UPDATE: Maybe or maybe not there is a “Space Jam 2”; LeBron James not in… yet

Feb 21, 2014, 11:33 PM EDT

space jam

UPDATE 11:33 p.m.: Well, someone maybe tied Warner Brothers may be putting together a team for Space Jam 2, but contrasting earlier reports LeBron James‘ people say he is not yet attached, updates Brian Windhorst of The report says there are no efforts by Warner Brothers to make this film, at least officially.

What to make of it? Movie ideas bubble up and this may be something in an early but far from solidified form. Something with some names attached, something leaked to a media source to help it gain momentum.  It may or may happen.

We need to emphasize LeBron is not attached right now. That could change. You can bet there have been talks and LeBron is probably interested, but that is different from being inked to the project. I still bet if the entire rest of the project comes together LeBron would be in.

8:27 p.m.: The Monstars are back.

Probably. Having a script in development is a long way from an actual movie, but this seems to have enough people attached to it — there is enough star power and juice — that this particular project could become a reality.

LeBron James is working with the sons of NBC Sports legend Dick Ebersol and Warner Bros. to produce Space Jam 2, according to (via ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, apparently an avid reader of the Hollywood trades).

Broadcasting veteran Dick Ebersol‘s sons have come on board to develop the sequel to 1996 animated/live-action hit Space Jam as a starring vehicle for James, the Miami Heat star who broke his nose during last night’s game against the Oklahoma City when the Thunder’s Serge Ibaka got him in the face after a dunk.

Another Space Jam film? Why not? The first film, which broke ground for Warner Bros and starred then-Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan and a slew of other top NBA players, ended up grossing $230M worldwide for the studio and even launched a kids TV series.

Let’s be honest, at this point playing with Daffy Duck can’t be worse than a few of his Miami Heat teammates. And sources tell PBT Bugs Bunny is already on the Dwyane Wade knee maintenance program and is taking two out of every three days off before shooting.

This is actually a huge move for the LeBron James brand. Of course, some will complain he is treading on sacred Jordan turf, but if you really think that you need to go watch this film again — it was crass Jordan marketing. Like it or not LeBron is becoming the biggest international star since Jordan. This can only help boost that image domestically and internationally. If he wants to be an icon, this is exactly the kind of move LeBron James should make.

Let’s just hope they take the Pixar route here of putting together a good script to build around and not just slap a bunch of stars up on the screen and call it a movie. Because I saw Space Jam and…

Sweet! I wonder if MJ, Barkley and Ewing will be coaches in it lol. Jason Collins or Bosh can play the pink Bunny seducing Lebron haha. Its got to be better than
    kD`s Thunderrstruck.

  2. antistratfordian - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:43 PM

Wow. That is going to irritate a lot of haters. I like it.

    • belleby123 - Feb 22, 2014 at 8:46 AM

I can’t wait to see how the incorporate the flopping into the games with the cartoon characters.

      • antistratfordian - Feb 22, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Same thing they did with MJ. I don’t know why they’d change anything.

      • belleby123 - Feb 26, 2014 at 8:24 AM

        Nice try, but FAIL.

    • belleby123 - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:18 PM

P.S. I’m fine with Lebron in a sequel to “Space Jam”, just as long as it’s called “Space Cheeze”.

      • antistratfordian - Feb 22, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Bad news… it’s going to be called Space Jam, so you won’t be fine with it, you’re going to be irritated. I like it.

      • belleby123 - Feb 26, 2014 at 8:25 AM

You would. I’m sure LeBron will have the illustrious film career that Shaq had.

      • antistratfordian - Feb 26, 2014 at 3:08 PM

He’s already made a film better than anything by Shaqtus or Error Jordan. More Than a Game is worth watching for any b-ball fan.

      • belleby123 - Feb 27, 2014 at 7:31 AM

That’s great news. He’s big money on the court and he’s no money on the screen. I’m reading you loud and clear.

      • antistratfordian - Feb 27, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Big money either way, home slizzle. More Than a Game was a financial and critical success. Studios are still paying James to put things on screen (TV show, films). Have you heard about “The Decision”? It was the most watched cable or broadcast program that night, and the highest rated show for any non-NFL ESPN program that year.

      • belleby123 - Feb 28, 2014 at 8:52 AM

Financial success? The movie made less than a million dollars worldwide. Lebron can make a million dollars in five seconds for a company by doing a shoe commercial. Excellent job drinking the Kool Aid, though. But if you’re going to call “financial success” you’re either ridiculously uninformed or a liar. Oh, and “The Decision” was one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen in professional sports.

      • antistratfordian - Feb 28, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Smh. It doesn’t have to gross 100 million dollars to be a financial success. Some of the most profitable films of all time (percentage wise) have only grossed 500k to 1 million dollars.

How much do you think it cost to make? It was low-to-no budget, and made about a million just in the theaters – more on video sales. A film just has to make its money back to claim success. MTAG more than made its money back.

The Decision showed that when LeBron is on the screen, people watch – which you were claiming doesn’t happen (ridiculous!). 😉

I hear Bosh will be one of the aliens….

    • asimonetti88 - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:54 PM

      too easy

  4. savvybynature - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Good marketing, but something original might do more for his brand.
Maybe he could make a Dora the Explorer movie with Justin Bieber, Mylie Cyrus and Katie Perry or something?

    • elcapitanfiscal - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:12 PM

Give me Miley and Katie, you can keep Beiver.

  5. asimonetti88 - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:51 PM

Bupkus will take the talent of Andrew Bynum, and instead of turning into a Monstar he’ll end up missing the whole movie.

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:05 AM

Not a lot of comments make me laugh at loud, but I lost it after reading this. Brilliant.

  6. shuttaman1990 - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:53 PM

I wouldn’t mind if he had more than 2 rings, but he doesn’t
Michael had 4 rings when Space jam was released.
WHAT THE HELL HAS lebron done to get a movie? That is a slap to Michael Jordan’s face.

I’d rather have Kobe instead of Lebron who MAY NOT EVEN WIN A RING THIS YEAR!

    Lakers all day.

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:24 AM

So.. One reason you list for Lebron not doing it is he may not win a ring this year, and yet Kobe isn’t even playing and the Lakers aren’t even making the playoffs. Someone is biased 😉

      To answer your rebuttal…

Kobe has 2 things working against him. 1) Shaq was the main personality and player for his first 3 and 2) the Colorado b.s. will mean Kobe will never get an offer to do something like this.

People need to give up trying to compare any player to MJ. No player will go 6 for 6 in winning both the Finals and Finals MVP, but Lebron is as close as we’ve seen as far as dominance.

  7. seattlesuperchronic - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:01 PM

I’ll watch it when it hits Netflix or hbo. I’m a sucker for cartoon and real life mixins. I don’t fight, but if someone says they don’t like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it’s on!

    • eugenesaxe1 - Feb 22, 2014 at 2:20 AM

The difference being that Roger Rabbit was actually a good movie with good actors.

      • adamsjohn714 - Feb 22, 2014 at 11:46 PM

Idk, I felt some of the characters were a bit two dimensional.

      • eugenesaxe1 - Feb 23, 2014 at 3:41 AM

        Well played.

  8. chiadam - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:08 PM

Other than fleeing his own team for someone else’s so he could win a ring, has LeBron made one original move ever?

    • cantonbound13 - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:43 PM

      So true.

    • miamatt - Feb 21, 2014 at 10:14 PM

Every time he’s on the court, buddy. Every time he’s on the court.

      • leahcima1 - Feb 22, 2014 at 9:21 AM

Some people are so blinded be jealousy that they move into a fantasy world. Cantonjerk0 is enraged that his team lost out on Lebron so he strikes out at everything he can. But notice he NEVER misses an article, nary a word, that is written about King James. Cantonjerk, please never change, you are pure entertainment. lol

    • therooneyskilledwebster - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:04 PM

Much like Lebron is to Michael, the sequel rarely lives up to the success of the original.

    • 1972wasalongtimeago - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Totally false. He came to Miami to win MULTIPLE rings. Get your facts straight nro

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:06 AM

Yes. It’s called More Than A Game. A pretty good documentary actually.

  9. djshnooks - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:20 PM

This is terrible. Gonna ruin a classic.

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:16 AM

It has more to do with who directs and writes the movie instead of who stars. Most “A-list” actors have movies that failed.

  10. phillysports1 - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Evan Turner will be one of the aliens . Lol

  11. golfrangeman - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:47 PM

I’m pretty sure the owners own the teams not the players.

  12. babyfarkmcgeezax - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:51 PM

I wonder if the script will be as predictable as the ones the NBA wrote the last few years to make sure LeBron’s team won the championship.

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:07 AM

If you truly believe that then why are you worried about anything NBA related?

  13. revren10 - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Who plays the tall goofy white guy?

    • savvybynature - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:55 PM

      Guest appearance by Ilgauskas?

    • 1972wasalongtimeago - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:41 PM

      Larry’s not white. Larry’s clear.

      • asimonetti88 - Feb 22, 2014 at 2:04 AM

        Shawn Bradley

      • asimonetti88 - Feb 22, 2014 at 2:04 AM

and yes I know you’re quoting the movie

  14. siggtacular - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:28 PM

As a 90s kid, this is amazing

  15. siggtacular - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:28 PM

As a 90s kid, this is amazing

  16. pharohislife - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:32 PM

He’s just gonna try to join the Alien team halfway through.

  17. brianjoates - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:33 PM

    Damn, don’t like dwade?

It’s going to be interesting what they do in the off season. Riley has a plan mapped out, but is wade apart of it? You make LeBron happy and give him a shot to win rings each season. Like to see Vince Carter make his way as a role player for a shot at a coattail ring.

    • detectivejimmymcnulty - Feb 22, 2014 at 12:14 AM

Wade’s not going anywhere. He and Lebron are very close off the court.

      • belleby123 - Feb 22, 2014 at 8:48 AM

        Does Gabrielle know?

  18. sportsnut101 - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:58 PM

so lebron is gonna have bugs and daffy travel back to house to pick up lebron high school shorts where he played against avg talent

dont ruin this classic movie please this was a cool movie for the 90s

  19. belleby123 - Feb 22, 2014 at 8:52 AM

Hey, do you think when the Bulls surpass the Heat in the standings there will be some posts about them then?

  20. pimpythepooh - Feb 22, 2014 at 10:56 AM

After seeing the first one as a kid, all I remember thinking is why in the hell was Shawn Bradley in this and that the Monstars must have taken his basketball powers not in the movie but the day before Draft night.

  21. chris3141084 - Feb 22, 2014 at 1:10 PM

Someone leak to the media that they are going with Kevin Durante, I bet LeBron’s people will change their tune immediately.

  22. jtbsteeler - Feb 22, 2014 at 2:44 PM

    Bogus rumors again.

  23. knoxxlive - Feb 22, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Savvybynatute, who’s brand ? Lebron is already a global icon
