Kobe Bryant talks Lakers’ future, if Obama could make current roster (VIDEO)

Mar 19, 2014, 2:53 PM EDT

Kobe Bryant was on the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday morning talking all things Lakers — the future of the franchise, Phil Jackson, Mike D’Antoni, and if Barack Obama could make the current roster. The full interview is above but here are the highlights:

• Kobe said he had breakfast last week with Phil Jackson and was told he was going to take the Knicks job, and not surprisingly Kobe expects Phil to do well.

• Dan Patrick (like some Lakers fans) are still hung up on Jim Buss not hiring Jackson to replace Mike Brown last year. Kobe tried to explain how Buss wants to put his own stamp on this team.

• On D’Antoni and if he should return: “I don’t know. It’s been tough on him. He’s been dealing with so many injuries. I don’t know if he’s gotten a fair shake.” Sounds like Kobe understands D’Antoni was never given a roster to fit his system, but that doesn’t mean Kobe wants to play in that system next season.

• Kobe says if the Lakers were a top four team in the West right now he could play. As for next season, “I personally think you’re going to see the Kobe you’re used to seeing.”

• Barack Obama and his lefty shot come up — you can see that part of the interview broken out below.

Kobe needs to shut up already. All he has done is run his mouth since he has been injured.

people be acting like hes been injured forever. not even a full year. hes a superstar in the midst of an nba season. he is obligated as an nba player to answer questions. these questions/answers will then be viewed by the public. what do u expect him to do.. shut up and get fined big globs of money cuz you think he should stop “running” his mouth?

No. I expect him to keep to his word about staying out of the front office’s business. I expect him to realize that his contract hamstrings the Lakers’ ability to rebuild on the fly. I expect him to be supportive of the team and not throw the players and coach under the bus, in a season where he’s only played 6 games. I expect him to act like the face of the franchise, put on his big boy pants, and keep his answers positive and non-committal just like his idol Michael Jordan. So yes, he should stop running his freaking mouth and show the Lakers the same blind loyalty that they showed him with that ridiculous extension.

Hey Sam. He’s Kobe Bryant. He gets asked questions about the team and his future everyday. If he quits talking,he gets fined. Get over it,and deal with ur own anger.

I’m all for Obama giving up the Presidency to become the Lakers GM.

    Kobe to NY?

    • mackcarrington - Mar 19, 2014 at 5:13 PM

The Lakers envision Kobe having a “farewell tour” as a Laker, so they certainly aren’t going to trade him.
He can sit on the floor and hold his breath and throw a fit if he wants, but he’s going to have to play longer than the next 2 years if he wants to go to NY.

If his body allows him to, he will play at least one more season, depending on how the next two seasons play out…

Forget passing MJ on the all time scoring list, he’s very close and it won’t take much for that to happen.

But, once he see’s how his game has changed, it won’t be realistic for him to chase Kareem and the all time points leader…

Had he played this season, he would be in position to claim that in 3 more seasons…

I’m guessing somewhere in Kobe’s mind, he hasn’t given up hope on that yet, regardless of whatever he might say publically on the subject…
