Omer Asik swats Luc Mbah A Moute dunk attempt (VIDEO)

Mar 21, 2014, 8:46 AM EDT

That is the Omer Asik we saw so much of last season — he remains one of the best defensive centers in the game. It’s why despite his contract (and the fact Houston can use him) I think some team trades for Asik this summer.

Luc Richard Mbah A Moute got the pass and was going up for the dunk midway through the third quarter Thursday night and Asik shut him down. Rejected. Everything but the finger wag.

That was just one of the highlight plays as Houston cruised to a 129-106 win over a tired Timberwolves team on the second night of a back-to-back.

So much passion! So much emotion!

The 2 games Dwight has been out, Asik has played like a man possessed…playing like hes trying to steal Dwight starting spot. If only McHale can figure out how to get these 2 to play well together (like he did with Parish in the 80s), who knows how far the Rockets can fly…

I don’t think there’s much McHale can do.

On defense, with more teams playing small, you force either Asik or Howard to cover faster players out on the perimeter if you play the two of them together.

On offense, Asik is very raw, and Dwight is only a threat to score in the low-post area. With neither guy capable of playing the Marc Gasol-role by operating in the high post or the Ryan Anderson role as a stretch power forward, the spacing on offense will be poor with the two of them in there. Defenses can put a power forward on Asik and not worry about him posting up the smaller defender.

      They just don’t fit.

That being said, Asik is still very useful as a backup. First, he helps the Rockets maintain their defense when Howard is either out due to injury or foul trouble. Second, Asik’s presence allows the team to rest Howard as the playoffs near, and it allows Howard to play more aggressively in games knowing that he has a good backup if he gets into foul trouble early.

“One does not simply dunk on Omer Asik…”
