Pacers’ Lance Stephenson poses for photo with $1 million cash

Feb 26, 2014, 10:46 PM EDT

Lance Stephenson isn’t simply being crass here in posting a photo of himself with a million dollars in cold, hard cash.

The money was on the table as part of a league-sponsored meeting with players explaining the importance of managing one’s finances.

From Scott Agness of

Once practice concluded and the players completed their media obligations, they gathered in the team’s film room back in the locker room at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. There, they sat through a mandatory league meeting centered on financial education.

Managing their money is important and can’t be stressed enough. The players were instructed to always know where their money is going, and shown why hiring a business manager can be a huge help. Audits, what they are and what is needed, were also discussed.

Nothing wrong with taking the photo here under these circumstances, as I can imagine many of us would have done the same.

Ed Reed would settle for being able to take a photo with 50 large.

Read up on what Michael Carter Williams is doing with the Sixers. To save you all the trouble. Here it goes…

“His rookie contract guarantees him $4.5 million over his first two seasons. He could make a total of $10 million if the Sixers pick up the final two seasons of his contract.

But his salary is deposited into a trust he can’t touch for three years. Carter-Williams is living off endorsement deals with Nike and Panini trading cards.”

So he is not able to spend even 1 penny of his NBA salary. Yes, he has money to spend and to live on, that is NOT my point. The point is that he is saving money already, learning how to build it up even more.

I can’t believe how SO many are so stupid with money. I mean if you know you’ve made say $80 million already, are still playing and yet you know you have basically zero money and are living paycheck to paycheck in year 8 in the league, wouldn’t you do something about that knowing your career is more than half over?

It’s really not hard to believe, especially in a professional sports where the focus is allways on ‘the next game’.

Agreed. More players need to take the Jamal Mashburn route. Mashburn knew he couldn’t play ball forever, and had already planned his future before his knees gave out. He bought up a bunch of different franchises and was in the running to buy the Pelicans a couple of years back. A.I. and Antoine Walker should have used him as a model. Now they’re both BROKE. LMAO
