team.

But it didn’t. The Pacers picked up an 84-83 win in one of the best games of the season. But the games are only going to get more intense, more emotional, and Stephenson has to keep his head about him.

Did Wade ask for the T and then get it? Unless there was something you can’t see in this video, there was nothing there at all.

    • kinggw - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:51 AM

You cant taunt. Whether you think it was egregious or not, he taunted Wade.

      • apkyletexas - Mar 27, 2014 at 1:14 AM

If that were true, why would LeBron be allowed to glare and point and mouth off after numerous baskets last night?

If that were true, Kevin Garnett would be tossed from every game he ever played. By halftime.

Taunting is totally legal and accepted by the league. Those refs tonight were trying to prevent a fight between Wade and Stephenson – they may have still been right on that point. Stephenson was definitely amped up.

      • casualcommenter - Mar 27, 2014 at 1:21 AM

“Taunting is totally legal and accepted by the league.”

Is that why taunting is listed in the rulebook as a foul? Because it’s “totally legal.”

The taunting technical foul is inconsistently enforced, which is unfair to players. However, it is explicitly listed in the rulebook as a foul. I’d post the link here except the stupid comment filter on this website blocks comments with web links.

So Google “NBA taunting” and the official NBA website description of the foul will be the first result.

      • casualcommenter - Mar 27, 2014 at 1:24 AM

P.S. LeBron was assessed a technical foul for taunting after his infamous dunk on Jason Terry last year. All he did was glare at Terry after the dunk, yet he received a technical due to a “taunting” violation.

It’s a very inconsistently enforced foul, but it’s absolutely a rule violation, as kinggw said.

      • kinggw - Mar 27, 2014 at 1:32 AM

Because he wasnt in anyone’s face when he did it. He did gesture in Stephenson’s direction. He didnt get in his face do it. That’s an apples to oranges comparison.

KG is also a poor example. He never gets in anyone’s face after a basket or a block. He usually does his jawing during tie ups and such. To taunt someone you have to have done something first like score, make a defensive play, etc. to taunt someone. KG yelling in someone’s face is just that. You’re describing something totally different than what happened. By NBA rules, Stephenson taunted and they called him on it. I’ve seen worse but it was taunting.

Traveling is in the rule book too… doesn’t mean it gets called.

    • ranfan12 - Mar 27, 2014 at 1:17 AM

Nah, that’s just a quick bailout the moves refs like to do lol

    • m3dman3 - Mar 27, 2014 at 7:59 AM

They really tried to give Miami that game. Lebron does that all the time and never gets a T. This league is an embarrassment, catering to giant babies like Lebron.

  2. davidly - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:34 AM

I would have let it go, if anyone deserved one it was Wade — but once the ruling comes down you have to know you have a “T” you have to rein it in a little.
    I agree on both counts.

He said some words that caught the referee’s ear.
Can’t say if the ref heard what he said, but he apparently didn’t think it warranted a tech until the Heat demanded it.

Bottom line is Stephenson got suckered by Wade and I’m not sure he’ll ever learn from that, which is a shame because he’s the only guy they got who drives and finishes with any kind of regularity.

      Truly stated.

  3. imthedudedude - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:54 AM

Go get em Lance! Didn’t see anything wrong with that. Just a lil back n forth.

    • spthegr8 - Mar 27, 2014 at 11:43 AM

^^^ Agreed. Let em play. I want players to determine the outcome of the games. NOT the refs!! ^^^

  4. imthedudedude - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:57 AM

Lance got the last laugh as well…

I hate the NBA taunting technical foul because it’s randomly enforced.
Either enforce it every time, or remove it entirely. Fouls that are enforced at random are very unfair to players.

Ejecting a player for taunting is extremely weak, but it can happen so long as the rule is in the rule book.

Terrible call aimed at helping Miami win

    • beni620 - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Really? You got to be a Pacer FAN. There were a lot of terrible calls and missed calls in that game. The refs didn’t determine outcome nor did they try to help the Heat. Watch the game as if you are a referee. I love basketball but I want die because a ref missed a call.
      Not a FANATIC.

    • dynasonic - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:25 PM

      THANK YOU

  8. reesesteel23 - Mar 27, 2014 at 7:57 AM

Let me get this str8……lance gets in chalmers face and dwade tries to move lance away from Chalmers and dwade deserves a tech?

  9. reesesteel23 - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:00 AM

Lance got in Chalmers face then got in dwades….just like KD did the other night..just like Lebron did Jason Terry….why is everyone acting as if that call has never been made before?

  10. indyzown - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:13 AM

How can LeBron with 1 technical throw a deliberate blow to the head and not get ejected ?

    • xfactor123 - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:32 AM

If Lebron decaptitated a guy he wouldn’t get ejected. The NBA are whores and Lebron is the biggest money guy they got. David Stern has one philosophy in life: money is more important than integrity.

  11. mrtreyseven - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:31 AM

if you think LeBron thruba deliberate elbow lets me know what your basketball IQ is. He made a basketball move try jumping and shooting a shot with you arms locked with no elbow bend and see how that work out……

The Lance Stevenson ejection was warranted hevand Wade both received a Tech when he ran up on Mario Chalmers. After yu get one tech one would think to just shut up and ball but not Lance he has to mouth off like he never made a lay up before. Trust me im all for trash talk, i believe it makes you a compete way harder but when the Zebras who have the right to eject yu says chill yu might want to take heed

  12. tampajoey - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:45 AM

Wade has always been a dirty player. Refs always go back to bailing out the Heat and in this case with the double T’s to begin with when it was Wade who instigated the situation.

  13. parlett316 - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:52 AM

That ref just added another horrible game to his resume

  14. unxpexted1 - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:59 AM

If you’re going to call the T on the that last one on Lance than call it. BUT waiting way later until AFTER D Wade called for it is what made it suspects. Normally when a player gets a T it’s pretty immediate by the refs. And it doesn’t appear he did anything but walk by him, look at him and say “What!?”. I mean c’mon.

But this was a wildly inconsistent game by the refs on both sides so guess its not surprising.

    • iskuterista - Apr 1, 2014 at 3:19 AM

Why is everybody here saying Wade asked for the T and got it? What I saw was Wade simply laughing at Stephenson’s clown act, after which the referee called the tech. Wade looked at the referee with his hands up only because he thought he was also being whistled for a T, but he was in no way asking for that tech.

Ridiculous how this thread has lost all objectivity to blind fan bias.

  15. nickjackalson - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:04 AM

Wade is established, if a little over the hill, Stevenson up-and coming..
nothing wrong with reigning him in before he looses his act altogether..
emotions are nice and all, just don´t try to look like some scumbag playing basketball
(which all players do from time to time, because that is what being too emotional on the court does to players)

  16. phillycannon - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:31 AM

so after wade SMILED at stephenson, he baited the ref to give him a tech. stephenson clearly was walking away for a good amount of time. He only got the tech because heat players bitched. refs shouldnt do that. if they didnt see or here, no harm no foul.

nba is lame. what happend to the days of REAL rivalry’s. not the espn manufactured rivalry.

    Sixers-Celtics, Celtic-lakers, Detroit-Chi, Ind-Ny, Mia-Ny, Port-Hou etc

    Real rivals!!

    • iskuterista - Apr 1, 2014 at 3:22 AM

What? Was I watching a different game? Because I thought I clearly saw the referee responded to Stephenson mouthing off at Wade by finally calling it. It was a tad late, yes, perhaps because they didn’t want to call it but Lance was really asking for it by extending his act. Stupid move.

  17. irvfin3 - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:42 AM

Stephenson didn’t deserve that tech when wade pushed him. Second one idk taunting should be condoned in the NBA I love seeing that It’s part of the competitiveness

  18. money2long - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:46 AM

LOL @ chalmers’ dumb self trying to trip up lance. which probably fueled lance’s emotional reaction even more.

  19. nghtrder169 - Mar 27, 2014 at 11:34 AM

The Refs are the ones that “need to put their big boy pants on.”

  20. raidmagic - Mar 27, 2014 at 11:46 AM

What a bunch of crap. He didn’t deserve the first one, totally a bail out call by the refs but they do that all the time. Easier for them to double T guys then stand for what they believe happened and back it up. On the second one that is just silly. There was no reason to T him up there.

  21. jtbsteeler - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:06 PM

    Lance “scarecrow” Stephenson

  22. nykfanwakemeupin2015 - Mar 27, 2014 at 12:21 PM

Wade is such a punk. I wish someone would ring his bell. He is in such a need of an attitude adjustment.

  23. cwilson6843 - Mar 27, 2014 at 2:27 PM

Oh god yall are crazy. Lance just got big because Dexter Pittman is no longer on the heat. I’m pretty sure he remembers the 2011 playoffs when he was jawing off to lebron. I mean wade looked confused when lance walked past him. Lance needs to manage his anger cuz its gonna hurt his team come playoffs, when emitions are real high. Goodluck homie
