Bulls’ GM “disappointed” Carlos Boozer went public with being unhappy

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau doesn’t play Carlos Boozer much in the fourth quarter of games because… well, Thibodeau likes defense. The combination of Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson plays better at that end of the floor late in games. Boozer only is in when he has a clear interior matchup advantage.

Boozer doesn’t like that, he wants to play more, and he said so in a professional way recently.

Still, Bulls general manager Gar Forman wished Boozer wouldn’t have aired the team’s dirty laundry in public, he said at an event as reported by CSNChicago.com.

“I’m disappointed that Carlos didn’t keep that in-house,” Forman said. “I think we’ve seen Tom does a terrific job managing guys’ roles, managing their minutes. In that situation, Taj has played very, very well.”

I can understand why Gar is frustrated, but Boozer has handled his frustrations with his role professionally, in my opinion.

Announcement: Pro Basketball Talk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $60,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Tuesday night’s games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $8,500. Starts at 7:30pm ET on Tuesday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

It is expected that the Bulls will finally use their amnesty provision on Boozer this summer, freeing up money to go after a free agent (whether that is Carmelo Anthony or someone else remains to be seen).

If/when that happens it will be interesting to see what the market is for Boozer — he can certainly still get you points and boards inside (14.7 and 8.5 a game this season), he’s solid and professional, but he’s not as efficient as he once was and at this point he is a quality role player. Not a guy worth the $16.8 million he is owed next season (although if he is amnestied he still gets that money, the Bulls just have him come off the official books). Boozer is going to be a guy much closer to the league average deal when he goes for his next contract.

Congrats, you just made “I reblogged this to my crappy blog” posts seem actually worthwhile.

Carlos Boozer unhappy Bulls’ GM went public with being disappointed with Carlos Boozer going public with being unhappy

    • fanofthegame79 - Feb 4, 2014 at 1:11 PM

I’m so glad you posted this! How hypocritical was it for the Bulls’ GM to go public just to say he was mad Boozer went public?!?!?

    • masher1965 - Feb 4, 2014 at 5:44 PM

      Picky , picky , picky !!! LOL

  3. gugurich - Feb 4, 2014 at 12:03 PM

At least Boozer got his wish. He got a lot of fourth quarter time, checking in earlier than usual at the 9:36 of the 4th with his team down 18 and then checking out at the 2:44 mark with his team down 25. Thibs obliges and aims to please.

    • scott42444 - Feb 4, 2014 at 2:41 PM

Noah getting tossed probably had something to do with it (both the playing time and point differential).

  4. urodaddy07 - Feb 4, 2014 at 12:05 PM

Maybe Booz should start playing some defence.

    • sixchicagobulls - Feb 4, 2014 at 1:23 PM

Boozer can be mad or whatever his lack of any defensive effort is not bad but horrible.
His fouls are nothing but pushing people in the back play in the 4th quarter man please I dont want to see him play in quarters 1-3.

Gotta love the NBA. Bunch of bums making on avg what the top of the league guys in the NFL make. Ridiculous.

    • asimonetti88 - Feb 4, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Each NFL team has 50+ roster spots, each NBA team has 15. Of course NBA players are going to make more.

      • 00maltliquor - Feb 4, 2014 at 2:04 PM

        Exactly

      • casualcommenter - Feb 4, 2014 at 11:50 PM

Yes. I honestly don’t understand why some fans don’t get the difference.

An NBA player plays 82 games in regular season, an NFL player plays 16 games.
Both leagues have playoffs lasting 4 rounds, but for the NBA, they’re best of 7 game series between 2 teams, while the NFL only has 1 game between teams in each round.

NBA players play a lot of games. In addition, each team only has 15 guys, and players are expected to play on both offense and defense. In the NFL, guys only play on offense or defense, and there are 53 guys.

        Not complicated.

      • casualcommenter - Feb 4, 2014 at 11:51 PM

And yeah – the rule applies for baseball as well.

Smaller roster + more games + guys playing both offense and defense = larger salaries

  6. spursareold - Feb 4, 2014 at 12:31 PM

I’m wondering if Gar wants guys who are OK, or even elated with the prospect of being off the floor in the 4th?

  7. sportsnut101 - Feb 4, 2014 at 12:43 PM

I’m unhappy bulls management has been awful
Boozer gonna get cut in offseason so why not just pay him to stay home now

  8. zeedoubleyou - Feb 4, 2014 at 1:10 PM

Any chance Carlos changes his first name to Amnesty?

  9. braven4evr - Feb 4, 2014 at 1:41 PM

It’s fine for Chicago to publicly shop Boozer, but bad for him to publicly speak of his disappointment…smh

    • scott42444 - Feb 4, 2014 at 3:39 PM

They haven’t been “publicly” shopping Boozer. I have not seen an official statement from Gar or Pax and I have never seen a direct quote about it. The fact is, Boozer was signed because he provided scoring from the post, which is hard to find in the NBA (especially in the era of stretch 4’s and no longer having centers start in the All-Star Game). Even with his diminished athleticism and skill, he has been one of the only sources of points from the post during his tenure. I say this because I appreciate what he is more than manyBulls fans, especially since the Bulls rack near the bottom of the NBA in offense. But he shouldn’t call out Thibs when he is basically an untradeable player due to his cost/production. That being said, he will be an great asset after this season. If the Bulls can’t (or won’t) go all-in on the impending free agent class of 2014, he will be a great expiring contract they could hang onto. Boozer should be happy because at 33, he will get to basically choose any team he wants and salary is not a factor.

It’s no secrete the the Bulls and Knicks wanted Chris Bosh, but when he signed with Miami they had to settle for Boozer and Amare. I think the bulls have a shot at Kevin Love.

    • masher1965 - Feb 4, 2014 at 5:46 PM

And this has to do with the article …… ???

  11. suckit619 - Feb 4, 2014 at 3:11 PM

I agree, Boozer shouldn’t have said anything. I guess he knows he’ll be on his way out the door after the team amnesties him in the offseason. Also, shut up Gar. You’re a horrible GM…

  12. drago2012 - Feb 4, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Boozer wants to play more, because it is not about the Bulls any more , it is about Carlos Boozer and his next contract somewhere else. By sitting him down in the fourth quarter it will cost him a coupe of million on the next contract. His next contract will be closer to 5 million.

    Garman? Moron.
