Report: Derrick Rose wants Bulls to sign Carmelo Anthony

Mar 7, 2014, 10:30 AM EDT

New York Knicks v Chicago Bulls Getty Images

Let’s connect the dots.

The missing dot: Derrick Rose. What does he think about all this?

Chris Broussard of ESPN:

One source also told me Rose wants to add Anthony.

First of all, this is a little flimsy. When reading about anonymous sources, by rule, multiple sources are better than one. Considered this is buried deep in Broussard’s story, I’d infer this source isn’t completely credible. If Broussard were more confident Rose wants Melo, that should probably lead the story.

But why wouldn’t Rose want Melo?

In the three years Rose led the Bulls in scoring, his No. 2s were Luol Deng (17.6 points per game), Carlos Boozer (17.5) and Deng (15.3). That’s not terrible, but it’s not ideal.

Melo would take a lot of heat off Rose – and vice versa – and they work from enough different areas of the court to complement each other. Although neither is the lights-out 3-point shooter who’d ideally complement the other, this is pretty good as far as high-volume scoring pairings go.

If I were Rose, I’d certainly want a teammate who can both help me win and relieve some of the defensive pressure I face.

  1. money2long - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:50 AM

The fact of the matter is , MELO would simply be better appreciated if he were on a winning team. Sadly he’s wasting his prime years in a losing situation, and that’s never good to see for a future hall of famer.

Now it would be quite the story if he accepts the challenge of helping to turn the Knicks around

    • pudgalvin - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:03 AM

A lot of the way he’s viewed is self inflicted, but I agree. He isn’t that much different than Durant. Durant has become more efficient, but some of that comes with having much better players on your team.

      • money2long - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:05 AM

        Correct

      • bigkurt6 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:47 PM

        durrant is younger though

    • spthegr8 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:38 AM

      @Money
I agree with you too, 100%. Now I am not saying they would win it all but, A team with Melo, a healthy D Rose ( If he can get to being healthy again, I hope so ) Noah ( The most versatile Big man in the game. He does a lil bit of everything ) Taj, Jimmy butler & Dunleavy, with Tibbs coaching them…….. They’d be TOUGH that’s all I’m saying!!

      • calkinsrob - Mar 7, 2014 at 4:06 PM

Sounds like we would have to get rid of either Taj or Dunleavy to have a shot at Melo.

      • gmsingh123 - Mar 8, 2014 at 10:29 AM

Trade Rose to get Melo? That works for me!

    • stevendizazzo - Mar 7, 2014 at 2:25 PM

melo made the knicks a losing team. dont let him off the hook that easy. going to the bulls works only if d.rose stays and contiune to be the #1 player. melo cant be the best player on any team. he is really not that good. A 2 yes.

      • unxpexted1 - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Dude, the Knicks hadn’t made it past a 1st round in over 10 years till melo showed up.

      • aboogy123456 - Mar 7, 2014 at 4:21 PM

your comment reminds of when people said that stoudemire was better than melo when they first teamed up.

      • money2long - Mar 7, 2014 at 7:08 PM

quiet down. u made no sense basing your argument on that first line. grow a brain. or show me someone with respected basketball knowledge who would agree with ur insane stupid first line. you internet haters are pure idiots when it comes to carmelo anthony.

  2. jerze2387 - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:51 AM

Report: Bulls want Derrick Rose to get on the #*&$^*)&#$ court

Who cares what Rose wants. he hasnt had the teams interests in his consideration for 2 years now. Lets ask Noah who he wants, its his team now. hes earned it more than Rose has

    • money2long - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:54 AM

Did u just like your own comment

      • spursareold - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:57 AM

He’ll go blind if he keeps that up….

      • money2long - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:58 AM

        Lol

    • znbak1znbak1 - Mar 7, 2014 at 7:16 PM

I was thinking the same thing…smh…

  3. dedicatedkrys - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:06 AM

The only problem with signing Carmelo is that he doesn’t play defense…he’s never played defense…that’s not who he is…

The Bulls are in the position they are is due to their defense! I can see from an offensive point of view why he would be appealing but I don’t think he’s a good fit for the team.

    • Chris - Mar 8, 2014 at 10:12 PM

Boozer doesn’t play any defense either and that’s who he will be replacing

  4. malek773 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:09 AM

If the Bulls can Trade Dunleavy and then amnesty Boozer they would have enough to give Melo about 18Mil per year. If he’s willing to take that then you absoultely sign him. If you have to trade Taj to get him the only way I do it then is if you can Brin Mirotic over as well. You need to have a complete core to beat Miami. Also look at these teams in the West. They are loaded with guys. If the Bulls have to get ride of Taj and only have Melo, Rose and Noah surrounded with a bunch of nobodys they wont win a title. NBA stars like Melo, Rose, Lebron etc make so much money on endorsments that they should be willing to sacrafice a few million on their contracts to strengthen the team. I believe the Bulls will dip into the luxury tax to sign Melo, but they aren’t going to go 30Mil over either. Hopefully they can get him and keep a good team together.

    • therealhtj - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:16 AM

You’d still be asking him to leave about 40mil on the table. What about Melo leads you to believe he wants to win THAT bad?

      • paleihe - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:04 PM

What do you know about Melo that says he wouldn’t leave money on the table?

      • sportsfan18 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:34 PM

La La could buy a lot of trinkets with that $40 million…

      • maracineanu16 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:36 PM

He is better than you at basketball, isn’t he?

      • malek773 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:42 PM

It wouldnt be 40Mil. He only gets that extra year with the Knicks. So if he signs straight with the Bulls for 18M per thats about 72Mil vs about 88Mil on the max deal. He’s going to lose the 5th year of a contract with anyone he signs with other than the Knicks. so 72M-88M is only 16M difference and THATS ONLY if the Bulls give him 18Mil per year. Now they can offer him more in years 2,3,4 on a contract. They can actually max out those years. All it means is they would pay luxury tax every additional season if they dont trim the payroll somehow. So technically if they offer 18M on the first year and max out the contract the other years he only loses 4M (give or take a few million). Chicago could also do wha Miami did with Lebron and pull a sign and trade with the Knicks so Melo gets his fifth year. So your assumption of losing 40M is way way off.

      • maracineanu16 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:42 PM

sorry, my comment wasn’t for You, my bad

    • basketballbro - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:13 PM

I completely agree with you saying that Melo should be willing to take less in order to win.. But if you look at this from another point of view, NBA players shouldn’t be expected to take pay cuts, because this is their job. 18 million vs 22-23 million.. That’s a 20% decrease.. Would you be willing to take 20% less money to make your employer/company more successful?

      • calkinsrob - Mar 7, 2014 at 4:12 PM

Change the last sentence to “would you be willing to take a pay cut for a better job(in terms of happiness)” Assuming he wants to win, and would be happier if he was on a winning team, its perfectly reasonable to expect a player to take a pay cut for that. People do that all the time all over the world.

      • jimeejohnson - Mar 7, 2014 at 5:04 PM

If I had 20 million in the bank already, YES I WOULD!

      • malek773 - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:39 AM

Theres a difference in taking 20 percent less when you make 100K a year and 20M a year. I also dont make money off endorsments and stuff. If I was an NBA player, yed I’d take less to win. Thats just me though. We’ll see what Melo does in a few months I guess

  5. cubb1 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:10 AM

    Who is Derrick Rose?

    • cruzan80 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:31 AM

      Lol……good one sir.

    • calkinsrob - Mar 7, 2014 at 4:13 PM

uh cruz, you dropped that one the way hakeem nicks drops passes with the giants…

      • cruzan80 - Mar 8, 2014 at 9:33 AM

        …if your his girlfriend.

  6. cruzan80 - Mar 7, 2014 at 11:14 AM

This is as foreseeable a marriage if there ever was one in my opinion. Makes waaaaaaaay too much sense for both sides to make this happen come July. He’s gonna make money regardless. Thibs is in my opinion the best coach in the league. The roster actually makes sense & will complement his game perfectly. I can’t see anything stopping from happening other than a miracle run deep into the playoffs by the Knicks….so yeah…..I can’t see anything stopping this from happening.

    • pharohislife - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Thibbs is a Top 5 Coach but not The best, maybe Top 3 now. But Pop and Doc are still ahead of him.

      • bhunter1995 - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:49 PM

Thibs is #2 behind Pop, Rivers is overrated.

      • cruzan80 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:17 PM

I’ll give you Pop…..but take the 3 Hall of Fame players that Ainge handed Doc in Boston & he’s probably unemployed right now. Doc is SERIOUSLY overrated.

      • calkinsrob - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:20 PM

You could also say Thibs defensive scheme was the reason Doc had so much success in boston.

      • ddj221 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:22 PM

Based on what? Doc did poorly with every regular team he’s had that wasn’t loaded with stars.

Pop has had a very good bunch for the past 15 years, but I’ll give him the nod because his players are still doing well as old men. There isn’t one other coach in the league that a person can legitimately put ahead of Thibs beyond Pop.
        Spoelstra??? Nope
        Carlisle??? Nope
        Scott Brooks??? Nope
        Frank Nogel??? Nope

All of these guys have serious stars in their starting 5 right now and still aren’t dominating like the Bulls did with Rose healthy. Ask yourself, if Thibs had Lebron, Rose & Bosh, how many rings would he have right now? How many regular season W’s?

      • aboogy123456 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Thibs is a good coach but I would definitely take doc ahead of him and pop is miles ahead of everybody else. The issue I have with thibs is that he treats every game like it’s the last of the season, and tends to overplay his guys. It leads to injuries and doesn’t allow bench players to get experience. Doc seems to not only be great at the X’s and O’s, but he get the most out of his players. Look at how he was able to improve blake griffin and deandre jordan in his first season with the clippers. I thought they were holding the team back but they are now a reason I think the clips have a shot in the west.

      • pharohislife - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:52 PM

I can’t agree with that, look at what Doc has done with the Clippers this year. Look.what Doc did in 2010 when the Celtics got back to the Finals after a pretty bad regular season. Doc is a Great motivator and players want to play for him that’s what makes his coaching style. Give the C’s any other coach in 2010 and I don’t believe they get to the Finals, but I don’t know if yall remember that season well enough. It was a while ago lol.

And Thibbs is a Great Coach he can get any team he has to at least be competitive if not anything else, buuut his coaching style has proven to be detrimental to the team at times. In past seasons he has played all his starters waay too many minutes, more than necessary at times. And players kept going down with injury, Deng, Rose, Noah. He’d sometimes even keep them in during blowouts. It has cost them in the Playoffs.

But you can put Thibbs over Doc, their not that far off, as long as you have them both somewhere in the Top 3.

      • pharohislife - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:56 PM

And from an X and O standpoint, Doc is one of the best coaches in that regard without a doubt. The plays he draws up out of a timeout or at the end of a game are tops in the league.

      • cruzan80 - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:26 PM

        @ pharohislife

I’m not looking at what Doc is doing with a loaded Clippers team because the Bulls aren’t loaded. The Bulls have been essentially a one man team at best….Rose. Thibs is so good of a coach…it doesn’t even matter if that one man isn’t playing…the team is still a tough out every night. That’s coaching. D.J. Augustine was let go by the Pacers & waived by the Raptors…now all of a sudden he’s a “solid PG” again. That’s coaching. Who the heck was Jimmy Butler 2 years ago??? That’s coaching. When Rivers had T-Mac in his prime down in Orlando his last season there he went 21-61. The year before Ainge hooked him up with KG & Ray Allen, he took Paul Pierce & the Celtics to 24-58. Thibs has ALWAYS been a solid coach. Remember those Knick teams in the 90’s that was always top 5 in defense every year…guess who was on the bench. That Celtic team that won the chip under Doc with their solid D….guess who was on that bench????

I hate to sound like I’m killing Doc here because I do think he’s a good coach……. but I got him closer to top 10 than top 5.

    • sportsfan18 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:44 PM

Huge Bulls fan, as you know Cruz… you also know I don’t care for MeHog, MeBrick either.

As for Thibs, he’s one of the top coaches for sure. Pop is #1 by a long way.

      Doc is overrated, a lot.

Thibs needs to work on his rotations better, like Pop, rest guys, play them fewer min’s to save and have them ready for the playoffs like Pop does.

Even if Thibs is the 2nd best coach in the league, there is a big gap between him and Pop.

If Thibs would lower the min’s and give guys days off like Pop, then he’d be pushing Pop a lot more than he is now for the best coach in the league.

Luckily for Melo, his lack of defense would be covered up on the Bulls as it’s their strength due to Thibs.

Now, Thibs is gonna insist he play some D and we’ll all have to see how that works out. I wonder how Thibs will react when he watches the 151st player drive through Melo’s turn style defense…

Might he blow up? Pull MeDefenseless out of the game?

If Melo does end up on the Bulls, it is going to be interesting… especially if D Rose comes back healthy and at his previous level… I said IF mind you.

Because IF he does come back at a high level, an elite level, it will still be HIS team. Now if he comes back and he’s simply good, all star level good but not top 5 or top 10 in the league, then it gets more interesting. Would Melo try to take over the team?

it would be a smaller version of when LBJ went to Miami and everyone said that it was still D Wade’s team. They worked it out and it became LBJ’s team by his 2nd year down there.

Well, neither D Rose or Melo are LBJ obviously, but their pecking order will play itself out. If D Rose is close to the way he was before, the tie will go to him as he’s been on the Bulls…

But if Melo is clearly better (shudder) then it will be sad… and interesting…

      • aboogy123456 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:51 PM

I really really hope that Rose comes back close to what he was. That bulls team would be very exciting and easy to root for, but I get worried that Rose could be this generation’s grant hill.

      • malek773 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:57 PM

Thibs definetly needs to work on the minutes he plays his guys but to his benefit his roster is nothing like the Pops roster. Pop has actually depth on his team. The bulls are only about 7 or 8 guys deep. Snell wouldn’t even sniff the court if he was on the Spurs. Losing Rose and Deng hurt our depth this year.

You can also look at it like this. Duncan, Giboboli, and Parker all took less money on their contracts then they could of got elsewhere to help the orginization bring in other guys. The spurs roster does not have any max guys on it. This helps there front office bring in guys that can actually contribute.

After Augistine and Gibson the Bulls bench is non-existent. Snell,Murphy, Nazi? Theres simply little to no depth on the team to have a deeper rotation.

      • chitownmatt - Mar 7, 2014 at 2:09 PM

Rose will be back and better than he ever was…
Mark my words, a year from now he will be leading the MVP votes and the Bulls will be in first place.
Good things come to those who wait.

      • cruzan80 - Mar 7, 2014 at 4:12 PM

        Sportsfan7,

When/if Melo signs with the Bulls it’ll be no different from when all other great players finally get on a team where they are no longer forced to carry the offense…..they play defense.

Paul Pierce & Ray Allen were never regarded as great defenders until they teamed up with KG & where under Thib’s defensive schemes. D. Wade was never regarded as a top defender either…until Lebron & Bosh showed up. Sure there are players who are just naturally above average defenders….but most elite scorers are not unless motivated to do so.

Also, you can keep telling yourself this all you want but unless Rose comes back to be exactly what he was BEFORE the knee injury…..Melo will be the man on that team. Heck….it isn’t even Rose’s team now. They’ve already proven that they are still very good WITHOUT him & Noah if anything is the heart & soul of that squad. They’ve tried this already. They’ve had Rose at full strength & failed….they know this….hence the reason why they are courting Melo. Melo…not Rose….would be the difference between YOUR Bulls winning the chip next season or not.

Your hate won’t allow you to admit this now but once Melo hangs a couple of 40 point games in a Bulls uniform on their way to the Finals while Rose is possibly sitting on the bench in one of his finest suites again…..you might finally put down that bottle of Haterade, give the man his props & thank Melo for hanging the 1st banner in the United Center there since MJ.

    • sportsfan18 - Mar 7, 2014 at 9:16 PM

      Cruz,

You know Im a Bulls fan and you know i don’t like melo.

The Bulls should wait one year for Kevin Love.

Kevin Love for his career shoots OVER 36% from 3 pt range. Melo shoots .345% for his career from 3 point range.

Kevin Love averages 13.6 rebounds per game for his career (while NOT being athletic, strong, being slow etc…). Dwight Howard, who is stronger, faster, jumps higher averages 12.9 boards a game for his career.

Heck, the great Shaq and his is great, only averaged 10.9 boards a game in his career and he was unstoppable for most of his career, too big and strong.

Oh, Love shoots about 81% from the free throw line, great as a big man. some say he isnt a big man. well he weighs 260 lbs and Hakeem Oljuawon only weighed 255 lbs. hakeem was 7 feet (many say he was under though and Love is 6′ 10″ so his is a big man.

Love can really pass the ball too. great one handed full court outlet passed for fast breaks… on the money passes too…

Oh yeah, a couple of summers ago, Kevin Love, D Rose and Russell Westbrook all trained together in L.A. during the off season.

D Rose knows him. Hell, Love shoots better from 3 than Melo, certainly out rebounds him and passes a hell of a lot better than melo and he’s younger than melo AND he can be gotten for less money than melo too.

i hope he resigns with the knicks… ya’ll deserve him.

Please Bulls, pass on this inefficient volume scorer…

i know Love doesn’t play D either, but neither does melo so nothing is lost there.

      • cruzan80 - Mar 8, 2014 at 9:47 AM

        Sportsfan7,

So far……..Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose, Gar Forman & probably most Bulls fans all disagree with you buddy….get over it….being a hater is a lonely life.

Karma is a you know what. You spend all year hating on Melo & now your team trying to sign him……as they should.

Kevin Love doesn’t solve any of the issues the Bulls have…..Melo does. They struggle to score…even with Rose. Melo is arguably the best scorer in the entire league. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to know that it’s in the Bulls best interest to try their hardest to sign him.

Again, do yourself a favor & get over it.

This is more than “a little flimsy.” Borderline irresponsible to “report” this, from a journalistic perspective?

Why isn’t Melo his son’s favorite player?

    • 1heatedtoombrayduh - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:05 PM

his son probably doesnt see him as a bball player, he just sees him as his dad..not uncommon

    • philtration - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Because he plays for the Knicks

  10. alexb1234 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:05 PM

what player or team in their right mind would not want their team to sign Carmelo Anthony? This story is not news. In other news it is reported that players want the sun to come up every day.

  11. dacaps - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:08 PM

I see a change of heart here for D rose, hope it’s not a little too late. My reason being that when LBJ was in his free agency, he was leaning a bit towards Chicago at that time but D rose didn’t even care not mention help to recruit LBJ and he went as far as even letting it be known he didn’t care. By now he probably would gave had 3 rings, already being considered the best guard to have played and would probably not even be hurt by now since they wouldn’t have been too much pressure to carry the team.. Well like I said hope it’s not too little too late.

    • malek773 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:48 PM

You know rose texted Lebron that summer and said he wouldn’t mind playing with him right? By saying he doesn’t recruit Rose won’t go out of his way to call guys and tell them hey come play here in chicago its great blah blah blah. He thinks guys should want to come play in Chicago and with him rather than him chasing anyone. I don’t blame him for that. But he’s not stopping people from coming either. He’s just not going to beg someone to play with him.

      • bkbell3 - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:19 PM

That’s not really a great fit, both are great with the ball in their hands and neither is a great spot up shooter. Wade works cause he moves without the ball very well. Rose for all his athletic greatness is not a great point guard. His ability to get into the lane should translate to more open looks for a team who didn’t really have anyone who could create for themselves. 6 assists per game is not enough for that team and Miami proved if you keep him out of the lane and make him a jump shooter he is much less affective. I think lbj is more effective with a point like chalmers who can shoot the three and get to the rim, effectively lbj is the point guard.

  12. suckit619 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Can we please stop believing what Broussard’s fake sources are saying? This guy is a clown has never had any reliable news. He had it all wrong in 2010 when he said LeBron was going to the Bulls, and then piggybacked Stephen A’s report that he was going to Miami. How does that guy still have a job? Maybe because TMZSPN is a joke…

  13. sportsnut101 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:12 PM

Can’t bulls and Knicks do a sign and trade where it could be for a player and picks or that’s not in new cba rules. Cuz Knicks would take dunleavy n taj Gibson.

But I can’t see melo leaving 40 mill on the table

When lebron started the big three each were makin 13 mil first yr now they up to 19 mill per

    Melo has a tough choice

  14. Dan Gershenson - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:45 PM

He wants them to sign Carmelo and that’s somehow news? Wow. Digging deep there. Look, if we want Melo, we have to not only say goodbye to Boozer and Dunleavy (not a big deal) but also probably Taj and Butler and draft picks and forget about bringing over Mrotic. So you have a core of Rose, Noah and Melo but not a ton else. That doesn’t beat Indiana or Miami. I just see GarPax going another way. They’ll keep Taj, bring over Mrotic and make a run at Lance Stephenson if there’s room. That’s a bigger upgrade than people expect if they’ve really watched any footage of this kid from Europe.

The Bulls should amnesty Derrick Rose if possible or trade him ASAP in order to have room for Melo’s contract. Actually Melo would fit perfectly into the Bulls scheme since all they need is a consistent big time scorer – everyone else just has to play lock down defense (like the Bulls normally do).

Other pluses Melo is a good rebounder and he has a good inside game as well as a great outside game.
The rest of the Bulls team players would just have to score exactly what they’re scoring now,

I’m sorry but I just don’t feel that Anthony would be a good fit for Chicago. Every time Anthony touches the ball time stands still. Heck my watch even slows down watching this guy back down into the paint. Rose and the other Bulls are scrappers on both sides of the ball and with Anthony’s lackluster defensive skills it would destroy Chicago’s chemistry. Hey that’s my two cents.

Why would Rose want Melo on the Bulls? I guess Rose would be able to watch Melo every night from the DL??? I guess it makes sense???
