The NBA continues to look at better ways to punish flopping and get players to think twice — they are going to be more aggressive with technical foul calls for flops in the D-League starting Thursday — but for now the NBA will continue it’s slap-on-the-wrist fines.

The latest one goes to P.J. Tucker of the Phoenix Suns, the league announced Wednesday. Tucker has been $5,000 for a flop against the Denver Nuggets Tuesday.

You can see the play above. With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter Goran Dragic was driving from the left wing and was forced into a reverse layup, while Tucker was in a prime rebounding position in front. Kenneth Faried of Denver came up behind Tucker and tried to body him and get rebounding position, and after a relatively light tap Tucker launched forward into the stantion like he was hit by a linebacker. Tucker had been warned for flopping earlier this season by the league.

Tucker becomes the fifth NBA player fined for flopping this season, joining James Harden, Lance Stephenson, Mario Chalmers and Corey Brewer.

Amazing that Ginobli, LeBron and Chris Paul have not been fined for flopping seeing as they’re the troika of floppers.

They’ve all been warned at least once for flopping, but no fines for a big star yet.

That’s another reason why in-game penalties could potentially be better than post-game fines. The NBA has been reluctant to fine star players, so fans who want to see real punishment need to hope that in-game referees are more determined to punish this.

I’ve seen plenty of stars get called for technicals. I believe Durant was among the league leaders in technicals last year. So making flopping a reviewable technical foul could see stars punished more readily.

The day I take the anti-flopping rhetoric seriously is when one of those guys gets fined. Until then it’s all a bunch of hooey.
