Cavaliers Anthony Bennett out three weeks with knee injury

Mar 10, 2014, 4:05 PM EDT

Mike Brown, Anthony Bennett AP

While you have been busy mocking him Anthony Bennett has shown some signs of improvement — in his last 15 games he has averaged 6.7 points a contest, shot 47.5 percent and played 15 minutes a night. No, even so he is not exactly living up to his No. 1 overall pick billing from the last draft, not by a long shot. And yes, those numbers declined a little in recent games. Still, he has had a couple double-doubles and finally started to get into shape, enough so that maybe you can start to see a rotation player in there. Maybe. Which is better than his insanely poor start to the season, one of the dominoes that helped get Cavaliers GM Chris Grant fired.

However, now Anthony’s nightmare season continues — he will be out at least three weeks with a patellar tendon strain in his left knee, the team announced Monday.

He will miss more than 10 games. If your thought is “they should just shut him down for the season” they might, but for this guy every bit of on-the-court time can help mature his game, so if you can safely get him back in the final handful of games you likely do it.

Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $70,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Monday’s games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $9,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Monday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Bennett’s role and minutes have been reduced as the Cavaliers’ coach Mike Brown has put a lineup with Spencer Hawes, Tristan Thompson and Luol Deng out as much as he could. Bennett (along with Tyler Zeller) has gotten some minutes off the bench. Now you may see more Alonzo Gee.

Bennett needs a lot of run in Summer League and through the next training camp — he needs to commit to conditioning and work on his game, then we’ll see just how big a mistake this pick really was.

As a number 1 pick, he brings shame to Canada. We don’t claim him.

    Lakers all day.

We claim him… why? Wiggins is looking like he won’t be no. 1 pick ;)

    • jamesk2465 - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:12 PM

oh yeah and I’m Canadian and idk bout you but i’m claiming him.

      • shuttaman1990 - Mar 10, 2014 at 7:23 PM

So you are perfectly fine with garbage players representing Canada. Players that decided to take it easy before getting drafted and not working on improving their skills, due to their poor work ethic. Look at how it translated for the cavs.
        Ok… Cool… Cool Cool Cool….

      • shuttaman1990 - Mar 10, 2014 at 7:23 PM

        oh and Lakers all day.

      • jamesk2465 - Mar 10, 2014 at 7:54 PM

and you know this how ? Bennett has already shed 20-30 pounds and was down to his UNLV weight i don’t know where you’re getting these assumptions from

      • ljl2 - Mar 11, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Shuttaman- you realize he had a shoulder surgery that requires you not to do physical activity/exercise to heal, right? Oh, it must not fit the Cleveland hate narrative…

      • tv63 - Mar 11, 2014 at 5:21 PM

Cavs fan here. We love him. He has made a complete turn around and Deng has said repeatedly he finds Bennett in the gym after hours working on his shot. Too bad the rest of them don’t join him as Cavs are dead last in FG%. BUt that’s Mike Brown’s philiosphy All Defense it wins games don’t you know?? Record is 24-40..

If you can stop the sarcasm that would be appreciated. If not, please stop writing about our Cavs.

  3. chiadam - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:08 PM

And a rotation player – maybe – is exactly what you hope for out of the first pick in the draft.

  4. mungman69 - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:28 PM

Why the Hell did Cleveland pick this guy?

  5. jamesk2465 - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:38 PM

Sucks, his play was improving over the last month with breaking his career high twice.

  6. stephenolszewski - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:41 PM

At least jamesk knows he was improving, his rookie year was flawed from the start with Bennett being overweight but Mike Brown didn’t help Bennett at all by not giving him consistent playing time. Bennett would make a mistake or two and he’d bench him. Instead of coaching him up or learn from his mistakes he sat him for games at a time.

    • tv63 - Mar 11, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Exactly. Mike Brown is a horrible fit for this team that is mostly rooks. It was never a secret Mike Brown does not like Rooks so why in God’s Green Earth the Cavs would rehire him escapes all intelligence! You called it right; if any of the young players Bennett, Dion, Zeller make 1 defensive mistake they are yanked immediately. Never mind Cavs have the second best bench scorer in the Eastern COnference in Waiters. He sits , they sit all the while Mike Brown is perfectly find watching Jack go 3-15, Deng 3-12 for 39 mins losing, losing and losing some more. Yeah Great coach you got us Dan Gilbert!!

At what point can we blame Mike Brown for this? I’m ready to blame him. Just let me know when it’s socially acceptable.

    • tv63 - Mar 11, 2014 at 5:15 PM

IT IS!! 24-40. Cavs defense actually got worse since the Deng trade in the 29 games since the trade (allowing 108.0 points per 100 possessions) than it was in the 35 games before he arrived (102.5). source nba.com

AS far as offense: the Cavs rank 23rd in scoring, dead last in field goal percentage.

Mike Brown has not been better than Bryon Scott. He has only tied his season wins of 24. Whoop Tee Doo.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

    • paleihe - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:42 PM

      Yes, yes it does.

  10. ravenswhat - Mar 11, 2014 at 12:51 PM

I was shocked then and am still shocked he went no 1. I mean, he wasn’t even on any mock at 1. He was fringe top 4 at best. Such a reach by a crappy franchise.
