NBA postpones Pistons at Hawks due to snowstorm that shut down Atlanta

Jan 29, 2014, 11:11 AM EDT

Atlanta snow

Atlanta is not a city braced for major snowstorms and it got hit by a big one — it had paralyzed the city (and much of the south) and left a couple school children stranded in a bus overnight, trapped in and unable to move during the snowfall.

In the wake of all that the NBA has wisely postponed the Pistons vs. Hawks game scheduled for Atlanta on Wednesday night.

The game will be rescheduled for a later date yet to be determined.

Icy and snowy conditions left the streets in Atlanta virtually impassable and while the players may have gotten to the arena it would have been potentially dangerous for fans.

The Hawks are 23-21 on the season and have been a surprising .500 teams since the loss of Al Horford for the season due to a torn pectoral muscle. The Pistons are 18-27, in a battle with Charlotte, New York and Cleveland for the final playoff spot in the East.

LoL what did 2 inches freak them out?

  2. longtallsam - Jan 29, 2014 at 11:49 AM

You idiots that think you know so much, because you can drive on that dry, powdery snow you have up north, just come on down south the next time we have an ice storm and show us how good you are. There is a hellava difference in driving on your snow and the stuff we usually have. I know, I have driven in both. And even if we had a bunch of your snowblowers, they wouldn’t work in this stuff.

I beg to differ, I understand ice but Im located in Buffalo Ny… the weather is 0 today with a windchill of -20!!! You cant sit here and tell me that we couldnt drive you 2inches of icey snow bc we do on a daily basis. Sorry but you people down South just need to prepare youself better, like really 2-3 inches of snow shuts down the city of ATL lol!!! Thats good stuff, come up here for a week and will see if you wanna take your comment back now.

Wagons – if you think the people in Atlanta are bad for being in 2-3 inches of snow and having a hard time, come to Arizona when it rains. And it doesn’t have to rain a lot. Any bit of rain on the roads out here stops everything up. So sad….

Im from Jersey, Ive lived in AZ, visit ATL often and been through Buff on my way to Canada so admittedly I dont know too much about it. Im choosing in the following order…ATL, AZ, and anywhere besides Buffalo! No way I could deal with what yall do up there. However to their credit, theyre really not used to the snow and ice down south so it causes a lot of havoc whenever they do get it.

I wish we had that kind of “Snow Storm” here in Chicago.

    • weaselpuppy - Jan 29, 2014 at 8:16 PM

We’re all sorry that 3 inches of snow gives everyone in the south a urinary tract infection….

We get ice storms 4x a year, ones that entomb lighthouses and crash power lines for 100s of miles…. 80 inches of snow so far this year and an inland sea that creates it’s own 4-8inches of snow a day even when there isn’t a storm for 500 miles in any direction.

Maybe the National Guard should be delivering cases of Vagisil and cranberry juice. Softies.

They stranded school children in a bus overnight because of 2 1/2 inches of snow?!? Canceling a game now for tonight?

  4. chichi78 - Jan 29, 2014 at 12:11 PM

Let’s face the facts, the north has significantly worse ice, snow, sleet, etc. That said, the north is so used to this kind of weather, we keep warehouses full of salt to handle icy conditions.

The south really never has to worry about budgeting salt because it doesn’t get nearly as bad of weather. That is why an inch of snow can shut down the south (literally, I have family down there, and they complain about this).

I admit the fluffy snow is easy but here in the NE I’d say we get ice and all a lot more than that powdery snow. And because it’s cold, even the melting powdery snow eventually becomes ice.

Well I’m stranded at a hotel 90 miles from home. So condescending northerners can laugh all you want, but this storm is serious.

  7. davidly - Jan 29, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Fellers, fellers, now, settle down. Mistakes were made on both sides.

  8. frank433 - Jan 29, 2014 at 1:50 PM

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!

  9. eagles512 - Jan 29, 2014 at 1:59 PM

My guess is the lack of salt, not plows is the problem.

  10. strictlythedanks - Jan 29, 2014 at 2:32 PM

Meanwhile northerners unleash a collective chuckle

  11. slaugin - Jan 29, 2014 at 2:33 PM

LOL at the north only having fluffy snow. Every storm is completely different condition from the next. Once a year we get a crazy ice storm that takes out power everywhere, but yet we drive

  12. mnwildfan15 - Jan 29, 2014 at 3:54 PM

Please tell my back about all this light fluffy snow we get up here.

  13. timmons94 - Jan 29, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Now 455 people have to make other plans for tonight. I was there for last ice storm. Kids were out all week of school. Thrashers left and still no one goes to hawks games. Should be next to move out of the Atl. Thrashers. Braves. Hawks soon

  14. belleby123 - Jan 30, 2014 at 7:17 AM

If they had the weather we’ve had in the Midwest they’d shut down the whole season.

    • philtration - Jan 30, 2014 at 8:22 AM

They tell you that on FOX News?

      • belleby123 - Jan 31, 2014 at 9:12 AM

        No, I don’t speak moron.

  15. mannyicey - Jan 30, 2014 at 7:42 AM

People who live in Atlanta are from EVERYWHERE, not just the South. I’m from St. Louis. I went to school in Chicago. I am well-versed in driving in snowy and icy weather.

But there’s a difference in having snow in the North vs. the South. First of all, it rarely snows down here, so people don’t sell or buy snow chains, salt or anything like that. It’s not at Walmart and you can find it readily available at the hardware store. Plus, we don’t have the snow plows for the streets that goes around pre-treating the roads before it snows. So when it does snow, it’s hazardous for everyone because you simply cannot drive up the ice.

Oh, and another thing- have you ever notice how smooth the roads are in places like Atlanta? It’s because they don’t suffer the same wear-and-tear of salting and sanding. So this happens every 5 years or so.
