Lakers trade Steve Blake to Warriors

With the Lakers season having spun so far out of control that all has essentially become lost in Los Angeles, there’s no reason for them to hold onto anything remotely resembling an asset that the team isn’t committed to keeping beyond this season.

Steve Blake (when healthy) has been more than serviceable at the guard spot, and with the Warriors looking to get a third ball-handler to play alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson as Jarret Jack did for them a season ago, a deal between the two clubs seems to make sense from both sides.

Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times first reported that Blake was gone, and Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports followed up with the particulars.

The deal for the Lakers is purely financial.

Bazemore will be a restricted free agent next season if L.A. chooses to extend him the qualifying offer of $1.1 million this summer, while Brooks is unrestricted, and only on the books for $1.2 million this season.

The Lakers aren’t a team that has ever made deals that were strictly concerned with saving money, but the way this season has unfolded, along with the more punitive luxury tax system in place under the new collective bargaining agreement makes getting under the tax threshold a priority.

A couple of other small deals (like one involving Jordan Hill) could potentially get the Lakers under the luxury tax line this season, which would allow them to avoid repeater tax penalties in future years — at which time they’ll have the cap space to go after star-level talent in rebuilding the team into a championship contender.
