Report: Knicks may be closer to dealing Iman Shumpert to Clippers, talking smaller trade with Nuggets

A report earlier on Wednesday had the Knicks engaged in trade talks with the Clippers that would send Iman Shumpert and Raymond Felton to Los Angeles in exchange for Darren Collison and Reggie Bullock.

Despite getting out from under Felton’s contract, which is essentially for two more seasons beyond this one considering his player option for 2016, this trade would be a disaster for the Knicks. Collison has been improved in an expanded role with Chris Paul out of the lineup, but is as bad on the defensive end of the floor as he’s been good offensively.

Collison is not an upgrade, and giving up Shumpert for him would be a mistake. At least in the most recent round of discussions, New York would get a player that can contribute now, though it’s unclear if that’s truly what would be best.

Barnes is better now than Bullock, but Felton’s contract at less than $4 million per year isn’t exactly an albatross that the Knicks should be trying to get rid of at all costs. Shumpert is still on his rookie deal, and though he’s been marginalized by the Knicks management and coaching staff since the summer, he’s got real potential and has shown the ability to produce on both ends of the floor.

A smaller move New York is considering might be better for the team, and far less damaging to its future.

The Knicks would trade Udrih for a bag of basketballs at this point, considering how dreadful he was in running the team during his 12 starts this season. Hamilton is a skilled offensive player, but he’ll be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Oh, and then came this, from TNT’s David Aldridge:

It’s clear the Knicks are trying to make some moves before Thursday’s deadline. It’s unclear, however, if any of them will end up being wise long-term decisions.

“giving up Shumpert for him would be a mistake”

yes indeed … i can’t stress this enough and i hope new york doesn’t make a knee jerk-trade deadline move

New York always makes knee-jerk moves.

Surprised James Dolan hasn’t blown out an ACL before.

I can’t watch this anymore!!! I grew up in NYC and to see the Knicks F up time after time drove me to root for my new local team (now that I’m in DC). The Wizards! That’s how far you’ve pushed me Mr. Dolan! You want to give up the best young player on your roster??? What is wrong with you guys??? Why don’t you sign Stoudamire another 10 years while you’re at it!

    • redbaronx - Feb 19, 2014 at 8:22 PM

Lest I forget, rehire Isaiah Thomas! At least he’ll make the roster so bad that you just might get a lottery pick! That is if you have any salary cap to sign your pick after Isaiah is done with you.

    Canton bounds team…

Shumpert for Blake griffin and a first rounder seems fair. Clips would be selling high on bg but the knicks are stupid enough to pull the trigger

Shumpert for Blake griffin sounds about right.

    • money2long - Feb 19, 2014 at 9:58 PM

only if they throw in the jetpack he uses in the gamefly commercial. that’ll make it fair.

Calm down Dolan, you shouldn’t be browsing PBT, you have a franchise to run [into the ground].

Say what you will about cantonbound, his loyalty is strong. A certain amount of credit should be applied for a dude that roots for a team that keeps on shooting itself in the foot.

    • cantonbound13 - Feb 19, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Thanks bro. No bandwagon jumping here.

      • jcmeyer10 - Feb 19, 2014 at 10:44 PM

I gotta give you props for that. I hope to have the same commitment if the Celts fall down the same rabbit hole.

Why are Knick fans so high on Shumpert??? 3rd year in the league & he’s a “good” not “great” defender who is incredibly inconsistent on offense & injury prone….matter of fact I think he left tonight’s game with a sprained knee. Tim Hardaway Jr. has straight up played his way into the rotation & it’s because of his play Shumpert has now become very expendable. Even J.R. Smith has played much better since dropping the antics. I’m sorry but I’m if the opinion that if Shump played for the Bucks…nobody would know his name. Collision is a young, solid PG who has played very well pretty much everywhere he’s been. The Knicks NEED a PG….they don’t need a 3rd SG who has more styles than PPG (7.2)….

Collison played well? He played horrible for Dallas and was benched in favor of Derek Fisher and Mike James?!

      • cruzan80 - Feb 20, 2014 at 7:13 AM

Yes, I said “pretty much everywhere”. He’s only 26 & to date his career has still been more productive than Shumpert’s. Dallas was obviously a bad fit….he did play well in New Orleans, Indiana & in L.A. Heck, CP3 was out for also most a month & nobody noticed. Guess who was starting in his place. I’m not calling Collisin the 2nd coming of Magic Johnson but he is better than Shumpert & he fills a need that the Knicks have……Shumpert doesn’t.

  8. dannymac17 - Feb 19, 2014 at 10:24 PM

I can’t believe this guy is serious trading Iman Shumpert for Blake Griffin.

  9. csbanter - Feb 19, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Hardaway Jr makes Shumpert expendable. Only a fool GM would take Felton.

  10. provguard - Feb 20, 2014 at 1:25 AM

Let the Knicks keep Shumpert… This guy is the most inconsistent player in the NBA. Twice a week he is a player and the rest of the week he is an idler… Doc, this is a ignorant move….

  11. campcouch - Feb 20, 2014 at 2:48 AM

I’m thinking this is a NY media driven trade…but, don’t underestimate the Clippers. Despite their recent winning ways, they are the Clips!
